I am an Adult learner just starting, and after buying this book at my instructors advice, I am a Twinkle Twinkle little star MASTER!!! I can play it all kinds of ways man, just trust me, it is so freaking awesome! You can keep your Mozart and Beethoven, give me some more of that Twinkle Twinkle stuff! Buy this book, and you'll see what I'm talking about. But for real, this is a very awesome book, but just know you will definitely want an instructor, it's not self explanatory, and you'll need someone to give you the tabs and show you techniques. Absolutely get the version with the audio cd, I can't imagine trying to practice at home without it. Great buy.

My 7 year old just started violin lessons for the first time. Her lessons are from a Suzuki teacher, who recommended this book to assist with practicing at home (since there's only one 30-minute lesson per week). The book starts by introducing learners to the parts of the violin and eventually ends with some good, beginner songs. Her teacher said that students can take anywhere from 1-3 years to work through this book, depending on various factors. For $15, it's an excellent supplement to what the teacher offers!I also appreciate the CD that comes with the book. The teacher mentioned how the Suzuki method is big on training the ear. Violin students need to be able to hear themselves and know if they are playing correctly. That can only come by listening to the songs as they are being played correctly. We listen to this CD many evenings during dinner. It makes for nice background music during dinner time, and my daughter is also learning what the songs are supposed to sound like, which is helping to "train" her ear. I thought it was a bit weird at first to realize there is also a piano playing with the violin in the CD. However, I quickly realized that musicians seldom have solos. They need to know how to play with others, so the piano is helping to train her ear as well.

I wish I had noticed this book had four languages! It is like reading instructions to put a desk together. You have to find your language. I did not notice that this was the case.It is a good source for some songs to practice with, but you really need another lesson book and/or insteuctor to be able to use any Suzuki method book. I am not a fan of Suzuki, but I have the cello book because my cello instructor uses Suzuki, so that is what I bought. Songs in the cello book are repeated in the violin book. That makes me familiar with the melodies, allowing me to play with my violin while I wait for my future instructor to be able to start new students again. This instructor will use Suzuki (frowny face), so I will already have the book, unfortunately in four languages!

I grew up learning the Suzuki method for piano, so when I bought a violin I knew I wanted to use the Suzuki method as well. These updated books (well, updated from the '80s) have so much information and theory in the beginning of the book which, as an adult, is really helpful for me to learn before diving into playing the instrument. I'd highly recommend this method to anyone looking to learn the violin (or piano).

Bought this book as a requiement by the teacher my daughter was taking private lessons from. 1 lesson later she didn't jive with the teacher. Money well spent. The cover is shiny though and the pages are crisp. I assume in our house it will maintain this look for years.

This works really well for my kids. Their violin teacher wanted us to get the one with a cd of the music. Thats so helpful. Not only are they learning to read the music, the cd with it helps them play by ear. Really great method for helping kids learn violin. I recommend it. My kids are starting to play so well. There are also many people on YouTube that teach these songs in a learning Tempo. They have helped my kids out immensely as well as their teacher. Hope this helps!

The teacher I contacted encouraged me to play the CD and expose my daughter to the music as often as possible prior to the start of her lessons. I was concerned the music might be grating and/or dull but it is surprisingly quite relaxing. So go ahead and get an early start.

I had to purchase this as a requirement from my daughters violin teacher. Our copy did NOT come with the accompanying CD like it was supposed to so I had to purchase that separately & that was frustrating so that's why I'm taking a star off. The book itself is fine, it is what she needed for her lessons.

