Jeremy delivers a true lesson in this book and after you are done reading it you can't help but love thy neighbor... and drop the hate speech we have became so accustomed to see on our social media daily chats.

Sticks and stones ... name-calling and humor can't hurt you unless you let it. If you are humorless and like to take offense you will love this book. Or if you think the ability to speak out should be limited only to those who think like you.

This book is about 98% drivel. It is written in a very typical humanities style - his ideas and the logic/evidence behind them are so weak and vague that he tries to obscure the problem by rambling for pages on end. Everything he writes in the book could be stated in about one paragraph:We should have hate speech law to protect the social standing of minorities. On the other hand, some argue that we should allow hate speech in order to add legitimacy to anti-discrimination laws, so that they can be fully debated, or that the concept of personal autonomy is damaged by not allowing one to fully express oneself. That's basically it, so no need to waste your money on the entire book.

Groups of people act politically.Criticism of the political actions and speech of these groups is often labeled as "hate speech".Thus, hate speech regulation prevents political speech; and specifically that which is in opposition to the political speech of others.Essentially, it provides for a legal umbrella by which groups of people can seek unopposed political gains, often at the political, legal, democratic, and resource expense of other groups. Thus, by its nature, "hate speech" regulation is antithetical to liberalism as it protects the political gains of some groups at the expense of other groups. There is no legitimate rationale, observed or theoretical, for the conclusion that such protection will stay within the realm of equal rights. Today, we observe even agitation for hate speech regulation, as this book represents, being used to advance the political interests of groups well beyond any objectively morally just campaign for equal rights. This underlying reality of political competition is the foundation for the unquestionable nature of the first amendment that this book is attempting to undermine. Last: just because some so-called liberal democracies ban speech, this does not serve as a mandate to mimic their democratic corruption.

