From Library Journal

Most people can be divided into two groups: classifiers and nonclassifiers. Ritvo (history, MIT) brings order to the history of classifiers of the natural world. Looking primarily at 18th- and 19th-century Britain, she puts taxonomic, or classification, practices into their cultural context. Ritvo begins with a chapter on broad zoological classifications and their problems, followed by one on the history of zoological nomenclature?how and why we use the scientific names we use. The first two chapters are then placed in a wider context by chapters on hybrid animals, natural and unnatural monsters and abnormalities, and carnivorism. Ritvo's work is an insightful look at the development of English zoology and its strong ties to cultural context. As in her similar The Animal Estate (Harvard Univ., 1987), Ritvo rarely lapses into academic jargon. Recommended for larger public and academic libraries.?Eric D. Albright, Duke Medical Ctr. Lib., Durham, N.C.Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews

This wide-ranging study of the ``heroic age of scientific classification'' attempts--with only partial success--to place the taxonomic advances and prejudices of 18th- and 19th-century England in a broader cultural context. MIT historian Ritvo (The Animal Estate, 1987) first analyzes the politics and ``broader allegiances'' that clouded the objectivity of zoologists who embraced the gargantuan task of ordering the biological world, even as British imperialism was rapidly expanding their knowledge of that world. The author exhaustively details the unprofessional behavior scientists resorted to for personal gain (such as needlessly inventing new species and naming them after their employers). Then she expands her definition of taxonomy to include the informal classification of animals by amateur naturalists, groups with specialized relationships to animals (like farmers, breeders, hunters, and pet owners), and the general meat-eating public. Ritvo persuasively argues that ``each of the ways . . . people imagined, discussed, and treated animals inevitably implied some taxonomic structure.'' Her analysis of how British sportsmen classified wild animals as game or vermin points to a more fundamental and still prevalent assumption that nature exists solely for human entertainment. Similarly, her analysis of the conflicts between hunters, farmers, and pet owners over the proper role of wild animals describes a cultural battle yet raging. Too often, though, Ritvo shies away from social analysis with a sense of propriety rivaling that of her Victorian subjects. Her introduction notes that ``worries about the concupiscence of human females structured the theory and practice of animal breeding''; in the text these worries are mentioned only briefly, and Victorian attitudes about female sexuality are dodged entirely. This hit-and-miss social commentary, combined with a penchant for inflated academic language (allayed only slightly by period cartoons), sabotages Ritvo's goal of illuminating the cultural ramifications of Enlightenment zoology. Harriet Ritvo's The Platypus and the Mermaid (and other figments of the classifying imagination) is an interesting look at the Victorian passion for classifying things. The book ranges and prowls over many communities from the scientific to the farmer to the sideshow. This is more about the lack of firm boundaries in Victorian society as science tried to define itself than the author's whim. But the author does handle the twists and turns adroitly. This is a good read and a wonderful look at the Victorian period and what the scientist and the lay person considered important in their need to classify their world, particulary as it grew with the growth of the British Empire.

