Torrey's well written book touches the heart as she goes through her days in the classroom with her special education students. She introduces each child and their needs, but especially Venus her most challenging student, who most people had given up on helping. Torrey's tenacity and concern for Venus worked small "miracles" in this troubled and abused child's life. There were times while reading the book that I couldn't put it down and read with a broken heart for Venus.I highly recommend this book for your reading. If you've ever spent time with children in an educational setting, you will especially enjoy Beautiful Child.

This fabulous page turner was so moving from beginning to end . As I continued to read about Torey’s determination to help Venus , I wondered if I would have had the patience or willingness to persevere as she did. Kudos to Torey for reinforcing my belief that where there is life, there is hope.

I am just an aid for special ed kids, arriving at this career about 10 years ago at age 50. Thankfully, teachers have allowed me to sing with and to them. I have held them in my arms. I have made learning a game. I have danced with a child who could barely walk. I have had fleeting moments of joy and despair, and thought more than once I should write a book about it. Now I don't have to. Torey captured this gift she and I were both given. I say this not for bragging, but so kindred spirits may conceive of doing this undervalued but priceless work. Torey, you are a beautiful teacher. Well done.Lynn

I have followed Torey Hayden's teaching career from the beginning. Each year her teaching methods srrm to evolve as she is met with a new group of students. All of Torey's pupils are individuals to her, each with their own set of problems and strengths. Most learn much from Torry, who seemo to learn much from each of them.

The amazing part about this story is that it's true and Torey touched real people and changed their lives for the better. Truly astounding. I must admit I wasn't a complete fan, but definitely a great read.BTW: I'm biased - focus on learning theories involving behavior mod as a psych student.

a vey heartwarming story about a teacher of a special needs student who has severe mental problems. The teacher has to learn to go inside the child's personal life and home life to fully understand how to reach the child. She goes above and beyond to unravel the façade of the child. To understand the complexities of the child's behavior she must first learn to understand the child.

When author Torey Hayden first meets Venus, then 7, the child is perched atop a high wall on the school playground. Venus rarely speaks and goes into attack mode when jostled by other children on the playground. Venus remains a silent observer in the class she shares with 9-year-old Billy, a gifted child with a minor case of dyslexia and a propensity for impulsive behavior; 8-year-old Jesse, a boy who has Tourette's Syndrome; 6-year-old twins Shane and Zane who have the congenital condition of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and part-time resource pupils 8-year-old Gwennie, a bright girl whose behavior and verbalizations are described as autistic and 8-year-old Alice, also given to frequent non sequitors interspersed with very poignant comments. This group finally unites after a series of setbacks. Early in the year, fighting broke out contantly among the boys; Venus, too displayed a fair share of aggression whenever she attacked someone who bumped into her. The tension among the pupils was paralleled in Torey Hayden's differing educational approaches with her aide, Julie.Matters reach a critical head when Venus is placed on homebound instruction for 2 months after she severely injures another child. During her absence, the boys team up by forming the poignantly ironic named group, "the Chipmunks" as a way of helping one another and gaining positive reinforcement. When Venus returns, she literally has to start from scratch. A chance encounter with a 1980s comic figure, She-Ra, sparks her curiosity; from there, Venus and teacher Torey Hayden knock down yet another wall. Venus expresses her wishes for a better life and for power and a "magic sword" like She-Ra has; she begins to inch her way into the group.More walls are knocked down; Julie is transferred to another school and an aide named Rosa takes her place. Rosa and Venus bond instantly; the love between them is truly heartwarming. The boys make remarkable strides as well. In one especially touching exchange, Billy tells Jesse how he has overcome his bigotry towards other races because he personally knows Jesse, who is a member of a different race than Billy. Major issues are explored; each child has good insights and heartwarming observations. During such round table discussions, even more walls come tumbling down.As Venus develops more confidence in herself and relies less on She-Ra and her magic sword, she develops friendships in the class. Alice literally takes Venus under her wing and insists on "being best friends" with her. A good placement in a loving, nuturing home after having endured years of abuse and neglect also accelerates the progress Venus makes. I like the way the book provides updates on the progress of each pupil.John Mellencamp's 1983 smash "Crumbling Down" could be the soundtrack of this book along with David Bowie's famous cover of Hunky Dory's 1971 hit "Changes."I can't recommend this one highly enough.

Torey is an inspiration , her ability to connect and help kids is heartwarming. The world needs more people like her and our schools too. I couldn't stop reading once I started and was glad she listed all the children at the end of the story with updates. This is the second book by Torey that I have read. First one was The tigers child , I was hooked after that and now set out to read them all. I did noticed and wonder why only 3 of her books are on Amazon for my Kindle. I hope the rest will be available soon for her kindle reader fans.