The author makes an argument against the broad traditional American view of Speech rights. He wants to create a legal and constititional window for the censoring and suppression of certain speech which he groups under the catch-all title of "hate speech". He invents a "group" right: the right to "dignity" which he then balances off against the right to speech in the system he describes. He tries to define his proposals as a positive (withdrawing a protection) rather than negative (banning something) but I really wonder if that sort of difference means anything at all?Waldron is good at showing the reality of speech today. Of showing the limits under the current American system of law that already exist and how the preceptions of many don't quite line up with the reality of the system. While the arguments in that respect are well made and potentially educational, I don't think that they help his case much. The limits of free speech under the current system do not themselves say anything about the wisdom of new limits on speech. What concerns me about the book is that he is hiding a broad set of concepts and changes to what speech rights means behind a "straw man" called hate speech. His straw man gives him easy examples which are difficult to argue against and at the same time allows him to avoid nearly all the broad consequences of his proposals. The idea of dignity he presents both goes beyond just the issue of "hate speech" and raises difficult questions as a general principle. The book edges toward the logical consequences of applying "dignity" to images of women. Various advertising images and most especially pornography could well be argued as acting against the right to "dignity" of women. Waldron isn't really very effective in terms of drawing the lines of where "dignity" ends. Political speech, by its very nature, often leads to speech that impacts the dignity of one group or another. What is to be done when two groups (lets say Palestinians and Israelis) attack each others dignity as part of their politics? People on both sides of the gun issue assault each others dignity all the time. Was the campaign against the Koch brothers in recent years an attack on their dignity? The problem with "hate speech" is that while its easy to find examples that it would be good to suppress, coming up with a legal framework that touches only those easy examples and nothing else is not so simple. Waldron's "dignity" approach didn't do it as far as I'm concerned. If it is applied as a principle, its reach is far too broad. If it is applied in the exception, it becomes a very arbitrary sort of law which will be selectively enforced based on politics.Where are the limits of "dignity"?Arbitrary enforcement has often been the problem with these laws in France. If the hate speech laws were uniformly applied, the outcome would have been many results which would be considered unacceptable. But in practice, the French courts have simply nullified the law's effects when it would produce an unacceptable result in terms of constraining speech. What is hate speech in France very much depends on who is making the speech and what the political majority thinks of them. Thus an unpopular minority comedian can be banned from performing. But a person considered a serious novelist or the producers of a film or the publishers of a popular satirical magazine will not be found guilty. The French courts have also said that while attacking an entire group (Muslims) is unacceptable hate speech, qualified attacks on minorities within the muslim community is acceptable speech. Therefore while words said against "muslims" are hate, to say the same words against "fundementalist muslims" or "terrorist muslims" are not hate. The great problem in France is that while those who favor these laws talk about protecting groups, what is empowered by these laws is the political majority. What the majority does with the laws is favor or punish speech according to their views and prejudices. The actual views and social status of the protected groups is incidental to the entire process.Another matter I would note is the ugly modern history of the British Libel laws. In my opinion, exceptions created to open speech inevitably don't work to the good. They are as often as not a means by which the powerful can crush the weak through the law.I personally think that hate speech should be dealt with through the concepts of individual harm and individual damage. I don't think that inventing metaphysical "group" rights into the law as regards speech is a workable idea. Damages have to be measurable and cannot be abstracted. In particular, nobody in an open society has a right to be protected from having their feelings hurt.Waldon tries somewhat to deal the hurt feelings issue by trying to wrap his ideas in an idea of social standing. That its ok to hurt feelings, but not social standing. But rather than a solid principle, that only seems to lead to arbitrary enforcement based on whatever groups the majority in society deems worthy of protection. In the end, I am left less than convinced of any justification for these changes to the law. The harm done by trying to regulate hate speech seems as if it will be far worse than the status quo. I also find it difficult to credit the idea that European countries are more advanced in their thinking on these subjects. I've mentioned before the atrocity of the British Libel laws. France is just as bad in that the system seems completely arbitrary if not outright political in restricting speech. In Germany, a comedian is arrested for mocking the President of Turkey. And even more recently Facebook, Twitter, Google and Microsoft have agreed to speech restrictions in Europe. The new innovation is that the actual censorship is to be outsourced to a large degree to non-governmental organizations. The organizations will be considered "trusted reporters" of what speech is to be banned. This will in essence allow the companies to create a process where speech can be censored by third parties with no real possibility of appeal even to the companies themselves. The censored will lack the knowledge of who is responsible for the censorship decisions.Worse yet, the "code of conduct" suggests a role for both the companies and the governments to identify and promote "counter narratives" through their services. Propaganda always being the sibling of censorship. Closer ties to law enforcement is of course also in the agreement.

Absolutely ridiculous book and premise.

As I expected, it is nonsense.

I weep for the future. The future that is the Orwellian nightmare of children in universities needing "safe" spaces because someone chalked Trump on the sidewalk of Emery University. When police and DA's get to ad on years to a sentence because someone yelled and ethnic slur while kicking the .... out of you. As if the physical pain is somehow worse ( don't bother the so called psychological pain is in your head). When scum like bobby kkkenedy wants to charge you under the RICO act because you don't agree with his views on global warming. Big brother is winning and this book is just another brick in the wall

#13,803 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Read the latest in The Bregdan Chronicles in two days. I felt it was almost more gripping than the books during the war, because of the constant fear and expectation that something bad was about to happen; I was as worried as the characters! I had not read that much about Reconstruction, but Ginny definitely did her research for this one. I had no idea about the Memphis riots. And even though I was born in Louisiana and am well aware of the ugly history there (and to be honest, the continued racism and disparity due to race), I had not heard the story of the convention either (assuming that it was based on true events). It was horrific to read those parts. As for the rest of the book, I was glad to see some movement with the characters, like Carrie finally attending school, and Rose and Moses making more plans of their own. I would have liked to see more of Carrie's actual experiences in classes and with other students than her housemates, and less handwringing and sidebar revelations with Janie and Abby; those can get tiresome and repetitive. Perhaps in the next book we'll see more behind the scenes of the medical school. I felt the two new romances were a little rushed - but then again, it's a novel. :) One of them I had seen coming a few books back (no spoilers!) so I was happy about it, even if it felt a little tacked on to the end. I look forward to seeing what happens next for Rose and Moses and others on the plantation, and I have a feeling some of the other black characters will have some big changes as the books progress. In terms of the editing, I'm so glad Ginny is working with a new editor - I only spotted a handful of minor errors this time, and the formatting was clean and easy to read on the Kindle. It was a long book, but I didn't feel like it was dragging at all. Keep it up, Ginny!