This is a well written biography of an American original, Benjamin Franklin. Isaacson begins with some context (page 2): "He was, during his eighty-four-year-long life, America's best scientist, inventor, diplomat, writer, and business strategist, and he was also one of its most practical, though not most profound, political thinkers." The author goes on to say (page 2): ". . .the most interesting thing that Franklin invented, and continually reinvented, was himself. America's first publicist, he was, in his life and in his writings, consciously trying to create a new American archetype. In the process, he carefully crafted his own persona, portrayed it in public, and polished it for posterity."The book traces his life from start to finish. It does not hide the fact that he was a fairly poor "husband" and father, watching his own son become a Tory and essentially giving up on him as a consequence. It notes episodes where he may have gotten caught up in his own persona and image.Nonetheless, he was an original and someone who contributed much to the development of an independent American nation. Part of this is his efforts to engage in self-improvement. A list of "virtues," portrayed on pages 89-90 illustrates. Here, he noted "with an endearing simplicity" key virtues to adhere to, such as temperance ("Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation"), silence, order, resolution, frugality, industry, etc.He was someone who did great work as a publisher, as an inventor and scientist, as a public servant. For instance, the book notes that he was a creator of the "matching grant," a way of making scarce dollars stretch further (page 148). As postmaster, appointed when the colonies were still under British rule, he institute a number of reforms, ending up cutting delivery time of the mail, creating home delivery of mail, and so on. And being entrepreneurial to the core, he also used this opportunity to advance other of his interests (providing jobs for friends, improving his publishing network, invigorating the American Philosophical Society, and making some money in the process). He spent considerable time abroad, in London earlier and in Paris later, as a diplomat and representative of the colonies and later the United States. He was a player in the Continental Congress and was a member of the committee assigned to craft a Declaration of Independence. Very late in life, he served at the Constitutional Convention, although in declining health. All in all, this is a book that depicts Franklin as a complex human being. As noted in the introductory paragraph of this review, he was aware of who he was, how people saw him, and he worked to maintain and develop that persona. And what a persona it was!For someone wishing an accessible and highly readable biography of Franklin, this is an excellent choice.

Other people have covered the details of the book well, so I will compare it to other popular biographies about the Founding Fathers written recently to give the reader an idea of what to expect. The trend in biographies lately seems to be elegant and almost novelistic prose. This book is written in a very different style: simple but not simplistic, accessible but not unintelligent. An unusual aspect is that rather than let one subject flow into another, the chapters are further separated into subheadings (e.g. "The American Philosophical Society", "Supplying General Braddock").The author previously wrote a biography of Steve Jobs, and clearly has an interest in business. Much time is spent on Franklin's early years as a businessman, which I did not find as interesting as his politics. Much time is spent on British colonial economic policy, which I did find very interesting and informative. Additionally, it helped explain why the Tea Partiers were so violently opposed to the taxes and duties. The British government had enacted many policies to keep the colonies economically dependent on the mother country, such as outlawing ironworks in the colonies and suppressing manufacturing. I've read quite a few books about the Revolution and this was the most unexpectedly edifying on the motivations of the rebels in that aspect. This book justifies it's price on that subject alone. (Those uncomfortable with economics should know it was explained clearly enough that I could understand it well, despite having never taken an economics course.)Additionally, Franklin finally gets his due as a world-class scientist in this biography. As a scientist myself, I wish more had gone into the process of his many discoveries, but it seems likely that there just wasn't enough source material to expand.A note of criticism: in terms of psychological insight, the book leaves you a little bit wanting. His personal relationships with both men and women are notably detached and a little cold, but no real explanation is given for why this should be so for such an extroverted and warm man. The book quotes the opinion of other commentarors, such as conservative columnist David Brooks, quite a few times on the nature of his political beliefs. I would have preferred the authors own interpretations. The description of Franklin's transition from a peacemaker who finds himself the target of anger from American rebels for being too inclined to seek compromise- to one of the most passionate voices for independence is elegantly done. When I finished the book I felt like I had real understanding of Franklin as a person full of contractions. A man who loathed conflict but supported a revolution, who wrote The Way to Wealth but was an ardent champion of the common man, who was the darling of the French Court but disliked aristocracy... In other words, a real person, not a cardboard cutout.

This is the third copy of this book I have purchased, having given away my other two, that how much I love it. Isaacson wrote an excellent biography of Franklin, one that I've reread a few times. I know the expression"like you were there" is overused but this book actually makes you feel you knew the real Franklin. I've been reading a lot about the younger Franklin recently, his time as an apprentice to his brother James, a printer, his self-education, his escape to Philadelphia, but this book presents the complete Franklin in a way thats reachable. Its not complicated reading, its an exciting story that makes you totally familiar with the man, warts and all.

