Review

“[A] timely volume of essays on an important topic—the contributors are doing groundbreaking folkloric work. By illuminating a contemporary phenomenon, these essays make us rethink our understandings of folkloric processes throughout history. The volume is perhaps one of the first dedicated to the Slender Man phenomenon (certainly the first by folklorists). . . . [T]he authors make significant contributions to theories of ostension, play, questions of real/fake, semiotics, community and individual creation, digital communication, cosplay, and transmedia studies.”—Michael Dylan Foster, University of California, Davis

It was a well thought out book that reflected how a air war at least in the beginning can be won on a shoestring. Not only was he a good leader, he was also an innovator developing skip bombing, B-25 strafers, and keeping air losses relatively low through good tactics. He was one of the few who work for and understand MacArthur. He was a no BS general. When the supply system wasn't working as it should, he streamlined, set up aircraft depots, and even arranged air crew training in theatre. In essence he knew tactics, strategy, logistics, and could usually get his bosses support for his ideas. Bosses in his case included MacArthur, Hap Arnold, and FDR.He also understood his tactical leaders and developed them in theatre. When they were burning out he sent them on leave to Australia or back to the US. Many of these men returned back from the US and did good work. Most got promoted. His men were loyal and reliable. The best improved their units by leading their aircraft into battle. Many of his best leaders died in the front leading their squadrons. Also mentioned were airmobile ops using rapidly moving Aussie troops with C47s. He understood ground tactics better than ground general understood the air war.The history, aircraft discussion, tactics are complete. It is a good book.

Given the times and the manner the book was written, from Kenny’s notes, it gives an interesting view of this combat area. In particular, the attacks on Japanese shipping. Some of the comments regarding the performance and reliability of Allied aircraft shed new light for me on prior historical works. That said, much of the language I found racist, in today’s context, though more or less expected during the war. The book contains stereotyping of Japanese pilots that is inaccurate and noted by later works by other authors.Kenny’s reporting of Japanese aircraft losses, if true, would seem to have eliminated the entire Japanese air capability in the early years. Typically, pilot reports are inaccurate in the heat of and immeadiately following a battle. This book does not seem to have been corrected by postwar enemy records, and that is fine, as long as the reader is aware.Lastly, the unbridled praise for General McArthur is overdone in light of history. No doubt a brilliant leader but in Kenny’s eyes have very few flaws. The book is interesting and well worth my time.

Kenney was there and he tells it as he saw it! The Fifth Air Force's campaign through New Guinea and the Philippines is an epic and Kenney tells the story with a lot of pride in the people who pulled it off. He doesn't go much into the politics surrounding MacArthur and the South Western Pacific Campaign which have been covered extensively elsewhere. Kenney writes with a tremendous amount of affection for his brave flyers, many of whom did not make it through the war. I read this book after reading an account by Robert Eichelberger, one of MacArthur's ground commanders and it was interesting to compare the accounts. The two things I would have liked which could easily have been inserted (read it on kindle) would have been maps and some commentary to go back to the post war records and correct the Japanese loss numbers in the battles which appear to be overstated (as they often were). This is a well written and fast moving account of an important but obscure part of the Pacific War and is well worth the read, but keep a map of New Guinea and the Philippines handy!

Kenney's account of the air war in SW Pacific is essential reading for any student of the war, period. Unfortunately, the second half gets a little rushed. In the first part of the book, there are plenty of stories about Kenney and his "kids" (youngish but highly trained, and after a while very combat experienced, pilots). Later in the book, there are still some great stories, but fewer, and the historical narrative lapses into a dry "the next day I flew into Clark Field" kind of recitation of facts. Some of it seems a bit self-serving in light of history, but that's true of any memoir whether you notice it or not. The photos and maps are at the end, making it hard to flip back and forth in the Kindle format. The only photos are of Kenney, sometimes with MacArthur, but it would have been nice to include photos of other characters such as Bong and places such as bases and targets. You can get pictures like that online now, but it still would have been nice. One thing that's hard to get online is maps with the place names Kenney uses, since so many names have changed and some that haven't are now spelled differently enough to make them hard to find with an online search. This book includes some very useful maps of the Papua campaign, but it would have been nice to see maps of the Western New Guinea, Hollandia, and Morotai Campaigns, with long-range targets in Borneo and other places identified. However, these are minor complaints compared to the value of hearing this history from Kenney himself. I recommend it if you are a war buff, even a moderate one, but I do not recommend it if you've only read a few books on the war. You'll get bored unless you're already interested enough to plow ahead through the dry passages and knowledgeable enough to connect the dots that Kenney takes for granted.

This book is a detailed account of US Army Air Force operations in the Southwest Pacific area of operations. It starts in the darkest days of WW2 when the Japanese have pushed the Allied forces all the way to Australia. General Kenney provides a very detailed story of how the Air Force responded and pushed through New Guinea on the way to Okinawa and Japan.I especially liked it as he provides background on not just the pilots and the aircrews and equipment but talks about logistics, supply, maintenance challenges and all the many mundane aspects of carrying out such a complex campaign.Along the way he also provides a lot of insight into GA MacArthur and other key personalities in the theater.Adds interesting commentary to the better known story of the Naval air war run by ADM Nimitz.