The Teeth of the Tiger (Jack Ryan Novels), by Tom Clancy

From Publishers Weekly

While last year's Clancy novel, Red Rabbit, hit #1 first week out, sales reportedly were down from previous books, as were the thumbs of critics, who found the book slow, talky and lacking in action. In an effort to repair the damage as well as to revitalize his long-running Jack Ryan series, Clancy has scrapped his usual one-novel-every-two-years cycle to deliver a shorter, swifter tale featuring not Ryan but Ryan's son, also known as Jack, as well as two of young Jack's cousins, fraternal twins Dominic and Brian Caruso, the former an FBI agent, the latter a Marine. All three are recruited to a privately funded vigilante organization, Hendley Associates, that aims to strike at America's enemies-particularly, terrorists-when the Feds can't or won't. The narrative divides into two parts. The first concerns the training of the three, with young Ryan basically pushing his way into the organization while Dominic is signed on after taking the law into his own hands by shooting a child killer, and Brian after demonstrating smarts during combat in Afghanistan. Their grapplings with the moral and logistical demands of their new jobs alternate with a villains' plot, as Islamic terrorists cut a deal with Colombian drug smugglers, sneak into the U.S. and move toward their killing-field objectives, four shopping malls in mid-America. The plot strands tie up in a terrifically exciting sequence, the novel's highlight, as Dom and Brian, by chance shopping at one mall, take down four of the terrorists. But the terrorists kill scores of innocents, so the rest of the novel details American vengeance-the teeth of the tiger-as the twins fly to Europe, followed by Jack, to take out several of the terrorists' handlers. This isn't Clancy's strongest novel, but it's a big improvement over Red Rabbit. Geopolitical analysis and operational details overwhelm the few action sequences, perhaps to the chagrin of many Clancy fans, but the author knows this stuff like no one else and delivers it all in his inimitable clipped manner. Clancy's smart flag-waving and targeting of terrorists will please many, of course, and leaves plenty of room for sequels. Expect generally satisfied fans.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This novel is about the recruitment of three newcomers to join a supersecret organization that is devoted to killing or capturing terrorists and other bad guys. There is much suspense and many murders (by both good people and bad guys).Unfortunately, this novel begins with far too many extended descriptions of mundane events, requiring much skimming, looking for content.Murders commence again toward the end of Chapter 14, when a team of terrorists emerge from a men's room in a mall in Charlottesville, VA, shout "Allah Ackbar" and shoot a black security guard. Then another member of the team of terrorists spray the mall with machine gun fire. Two of our newcomers, twins Brian and Dominic Caruso, are (amazingly) in the mall. Dominic shoots and kills the second terrorist. Brian is almost killed by another terrorist, but his machine gun (also amazingly) is out of ammunition, and by the the time he reloads, Brian has disappeared. The third recruit's name is Jack Ryan Jr., and he has been assigned the title of analyst. He learns the name of the banker who is funding the teams of terrorists, and is given attaboys by the members of his organization. After this incident, things return to normal (more b. s. requiring skimming), with some exceptions. Unfortunately, these detrimental factors continue for the rest of the novel. Were it not for the many detrimental factors, I would have rated this novel a very good read. Instead, I found it barely readable, and have rated it accordingly

I think I've read all of the Jack Ryan books and I hate to admit it but I was a little disappointed with the first Jack Ryan Jr. book. With the possible exception of Without Remorse / Executive Orders, all of the Jack Ryan books were complete stories that often referred to events in other books. The Teeth of the Tiger is like an unfinished symphony. The book builds an interesting story and then just kind of ends - as if to meet a publishing deadline. There were a lot of unanswered questions which, hopefully, are addressed in Dead or Alive

If you like Tom Clancy novels, this is a good one to avoid - you probably won't like it. If this were Tom's first ever novel, it might be easy to overlook the deficiencies in this book. It really reads like it was ghost written. There are a couple of hallmarks of Clancy novels: character development, and a plot that gathers velocity for a fingernail biting finish. This book lacks either. As a follow on to the Jack Ryan universe, the attempt is made to introduce the next generation. Jack Jr seems to be afraid to step out of his parents' shadow, yet his peers and bosses see him as a child wonder and give him praise and assignments that have little evidence he is capable of. We are introduced (suddenly) to his two cousins: an FBI agent and a Marine. Somehow, the two seem interchangeable, and their adventures would be more at home in a James Bond book than a Clancy novel (they even allude to this). But the plot is so thin and one-dimensional it is hard to believe Clancy really wrote it. The introduction builds up this idea of collaboration between terrorists and a drug cartel, but this turns out to be a very minor part of the story. Then, along the way, it looks like there will be a major battle between the US and a terrorist organization. There are subtle hints about where this is going, but the story line never develops. All of the previous Clancy novels I've read spend the first 2/3 of the story setting up an action-packed ending that leaves the good guys clear winners, the bad guys clear losers, and readers eagerly anticipating the next novel. This one ends as the first 2/3 of a novel: The stage seems to be set for a dramatic ending, but it never comes. In fact, I couldn't believe that the story doesn't end - it just stops. As I said at the beginning, if you like a good Clancy novel, this will be a major disappointment.

Very hard to believe Tom Clancy wrote this book. I'm a huge Clancy fan and even enjoyed the new non-Clancy written novels. But "...Tiger" was a stinker. If this had been his first it would have one-and-done. Most every other book is worth your time but bring Nodoze if you want to get through this amateurish boor-fest.

Kim Fielding is an extraordinary storyteller. This is the story of two incredibly endearing but damaged men. Jimmy, a drifter, who gave a lift to an old man who died in his car leaving a letter Jimmy took as his duty to deliver to his son in Rattlesnake. And Shane, a bartender at an inn who gives him a job and a place to stay—he has been in an accident that ended his life as he knew it and forced him to find a new place in the world and accept his limitations. Jimmy has been unable to stay anywhere for years, he feels trapped and has to keep moving. Now, at Rattlesnake, with Shane, a trust and sense of belonging begin to develop, scaring him senseless. This is the story of their journey, told beautifully, it carries you with them, with their insecurities, their tenderness and their fears. It is a must read!