Benjamin Franklin was a complicated personality whose political views changed over time. Franklin used Greek Philosophy as stepping stones from which he derived his first views on politics, virtues, and moral pragmatism but he shaped and modified these views as he aged. It is probably impossible to capture the essence of Benjamin Franklin's nature but this biography does it as well as it can be done. Franklin was invaluable when it came to editing the Declaration of Independence and negotiating the post-war treaties with France and England which established the first 13 colonies as an independent nation. Franklin preached tolerance and patience to the delegates as they argued about the creation of a representative form of government for the colonies. Concise and impartial this biography credits the imaginative Benjamin Franklin with having a significant influence on American culture and politics.

I read an excerpt or an interview about Finding Your Element somewhere and somehow I got hooked into the idea that this book contained some revolutionary wisdom on discovering your true calling in life. For me, this wasn't the case. The book is stuffed with a great many tired platitudes, and its "revolutionary insight" basically boils down to the obvious idea of "do what you love."I'm not saying this is bad advice, or that the commonsense wisdom, spoken through the silver-tongued mouth of Sir Ken Robinson, won't inspire some to get off their butts and take action. But the majority of the book contains disappointingly obvious cliches backed up by real-life accounts of people who have followed this obvious advice, and, unsurprisingly, had positive results. *It worked for Sally-Jo... It can work for you, too!*For me, the book never digs deep enough into the gritty, challenging areas of helping people transition to a meaningful career. Rarely if ever, for example, does the text address the fact that we live in a techno-industrial civilization that is specifically designed to prevent most people from fulfilling their individual creative potential, and to enslave us in a monolithic, hierarchical corporate economy. "You always have choices," Sir Ken boasts confidently. Well, in today's world of neoliberal domination, choices are becoming narrower and narrower for the vast majority of the population. The book feels somewhat out of touch with the struggles of everyday people. It's very genial throughout, and the tone is avuncular, as if a rich old uncle is talking to his young rich nephew about whether or not he should be a horse jockey or continue in the family silver business. It's not easy to find my element when I can barely stay afloat in the economy, and it's a tragedy that Finding Your Element is such a luxury in contemporary society, where there's more than enough wealth for everyone to share, were it more equally distributed.I'm fighting desperately to find my element, but sometimes I feel it's a losing battle because of the intense pressure the system puts on my back to conform and become a wage slave so I can survive.Criticisms aside, if you're looking for a basic book to give you a few ideas about how to expand your world, you could do worse. Some bits of wisdom that genuinely resonated:• Finding your element is about discovering what lies within you and, in doing so, transforming what lies before you.• Being in your element gives you energy. Not being in it takes it from you.• Many of the opportunities you have in your life are generated by the energy you create around you.• The search for your element is a two-way journey: an inward journey to explore what lies within you and an outward journey to explore opportunities in the world around you.• Do all you can to explore new avenues of possibilities in yourself and in the world around you.• You may be better than you think at what you love. You may underestimate your talent because you set unreasonably high standards for yourself. Having high standards is good, provided you're not immobilized by self-criticism.• Connecting with people who share your Element can have tremendous benefits for you and them.• The most common regret: Not having the courage to live a life true to yourself.