I'm so excited Glimmers of Change (Book 7) is finally released! These characters have become like family and I feel like I've been out of touch with my "family" while waiting on this release. Ginny is a wonderful writer and brings each character to life. When one character is affected, I feel as though my own family is suffering along. Sometimes when I'm talking with friends, I begin to share the trauma or crisis and then realize, "Oh, that's not my real family!" We have a chuckle and move on. I downloaded Glimmers of Change just after it's release last night. I'm on Chapter 4 now. I'm contemplated "pretending to be sick" so I can curl up and put all my daily responsibilities aside and read the entire book - hopefully without distractions. Thanks Ginny! You are a prized writer and are much appreciated!

The word glimmer can be defined as a flicker, a flash, or even a twinkle. I like the glow of a twinkle! At first it was difficult for me to understand what a “glimmer of change” can be? After finishing the book I then understood its more about the “how” changes take place. "Change” can quickly and dynamically alter one’s path in life as events unfold. Being hopeful for a new life—growing stronger and confident—following one’s dreams can all be subtle insights or glimmers we are gifted with as we grow through the struggles or complications or just daily interactions of our lives. Each of the books in this series has inspired me with great joy and wisdom in navigating the events of my life. The reconstruction years following the Civil War changed how people lived. These years were not even on my radar as far as imagining how events took place following so much loss of life, the rebuilding of the economy, and unfortunately experiencing racism and inequalities. I also was inspired by the shared passion and unity of stakeholders in fighting for equality. What I learned about myself is that I am not passionate enough to support issues existing in my world today! (I saw a glimmer for change). The ensemble cast of characters demonstrated much growth in this year. Children were born, new love interests were uncovered, and the cruelty of racism and hatred made me almost physically sick. The descriptive artistry of the author’s passages placed me curbside—watching the unnecessary slaughtering of life in Memphis and New Orleans. I fact-checked these events and I am so pleased to report that the author not only captured factual details of these riots but she connected me to that time period as the characters I have grown to love were integrated into these events.I never imagined reading seven books in so little time. I never expected to receive this much joy from reading and yet I am so happy I am learning about this time in history, learning about myself, and being inspired to be more passionate about current issues in my life. I am tremendously thankful to the incredible friend who got me hooked onto this treasure!! Thanks to the author for yet another great story! I just started book 8 and I am now learning about the integration of ………..I’ll wait to report on what I am learning when I finish this book.

This has to be the best book in the Bregdan series. I learned so much about what happened in this country in 1866. I appreciate the time and effort the author spent in studying the overall political situation in the southern states and President Johnson's refusal to intervene. The riots initiated by the police against the blacks in Memphis and New Orleans were horrifying. Yet I never felt like I was reading a history book due to the personal involvement of all the dear people that I have come to love throughout this series of books. Can't wait for the next one, Ginny Dye.

#57,667 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I have bought the first book ok of this author then 2 and now this. Good to know what you already have in your to use your tongue! I have seen this does help me!

This book is a “ must have “ reference book for all serious followers of Jesus who are being used by the Lord in HIS healing ministries... profoundly helpful ...and ...I just ordered another copy for my daughter, Lacey Holcomb, who is a Christian counselor in Austin, Texas. Highly recommend this book for your personal collection of great Christian reference books !!! It is filled with Biblical scripture to back up the healing prayers...it will assist in getting powerful results with accuratewording ( praying along biblical lines) of prayers ... great as a “ role modeling “ tool for powerful healing prayers for those of us anxious to be used by GOD in HIS healing ministry. I usually loan out my great reference books, but this one is so profoundly helpful, I am just buying more copies for others and saving this one to actively use at home for myself.

