Ripped from the national news headlines, this could have been a simple, straightforward narrative of a heinous hate crime against a teenager who rejected binary notions of male and female. Sasha identified as agender, went by the pronoun “they,” and was set on fire for having the naivete (or audacity) to look like a boy yet wear a skirt while riding a city bus through the streets of Oakland, California. But instead of falling into tired old true-crime tropes, award-winning journalist Dashka Slater has constructed a deeper narrative that questions binary notions not only of gender, but of other culturally resonant binaries as well – of victim and perpetrator, black and white, good and evil.Slater spent three years researching this story. She pored over records. She got to know dozens of people who opened up and trusted her with their perspectives. Aiding her mission was the raw beauty of her central characters. Sasha’s parents are models of compassion, empathy and open-mindedness. Richard, the teenager who set fire to Sasha’s skirt, is an otherwise sweet and well-meaning boy who grew up under conditions of extreme adversity. His mother, just 14 when Richard was born, is a loving and caring woman who reaches out to Sasha’s family, tearfully hugging them and apologizing in the courtroom hallway.Rather than choosing sides in this urban tragedy, Slater shows a deft ability to explore and give equal weight to disparate realities. Through her own disciplined modeling of empathetic balance, Slater masterfully challenges our notions of moral right and wrong. As we ride along with her on The 57 Bus, we ultimately have no choice but to acknowledge the enormous power of the social environment in shaping perspectives and behaviors that at first glance might appear freely chosen. If there are bad guys in this narrative, they are the larger forces within these social structures: Prosecutors who - locked into a rigid system of winners and losers - blithely try juveniles in adult courts even when the victim’s family and groups like the Transgender Law Center object. Hate crime laws that are enforced in a racially biased manner. Social media trolls who rev up inter-group animosities. Hack defense attorneys who blunder along with little regard for their clients’ human sensibilities. One might not anticipate that a story about a gender-nonconforming teenager being set on fire would be uplifting. But by the time we shut the cover of The 57 Bus, we feel not just sadness but also a cautious optimism borne of witnessing the powerful human connections that literally sprang from the ashes of tragedy.

I really love this book. I love that it is about 2 kids from the same city but not the same place. They are both outsiders in different ways. They both have families that love them and they are not always making easy choices for themselves. I fell in love with everyone. You'd think I was 16 too instead of 66 (yeah, true). I was not aware that California cleaned up their juvenile justice system but I am happy they have. I'd be privileged to know either of them. Fair disclosure here: I also have Asperger's syndrome. I also love social justice information, which is why I read the book in the first place.I, so very much, hope the best to both of these families. And I hope we keep moving the legal system to a new place. I hope this writer keeps writing.

I read this for a book club. The statistics that were scattered through it were really shocking. I keep typing, deleting, retyping to try to explain what I got out of this book. It's hard to explain, but one way it changed me was - when used to I hear about a youth committing a crime, particularly one who has no history of this type of behavior, I used to think that maybe they just never got caught before. But now I think I have more initial compassion for the youth and their family and wonder if there is more to the story that we just don't know. It was also interesting to see a description of how restorative justice can work in a school. I had heard the term but never really knew how it would work, or if it could work.

A rare and heart wrenching view inside the lives of two completely different young human beings. Daska’s writing is honest, authentic and above all important. There are valuable lessons and conversation that this true story can impart to anyone and everyone who holds this book in their hands.

I want to preface this with I have nothing against the LGBTQ community. I didn’t however know until I started reading this that this is mostly about that & the particular way the person who the book is written about likes to be addressed. It’s poorly written & a lot of the “chapters” are one & two pages long with a lot of wasted space. It’s distracting. The story is terrible & tragic for all parties involved, I just feel it could’ve been written better.

Wow. This book was SO good. It touched on the lives of two different people and how one incident brought them together. It shed light on the trans community and helped people that are not familiar with a lot of the terminology to understand the different identifications of the LGBTQX Community. I loved this book from start to finish. I love the way that it was written and the fact that it was based on a true story. I cried. I laughed. I really really really encourage anyone to read it to stop reading reviews and just buy it.

Easily the best YA book I've read in years. This amazing nonfiction book reads like a novel without being overly dramatic or assuming what the people involved were thinking or feeling. This has left me much to think about and I know I'll be returning to it again as well as recommending it to others!

I enjoyed the book because I felt I learned who the people are in this book by the way the author wrote about them. I googled the incident a few times while I was reading to learn even more and to see pictures of Sasha and whomever else there are pictures of. The forgiveness was impressive and made my heart happy.