I have been disappointed with contemporary mm romances in the past few months until this one. This has to be my favorite from this writer and one which I will reread, which is very rare for me as I have such a lot to get through. Deeply emotional and touching, Jimmy and Shane characters are so beautifully written and have me rooting for them till the last page. So glad for the last chapter which gives such a satisfying ending to these two men who have gone through so much and finally found a home with each other. Especially Jimmy who got under my skin right from the beginning and have me all teary eyed in parts. The story is told from Jimmy's view but in no way is Shane's character sidelined which is what fine story telling is all about. I also enjoy the town itself with its solid cast of characters. The atmosphere is quiet, the pace almost slow but never dull, which fits the story so well. This one is easily the best contemporary romance I have read this year. Such a gem. Highly recommended.

A beautifully written sparkler in M/M romance ! Jimmy Dorcett, 43, bearded, worn looking and faded. He's never had a warm, welcoming home. His life is about to change as he picks up an old guy hitchhiking in the cold. Tom had a story, and Jimmy was happt to drive him to find his long lost son. The trip holds a twist, and we see our Jimmy end up in Rattlesnake. The historic town held many surprises and even more interesting people. He'll stick around. Jimmy finds himself drawn to Shane, 33, the limping bartender cowboy, who is tall, slim and scared. The character's stories are fascinating, and the writing is superb. We feel like we are there; with magnificent descriptive windows into the town and lives therein.Super anticipation and hot, raw sexiness shine through. Issues arise and are handled. As the tale moves along we understand our men, their fears and hopes, their problems and solutions. Marvelous !An AMAZING GEM in the M/M romance world.Highly recommended to all. ENJOY !====================

I absolutely loved this book. It was everything I was looking for when I picked it up. It got angst, lovable characters, including SCs, a fun setting, some sweet cuteness and good backstories.Let's not lie, the plot is pretty straighforward and I can't say I was surprised by where it went and how it ended (although that last chapter is pretty great and I loved that the author didn't write the obvious ending) and it's a bit insta-lovey. The writing style didn't win me over right away but I got used to it and in the end, despite all that, I cannot bring myself to put it less than 5 stars because the characters are so good. Their weaknesses and strengths, how they deal with things and talk about things. Their history too.Great book, highly recommend. Plus, it features older characters and that's always nice to find

“Don’t wait. You got stuff in your life needs fixin’, you gotta fix it now, while you can.”Rattlesnake by Kim Fielding is a realistically probable love story because of its depth and complexity of the main characters. This is not a story of love with electricity or fire and definitely not with cover-magazine types guys. There are lots of people like Jimmy Dorsett, drifters, but nobody sees them. They lived in crap motels, under bridges and in empty buildings and when they die, nobody misses them. They're always running away from place to place.Shane Little is former cowboy with a traumatic brain injury by a tragic accident in his past. He has a amazing huge family who stay behind him as a solid foundation.“It began with a man alone in the wide, empty desert driving a decrepit old Ford with a dead man riding shotgun. But the tale progressed to two men together, alive and dancing and ready to establish their very own home. Jimmy was confident the ending was a long, long time away. “Well, this is exactly what I want every romance to be like. It is a brilliant example how the simplicity could be a real beauty. This is one of the best books I've read this year. It was my first book by this author and definitely will not be my last

This was an excellent book. There was not anything really complex or involved about it. It ended up, in the end, about people dealing with their lives and deciding that what they wanted was worth it.Please don't think that any of that takes away from how good the story is. The writing is excellent: succinct, sharp, descriptive. Dialogue is also good. It flows naturally.I enjoyed the characters. They are very real, in that that they have flaws. Nothing is whitewashed to make it a rosy romantic picture. Also, the main characters are also unique. They are individuals who end up falling in love with the problems that go along with it.