This is exactly what God is asking of his church and His kids right now! We know what to do but we don't do it! We allow doubt and unbelief and the world to define us instead of God and His Word. I wish there was a little bit more of how awesome God's grace is towards us. Yet, the thing I love about this book is the way the author doesn't compromise and states the truth very direct and powerfully. It's time we wake up and understand who we are in Christ!

Like others, I first was introduced to the book with the author on the Sid Roth Program. After reading several places of interest, it was becoming more clear that maybe I would have been better off getting a more recent book by her. As far the content, I knew much of what she spoke of and was disappointed in the low number of actual cases of deliverance and healing. Her "formula" for one case could be given in one basic statement made rather than almost a who page of points to follow. It seemed like more of a work-book format and I was looking more for the "facts". When I wanted to return it, I was disappointed in needing the approval of the sender, which if no answer from them in two days, I had a problem. Well! It's been several days now and this alone has belittled the book in a way I never even could.rh

Our words are SO powerful. This is an easy to understand, thorough discussion of this complex subject. It deals with many aspects of how our words work in our lives...how we can stop harming ourselves and others with the wrong words, and how we can use our declarations to be a healing force in our own lives and the lives of others. Becky is a gifted healer and her book is filled with wisdom. I strongly recommend it!!

enjoyed it

Great read.

I first saw this author on Sid Roth and ordered a package with 📖 and 💿 series. She explains in a way that is interesting and Scripturally sound so I wanted to learn more from a woman of God who is confident in her Christian walk. This book is A-mazing! Wish I’d known the significance of my speech/words decades ago. My marriage and relationships with health/$/people are positively improving as a result of studying this author’s work! Her work with orphaned children and how little sick ones have overcome is inspiring. Everyone would benefit from this book to understand how to speak into their lives.

To Have and Have Not, by Ernest Hemingway

Amazon.com Review

First things first: readers coming to To Have and Have Not after seeing the Bogart/Bacall film should be forewarned that about the only thing the two have in common is the title. The movie concerns a brave fishing-boat captain in World War II-era Martinique who aids the French Resistance, battles the Nazis, and gets the girl in the end. The novel concerns a broke fishing-boat captain who agrees to carry contraband between Cuba and Florida in order to feed his wife and daughters. Of the two, the novel is by far the darker, more complex work. The first time we meet Harry Morgan, he is sitting in a Havana bar watching a gun battle raging out in the street. After seeing a Cuban get his head blown off with a Luger, Morgan reacts with typical Hemingway understatement: "I took a quick one out of the first bottle I saw open and I couldn't tell you yet what it was. The whole thing made me feel pretty bad." Still feeling bad, Harry heads out in his boat on a charter fishing expedition for which he is later stiffed by the client. With not even enough money to fill his gas tanks, he is forced to agree to smuggle some illegal Chinese for the mysterious Mr. Sing. From there it's just a small step to carrying liquor--a disastrous run that ends when Harry loses an arm and his boat. Once Harry gets mixed up in the brewing Cuban revolution, however, even those losses seem small compared to what's at stake now: his very life. Hemingway tells most of this story in the third person, but, significantly, he brackets the whole with a section at the beginning told from Harry's perspective and a short, heart-wrenching chapter at the end narrated by his wife, Marie. In between there is adventure, danger, betrayal, and death, but this novel begins and ends with the tough and tender portrait of a man who plays the cards that are dealt him with courage and dignity, long after hope is gone. --Alix Wilber

A somewhat neglected Hemingway masterpiece finds its way into today's readership. This is a gritty tale of several tragedies of the Depression Era, which Hemingway depicted with an unfailing sense of the injustices, humiliations that the "Conchs" (the Keys' residents as they were called then) suffered. The novel is readable, but tough. Hemingway deploys all his art, his unequaled spare style never failing him, making this an absorbing tale that keep the reader alert at all times. Incidentally, one could also think of Howards Hawks' movie by the same name, with Bogart and Bacall at their best, and a script written by William Faulkner. Place this on your reading list, if you are a Hemingway fan.