This is a perfect book for a kid 14 or 13 years old and younger - it's a fantastic introduction to Muhammad Ali - I just bought it for my friends son - he's 12 - not that familiar with Muhammad Ali - just a basic knowledge of the myth and legend - he knows "Float Like a Butterfly - Sting Like A Bee!"This is a great way to show a youngster that in addition to being the Greatest Of All Time that he was (and is) one of the most influential, courages and important figure of the 1960's and up -It gently shows and explains the race issues of the 60's without overwhelming a child or blasting it in their face - it's very difficult for a kid these days to understand that as little as 40 years ago (which is actually life times to a kid) that if you were black then you had to sit at the back of the bus - or couldn't drink from certain water fountains or had to "know you're place" and how Muhammad Ali shattered that mold - I'm hoping that this actually creates a dialogue with parent and child - anyway - it shows Muhammad as the Champ both in and out of the ring. The book goes over some of the famous fights and rivalry's - from Liston to Frazier - once again I found myself excited about the blow by blows of these fights - no matter how many times I read it I'm just awe struck about the Rumble in the Jungle -I highly recommend this for any child as a great introduction to The Greatest Of All Time - Muhammad Ali!

It is written in plain language, friendly to new readers. It tells about everything related to Ali's boxing career, not so much about before or after (I doubt he did little after retirement). I'm glad to get to know the Greatest Ali through this book. But I feel there is too much repeated information, e.g. about his choice of religion and the decision about not joining the army, etc. They are important. They are what defines Ali. But there is, to me. just too much places talking about the same things over and over.

My teenage son loved this book. A lens in to the world of boxing and how the father of smack-talking catapulted an industry.

Great book, but my son kept complaining about the pages falling out. Literally half the book of pages fell out by the time he finished with it. I guess we won't be donating this book to the library.

it was a gift.

Our 10 year old son is reading it and enjoys learning about the Greatest.

Relatively simple book, but it's a great introduction for someone who is just learning about Ali, or as an intro to a more complete biography.

Good accurate account of his life!

Dragon New Year, the: A Chinese Legend (Chinese Legends Trilogy), by David Bouchard

From Library Journal

Grade 1-4-An original story that explains why the Chinese make noise and explode fireworks to celebrate a new year. The book begins in modern times, with a grandmother telling her granddaughter the reason for the commotion that frightens her on New Year's Eve. In "olden days," she says, people fled their village at the turn of the year, dreading the annual visit of a man-eating dragon named New Year. After watching the creature devour her fisherman son stranded at sea, a grieving old woman refuses to flee the following year. Offering hospitality to a mysterious stranger who turns out to be the Buddha, she is told how to use fire and noise to fend off the dragon. The wordy text is accompanied by large, flamboyant paintings reminiscent of oil works by European old masters, well composed and dramatic, but overpowering. In fact, the narrative seems contrived as a vehicle to showcase the art. An author's note offers brief information on the Buddha, dragons in Chinese folklore, and traditional Chinese New Year customs. Not a first purchase.Margaret A. Chang, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, North Adams Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

The subtitle says this is a legend, but as Bouchard points out in the afterword, he made up the story, staying true to Chinese history and folklore. A small girl is scared of the noise and bright lights of the Dragon Dance in the traditional New Year celebration. Her grandmother comforts her with a story. In the olden days, Grandmother says, everything was dead quiet at New Year as people fled in fear from the ferocious sea dragon. Where the dragon lived at the bottom of the ocean, it was dark and quiet, so the wise Buddha worked out a plan to frighten the dragon with light and loud noise. It's the extra-large pictures that are most dramatic here: pale in color when the people leave the place empty, glowing fiery red as the Buddha creates a firestorm and a bereaved mother makes a thundering uproar to drive away the dragon. Children will enjoy the reversal that the flaming pictures show: it's the fiery, noisy festival that frightens the monster away and keeps the child safe at home. Hazel Rochman

As I said in the title for my review, the artwork alone makes this book stand out! It's absolutely stunning! I can see where your child might be afraid of the Sea Dragon. The Chinese believed that each river or lake had it's own guardian dragon that lived in it's own palaces in the deepest part of that body of water.I think this is a book where the parent will have to read the book prior to reading to their child as well as knowing how their child might react. If you read the inside of the dust jacket it says that there is some truth to this story and some that is made up. I think the author wove both traditional elements of the New Year where there are fireworks, Lion Dancers & Buddah, Sea Dragons, food and family. I think the author used his imagination on how this tradition could have come about! I like this book, but I know my 2 year old daughter and at this time she is not ready to read this book, so if you'd like a book to add to your Chinese home library or about the Chinese New Year this is a nice addition and take a moment to read the book before you read to your child. Then gauge if you think the book will excite their imagination or cause them to be scared. Again, the artwork is just outstanding!

We have read alot of Chinese New Year's books and found this to be the least enjoyable. We were surprised and disappointed to find a quite scary part in the middle. Not unless you read the afterword will you find out that Bouchard made up the story. (I do not think the subtitle should say it is a Chinese legend.) I would recommend that you stay away from this book, and certainly read it well before you consider reading it to any children. I would not want this to be anyone's first or only introduction to Chinese dragons, Chinese New Year's or the Year of the Dragon! If you use this book, do have others on hand and explain that this is just one person's view. (This is an especially strong reaction from me as we read lots of different versions of almost any story we read.)

I agree that this shouldn't be the only book in your library about Chinese New Year. The artwork is vivid and the writing engaging. It is too long and scary for young kids. Probably more for at least 9 or 10 year's old? You'll have to explain that it's someone's version and that they based it on facts but used their imagination. As such, it would be a good tool to show how to do that. I personally liked it, but I'm an adult.