Ken Robinson wrote this book as a follow-up to his other book The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything by Ken Robinson, Lou Aronica (Reprint Edition) [Paperback(2009)]. He takes a 360 view of your life and walks you through it all. You do a series of exercises where you ask yourself deep questions. You find your element when you find the intersection between your passions and aptitudes. He has three major principles:Principle #1: Your Life is Unique. We're all different. We're all a mix of nature and nurture.Principle #2: You create your own life.Carl Jung: "I am not what has happened to me, I am what I choose to become."Principle #3: Life is OrganicWe all change. We don't have a linear path. He incorporates a lot of examples of successful people who had a completely nonlinear path to success.Vivek Wadhwa, famous for his work on immigrants working in the technology field in the United States, realized that "there is no link between what you study in college and how successful or otherwise you are later in your life."Ken Robinson talks about a lot of the existing literature and methods for finding out what your passion is and he's fairly critical of them. He talks about what's called the Forer Effect, also known as the Barnum Effect. You mold your personality to conform with what people tell you your personality incorporates. Robinson is in favor of using personality types to describe yourself, but he says not to let the personality definitions (MBTI for example) limit you.He also takes a lot of time to talk about happiness and positive psychology. He differentiates between your physical and spiritual well-being. When I was in the Andes and taking an anthropology class, I learned that the indigenous culture believes in two types of life force. One is the breath of life and the other I would call the force of spirit, just like Scott Russell Sanders' The Force of Spirit. He talks about Gretchen Rubin The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun.His definition of happiness comes from Sonja Lyubomirsky: Happiness is the experience of joy, contentment, and well-being combined with a sense that life is good and worthwhile. I felt like that was a really comprehensive yet concise summary and I think that the happiness section was the best part of this book.Robinson goes on to talk about the 5 different kinds of well-being: career, social, financial, physical, and community. He asks you what sorts of hurdles or responsibilities you have and what sorts of risks that you can take. He asks you who you want to be, but in a much more specific way.He also talks about Bonnie Ware The Top Five Regrets of the Dying: A Life Transformed by the Dearly Departing, because a lot of his action steps at the end of the book have to do with mitigating risks. I found it interesting that a lot of the suggestions that he had were in line with things that Barry Schwartz said at the end of The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less.I've seen Robinson's TED talk and expected more of the book to be about the education system and creativity. While he does talk about them, he encourages the reader to engage in a lot of introspection through a variety of exercises; each chapter ends with a few questions about you and your life. My favorite exercises had to do with vision boards. I used Pinterest to create them and I really loved having a concrete, pictorial representation of more abstract concepts, such as the activities that I do in daily life.Robinson also says that it's all an iterative process and we grow organically (Principle #3), so nobody should expect his or her desires at one point to be the same as at another point in his or her life. I know that it's valuable for me to read this as a recent college graduate and that I'll read it again, further down the line.

Where do I begin! Inspiring. Probative. Gnawing at your possibly "less than you had hoped for" life. Sir Ken shares the process to releasing the joyful life that you are meant to live. Without the "if only", "I'm too old" "I could never" "my parents would be disappointed" restraints, you will learn step by step how to make your tomorrow reveal the unique you. As a nearly seventy year old, I reflected with each question Sir Ken encouraged one to ponder, "Am I enduring my life?" "If so, let's begin to turn that around." This book will empower the reader to step out of the conformities that have become entrenched in our educational institutions of learning. I was an instructor of mathematics, music and physical education for forty plus years. As I was reading and rereading Sir Ken's thoughts, I imagined every educator implementing even one or two of them throughout her/his lessons. From the first page to the last, you will travel a journey of personal enlightenment. If you are one of the precious few who has been true to herself living the life of joyous fulfillment, you will celebrate your uniqueness with each page you turn. And, then, give this book to those you know and love who may be struggling with "where do I go from here?" This book is a gift every person must give her/him self, most especially if you are a professional educator.

One of my Top Ten favorite books. I re-read it every couple of years because it's jammed full of fascinating material. The material is scientific and informative, but written so well that it's never a tiresome read. In the last few years I've gotten away from giving wine or liquor as presents, and turned to giving books instead. (I'm old, as are many of my friends.) This one gets consistently great reviews.

I bought this copy for my grandson. It is a classic and beautifully written. Bryson takes complex scientific concepts and makes them easily accessible. I and my friends are big Bryson fans.

My book club accidentally put the "really" in the title of the book they meant to choose, the adult version, "A Short History of Nearly Everything." I thoroughly enjoyed the young people's version. I learned a lot and re-learned things I'd forgotten from years-ago science classes. Plan to pass this along to my grandson. The book's two-page chapters make it perfect for a quick bedtime lesson or science report.

This book contains some great, good-humored images that help to explain really big ideas. Protein formation, the cosmos, and the connection between currents and weather patterns are just some of the concepts touched upon in attractive two-page spreads. Our family is using the book as a "jumping off" point for my son's sixth grade science while in home school. He reads a spread and then hits the internet to research some key idea that has caught his fancy. He's been able to use some of the things he's learned in the book to connect to other content areas, too. For example, he commented that Greenland would probably be warmer if the Atlantic Ocean's salinity wasn't so high (He was thorough in his explanation, but it was quite involved for the purposes of this review).I would highly recommend the book. It's got high-level concepts written in the perfect language for middle-schoolers to grasp.