I first read this book when I was living and writing in Greece. I was not yet 30. It was interesting to me not only because I had always been profoundly influenced by Hemingway, but also because I had lived in Key West in the late '60's while in the Navy.I just reread it now as I begin my 70th year. The story was deeper and darker to me now. I still marveled at Hemingway's detailed knowledge of the waters off Cuba and Key West and the descriptions that are so accurate and true. The characters that appear in this novel are very three dimensional and the interweaving of their stories build up to and support the tragedy the plot pulls the reader toward. The author also plays with differing points of view, narration, even streams of consciousness that deepen the story through it's twisting course downward.

Although most readers will disagree, this is my favorite Hemingway novel. I rate it four stars as opposed to five only because the changes of narrative view will bother some readers, although I am fine with it. I like this particular Hemingway because I found the main character to be the most engaging. He is a man who doesn't like to compromise, but is finding that approach to life difficult to maintain during the Depression, and his actions become increasingly desperate as time goes by. I also like the setting, which is Key West, Florida. This is the only Hemingway novel set in the U.S. "To Have and Have Not" starts out with a great action scene, which is actually a bit unusual for Hemingway. He tells it in beautiful and dramatic fashion and I found myself wishing he had done it more often. It ends with a view of a part of society that was completely out of reach of the main character, and of most of us. The view of that part of society still resonates today. What is that old saying? The more things change, the more they stay the same...

Another Hemingway masterpiece. Could we really expect less of him? The prose is amazing and the story is captivating. Sad but hilarious at certain points.

This is a basically unenjoyable book that few readers would even finish if not for the unfulfilled hope that Hemingway's exalted reputation would somehow reward one's persistence. The grotesque violence and the deeply embedded racism of the main character are just sickening; the secondary stories of the decadent writers, yachtsmen, and war veterans only add to a thoroughly depressing worldview.

No one can make you feel like Hemingway does and no one closes better. His writing may seem daunting to readers, but the beauty of his work is in it's simplicity. It is easy to read and too easy to capture you. But be careful, Hemingway had a very bleak view and few of his endings are happy.

This is as close to action-adventure as you will get with Hemingway. A hardbitten hard-talking robust roiling ride of a novel it is a tense and intense gripping and memorable read enlivened and elevated by Hemingway's humanity and compassion. There is much breathless action, a host of characters, "haves and have nots", and striking passages of singular and moving beauty. And it is like most of Hemingway life looked at in the face., and so, not always pretty.

I've got to agree with Papa on this one, this is definitely not Hemingway's best work. This novel is actually two short stories and one novella, with the main character Harry Morgan (a smuggler and fisherman going between Cuba and the Florida Keys) linking the three together. The short stories were written well before the rest of the text, then tied together to make a single novel. The first two `sections' (short stories) are fine adventure-type tales about the shady characters of pre-WWII Cuba. The novella starts off as an adventure tale as well in the same vein, but evolves into an introspective story about the value of life, the things the people hold valuable, and what it means to lose them. The latter half of the novella has very little to do with the first half or the other two short sections. I got the impression that EH changed his mind about what he wanted to do with this novel halfway through writing it, but instead of editing the first half for consistency, he just gave up. This makes the overall tale disjointed and puzzling. There are definitely some glimmers of Hemingway at his best in this novel (e.g. the chapter in which Morgan faces the bank robbers on his boat, or the last chapter about what people hold valuable and loss), but EH would have been better served to write to separate, complete tales about each of the threads. I would agree with one of the other reviewer's comments that if this is EH's worst, it is still better than most author's best, but I think that some of the glowing reviews are grossly overstated. This is a flawed work by a great writer in my view, not on the same planet as `For Whom the Bell Tolls' and other EH greats. This is also one of the few cases in which the movie is better than the book.

These books are great and the complete set for around $40 is absolutely worth it. These are good books and my kid loves them.As other reviewers have noted, these British versions of the books use a small, not very kid-friendly font that really does detract from the experience... I have a few of the original ones that were mine when I was a kid and they are, I hate to say, much better, purely due to the better readability of the font and formatting.