First I must say this is an ADULT book and the prudish need not apply! Two vampire kings whose covens have, until fairly recently, been at war. Now each king must choose a human female in order to produce an heir for each coven (vampire females don't breed well). Each chooses a different lady, but neither wants to be mated to a vampire. As it turns out, both vampire kings must seek the hand of the same human lady (who's still not interested). Overcoming her resistance, while still hating each other isn't in the cards. Can the two alphas stop fighting & share? It doesn't take long before enough "action" takes place that there is another "complication". Will even this fact be enough to end the animosity between two head strong alpha males? The sex (there is plenty of that) is thoroughly enjoyed by all involved and the three-way action is well and tastefully done. There were some mechanical issues which to my mind did not detract from the story. As for the complaining done by the "female" I think her position was such that her complaints were fully warranted in order to get the males to stop fighting and act appropriately. It shows even the most bull-headed alpha males can "see the light" if the lady is strong and persistent enough! Don't give up ladies we can sometimes be trained.

*My usual disclaimer applies*I tried to give this book a chance, I really wanted to like it, but no. I know that first books in a series can be rough, or at least rougher than the books that come after it, but Chosen by the Vampire Kings is too rough for my liking. First of all, the main summary of the book does not mention a threesome of any kind, there is just a disclaimer before the summary about this book containing 'menage'. Second, this book is supposed to be about a BBW (Big Beautiful Woman), which usually means that she is supposed to be at the very least 200 lbs. yet in the book Tanya is just a little overweight, and is in a healthy range. That does not make her a BBW. Thirdly, there were some grammatical and spelling errors. These three inconsistencies and mistakes I can deal with, but the rest of the book I cannot. My main issue is that the content seems FORCED, especially the situations and dialogue. It doesn't help that there is no world building, and the characters are not fleshed out. For example, in the beginning, Tanya comes across as a reserved person, but strong, yet throughout the book she cycles between being that strong person and then suddenly acting like a weak damsel in distress. Is she supposed to be strong or not? Another example is her 'reluctance' in being a vampire bride. She was so against it and she thinks about 'escaping' and 'returning home' yet her words and actions prove otherwise. Any protestations she makes are extremely half-assed.Another example is when Staphany, a vampire character, continuously lets slip information about both kings and the vampire world, yet when Tanya asks her to elaborate, she says to 'ask Brant' or 'ask Zane' and refuses to say any more. She does this often, and it's annoying.Another issue I have is that the story does not flow. First, we never really get a clear picture on how Tanya came to be at the ceremony. There is supposed to be a test, she's supposed to meet certain criteria in order to attend, yet hints in the explanation say that she didn't meet the criteria, yet she was forced to attend anyway. Did I miss something somewhere? Second, the whole idea of the M/M/F (Male/Male/Female). The whole process didn't happen naturally. It is first explained that ONE WOMAN each would be chosen by the kings to become their queens and mate them in order to have heirs. Ok, that's easy to understand. These women are the kings' only hope in the continuation of their race, once the woman is chosen, there will be no other. Again easy to understand. We get a brief explanation on the mating habits of vampires, then all of a sudden it's explained that sometimes the females of the race will mate more than one male in order to keep them from fighting over her or something. HUH? Where did that come from? Obviously it was put there to give credence to Tanya becoming a mate to both kings, but I honestly think that that little tidbit did not need to be there. For me it interrupted the flow of the story. Tanya mating two men doesn't have to be the normal thing, it could have been presented as something unique but special.I could go on, and have even highlighted multiple examples in the text, but this review is long already. For the reasons stated above, I give this book two stars.

I've read The Program series without reading The Chosen Series and it can be done as it focuses entirely on a different aspect of the vampire story, namely the guys who work for both Zane and Brant. I'm not a fan of manage books and avoid them, but I wanted to read how such dominant males ended up sharing one human female. This book was long and I understood the need to explain how Tanya fell for both males and not being a fan of threesomes, I cringed at times with the sex scenes involving all three of them. That's just me though. If you don't mind readng these books, more power to you. I definitely enjoyed The Program Series more out of the two series. However, this book is well-written and kept the action going without a dull moment. If you liked this book, you'll like the sequel to this one called Mated to the Vampire Kings, although I should warn you, there are 2 other books after this one before you get to the sequel that shows the drama of a very pregnant Tanya and the circumstances of the birth. Other previous characters from those books make appearances as well, so if you don't want spoilers, read in sequence.

I was really disappointed. This story is pretty much the same as her water dragons story. Names and species changed but the rest was interchangeable. Both stories centered on an outspoken female. This author drove me crazy using 'tramped down' instead of tamped down many times. And then there was a breakfast of toast and pancakes with syrup and grated cheese - yuck. It also is a bit on the young adult side. Needless to say I should have passed on this.