Actually I got this book for my little 8 year old niece who is a history 'buff". She loved it. She even took this book to school for show and tell.

I bought an earlier version of this book for my Dad when he was still with us. He loved it and I often perused it when visiting. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Get it - you'll be happy you did!

I hated school and studying as a kid. I read the adult version of this book and was amazed how much i learned from a very well presented version of the sciences. Bryson has such an inviting style of presentation he keeps you going.I bought 3 copies for my grandchildren and they all are enjoying it now.I Highly recommend this ineresting and very educational book.

I had hoped to give this book to an older child, but when I received it found that it was not quite as mature as I had hoped. That said, it makes a wonderful gift for a curious child who is interested in the natural world and has many questions that a parent can't always answer. The book is approachable and understandable no matter how "difficult" the question. A good place to start discussions with your child.

This book is mainly demos of 6-8 photos of a painting at various stages, and long text descriptions of the order that colors are applied. If this is how you want to learn, you might enjoy the book. I found very few ideas or techniques to remember. The most helpful demo for me was a close-up scene of two blond children on a beach. I might refer to it for portrait painting help.

When you are an artist, you tend to collect a lot of books on the " how to's " and many of them end up on the bookshelf and not being used. This one is a total exception! She has some wonderful techniques for painting sunlight and shadows and she is easy to follow. She goes step by step and has some great demonstrations. I use this book all the time because I tend to forget stuff, so I grab her book and can easily look it up. Well worth the price!!

The late Maggie Price was known for her vibrant landscapes. It is no longer possible to take a class or workshop with her, so this book is a wonderful substitute, full of thoughtful information and gorgeous demonstrations. I'm delighted to have this generous book for my reference library. Highly recommend it for anyone wishing to build or improve their skills in pastel or other media.

I am enjoying this book however I find it very difficult. her work is complex and beautiful. I am enjoying the challenge of trying the lessons but, believe only seasoned artists will enjoy it.

Painting Sunlight and Shadow with Pastels: Essential Techniques for Brilliant EffectsI love this book!It goes through the basics. It covers shadows and lighting in every possible scenario. Shadows are often a difficult and debatable subject between artists. There aren't a lot of easy to read books about shadows, dedicated entirely to the wonderful medium of pastel. I like Maggie's approach and have learn a lot from her book. I love just looking at her paintings, as though the book is a coffee table, not just an educational one.She has produced a good book, full of information for the beginner and more advance artist alike.

Clearly laid out and described. Makes any topic possible. If the hardest part is just beginning, this is the book for you. Inspirational for those with a little experience wanting to improve.

This book written by Maggie Price who was an icon in the pastel painting world is a tribute to her wonderful talent. Many other pastelists are included in this book ,the information is invaluable and is a treasure to have.

Perfect for me. Techniques for beginning a painting are all laid out right in the beginning. Then you are shown techniques for certain situations in landscapes. Its very well illustrated with progressive photos for each scenario. A book that will STAY in this artists library!

This book is a must have for financial services professionals that want to grow both personally and professionally. Shawn has created an ACTIONABLE book broken into short chapters that conclude with questions and action steps to help you bring your true business into focus and grow. His examples help stretch your mind and imagination to think big. This is a well-researched book and Shawn and his team are very approachable. When I emailed his office to ask about the effectiveness of direct mail marketing in 2017 they arranged a 20-minute call with Shawn. On our call, Shawn invested his time to understand my business, answered my questions and then gave me a few great tips I am implementing. He didn't have to do that, but he did, and I appreciate that.

Shawn Sparks does an amazing job inside this book showing successful financial advisors how to become legendary - long term and on their own terms. It does a nice job of providing tactics, strategies & most importantly mindset coaching. It's not for everyone though. To really use what's inside someone would have to be serious about becoming great in the financial field. Other books might give better "paint by number" approaches to take someone from startup to moderately successful. But I haven't read anything better for those already successful who want to reach a new level.

So much better than even expected! A wealth of information and great tips and organization! A worthwhile read! Apparently two more words are required .