These 47 books are a delight for both the reader and the listener. Along with the subtle messages in these books you'll find delightful and colorful pictures and well-written stories. My daughters (in their 30's) still have many of these books they owned as children and now I'm buying a fresh, complete set for my first grandson. My daughters still talk about how much fun it was to use silly voices and animation while reading them. They loved how I yelled the lines of Mr. Noisy, and whispered through most of Mr. Quiet. The "Little Miss" books are equally good. I bought that set as well and will give it at some point in the future.I'm located in Idaho and was slightly concerned about ordering from the UK but decided to trust Amazon. The transaction seems to have gone perfectly. I ordered from Bangzo and wotnix and they arrived the same day. Mine arrived in 11 days. The books measure 5"x 5½". Here's the complete list of titles included -· Mr Tickle· Mr Silly· Mr Uppity· Mr Cool· Mr Good· Mr Rude· Mr Small· Mr Daydream· Mr Forgetful· Mr Nonsense· Mr Clumsy· Mr Noisy· Mr Perfect· Mr Lazy· Mr Jelly· Mr Messy· Mr Clever· Mr Brave· Mr Rush· Mr Busy· Mr Impossible· Mr Tall· Mr Nosey· Mr Quiet· Mr Strong· Mr Dizzy· Mr Topsy-Turvy· Mr Cheerful· Mr Grumpy· Mr Bump· Mr Mean· Mr Greedy· Mr Bounce· Mr Funny· Mr Fussy· Mr Chatterbox· Mr Slow· Mr Mischief· Mr Grumble· Mr Wrong· Mr Sneeze· Mr Happy· Mr Snow· Mr Muddle· Mr Worry· Mr Skinny

I was on the fence whether I should get this or not, as my boys are 10 & 8, and thought they may be too old. However, I remembered loving these books so much as a kid that I've decided to take the chance. Both of them LOVE them! They read all of them several times, laugh out loud, discuss the characters, make up their own characters. These are timeless lovely books.

This is a super cute set. For American readers used to the American versions, there are a few things to note. First is that instead of Mr. Nervous, you get the British version "Mr. Jelly", and instead of Mr. Stingy, you get the British version "Mr. Mean". Also, instead of using a nice bold sans serif typeface for the text (I think they use Helvetica in the American versions), they use a much lighter typeface that looks like Optima. It is still fully legible, but it's a shame because Helvetica works so much better for a children's book, both in that it is simpler to read and it matches the aesthetic of the illustrations while Optima looks out of place. Lastly, on the front and back covers and on the box, they write "Mr." as Americans would. However, in the text of the book, they omit the period: Mr Happy, Mr Grumpy, etc. Not a huge deal, but for little American kids learning to read and spell, it would be nice to A) be consistent and B) learn "correctly". Those are the differences I noticed at a first glance. Also, these books are most definitely paperback. This set is currently listed as hardcover.

I had 5 or 6 of these books as a kid and they were rediscovered in Grammy's closet one day...my kids LOVED them and so I hunted down this complete box set as a Christmas gift for my 4 year old. Months later, we're still reading 3 or 4 of these books every night! The guide on the side of the box makes it easy to find the books by character and number as well. This box contains the UK version of the Mr Men books so some phrases and concepts may need to be clarified for younger US kiddos (Why did he eat a biscuit for tea? Isn't tea a drink?) and Mr. Nervous is known as Mr. Jelly...which the kids thought was really funny. I prefer the UK versions, to be honest, and you probably will as well! The box is a great deal...at about $1 a book these are just as cheap as they were at my local book store in 1981.

Great collection, but shortly after their arrival I received a suggestion from Amazon to buy two other Mr. Men titles that weren't in the "Complete Collection." So... not TOTALLY complete, but still a great set!

This beloved classic is British, but I grew up reading them even though I’m American. I am a school teacher and brought them into my classroom. My students adore them. If I could read them for story time all day I would. The students love it when I read them and they love reading them. Many of them are AR. The vibrant yet simple illustrations intrigue the students and there is always a moral to a story. We also learn new words like Topsy Turvy. There are some British terms so I explain them to my American students and they love them. They try to use them in their conversations.

Not really "Complete", Mr. Moustache, Mr. Adventure, and Mr. Marvelous are not included in this set. There are actually 50 books in the series.