Great book for any advisor starting their wealth business. Even an advisor wanting to make more of their current business and grow/strengthen thier business. Insight full and useful in several areas.

This book is the holy grail for the financial professional wanting to scale their practice in a meaningful and sustainable way. It's a collection of best practices, sales concepts and industry proven strategies from the most elite financial professionals in the business. Why recreate the wheel when you can learn directly from the best? Shawn does a remarkable job compressing a decade worth of notes, ideas and business strategies into an easy to read and even easier to implement format. Highly recommended!!

Shawn Sparks hit a home run with this book. He has taken what he has learned from coaching some of the top financial advisors in the country over the past decade and created a blueprint for others. Whether it's marketing help that you need or help with converting high net-worth prospects into clients, this book provides solutions. It's also very common for successful advisors to become slaves of their own businesses. Shawn lays out exactly how to avoid this by sharing time management and efficiency secrets from some of the top advisors in the industry. It's 100% worth the read!!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked this book up. I was skeptical thinking - "Oh just another one of THOSE books." Well ...I was WRONG. This book is amazing. It discusses real life issues that we as advisors and entrepreneurs have to deal with each and every day and how to overcome those obstacles to optimize your practice. If you've ever had an obstacle in your business that you needed to overcome, or needed help growing your business...... you need to read this book!!

After a decade in the industry I found this book spot on of what it takes to cultivate a successful financial career. Kudos to Shawn for taking the time to put together a great coaching literature to help others reach their goals and dreams by sharing not only his tips, but the wealth of knowledge he has collected from top advisors throughout the nation during his career!Read.This.Book

Review

Car and Driver, August 2006 Included in “The Homemades: Yes you can build a sports car for just a few grand” “There’s a good deal of interest these days in backyard car-building, thanks to Ron Champion. In 1996, he wrote a book, Build Your Own Sports Car for as Little as £250. In Yankee greenbacks, that’s about $465. The book shows how to build an inexpensive sports car practically from scratch, but more important, it can get a gearhead thinking, ‘Hey, I can do that!’”

This is the original book on how to build the Locost sportscar, basically a Lotus Seven replica. It has excellent color photos of most of the steps required to build the car as well as all the dimensions for most fabricated parts. If you decide to build one, you may have to do some parts substitutions though because the book was based on using British Ford parts. If you are in the US they may be hard to find now. If you don"t know how to weld, you can obtain ready-made tube frames, nose pieces and windshields from suppliers like Kinetic Vehicles. The car can be built on other running gear if you can't find a junked-out British Ford . It also has information on how to modify suspension units for the lighter car, etc. A must buy if you plan to build your own car. even if it is your own design.

I started out with How to Build a Cheap Sports Car.Good read for all the little things you may not think of.This book talks about Ron ChampionBuild Your Own Sports Car for as Little as £250 and Race It!, 2nd Ed.By Ron Champion Blueprints plans and drawings. Not buying, But buildingNext How to Build Your Own Tiger Avon SportscarBlueprints plans and drawings, And some body parts.Build Your Own Sports Car: On a Budget Mr. Chris GibbsBlueprints plans and drawings, And talks about downloading pdffor ( MAZDA MX-5 MX5 MIATA )These are must have books for building a car for very little money,And mostly hand tools. built in a small place. for the working class man.If you don't have deep pockets. Building a locost lotus 7 replica,With good gas mileage too! is for you.

I'm building a "Locost", based on the book. There are a few errors in the dimensions and some of the information is incomplete. You need to use it carefully. Fortunately there are good support networks and supplemental information available on line.

Good general info, but sorely needs an update for the 21st century. Should be, "BYO SPORTS CAR for as little as $10,000"

There are only a few of us out there. Choose carefully, take your time. BTW, it's a rush to get it out there. U won't save a lot of cash, but the things U learn will amaze you. Then U can buy a classic (A/H, MG, MB, that will actually rise in value as it grows older)

GREAT BOOK! This is really a classic of the kit-car age showing how to construct a Lotus from a cheap RWD donor.

Much better then the Chiltons version that I also own. It is expensive but very much worth it. Give a lot of insanely good info. Totally worth it for Locost fans!
