The volume in your hands is greatly expanded from the first edition, published in 1989. The expansion was undertaken on request by many who have used the book in their courses, and the reason was something of a surprise to me. It seems that this text is occasionally used, not just for a companion volume for the telecourse Ethics in America, but also on its own, as the text for an introductory level history of ethics course. But for that purpose, the selections were incomplete. In the first edition I included only those works which were appealed to, explicitly or implicitly, by the panelists on the various discussions, and that means only works in the Western tradition. Further, only those works were included that had suggestions to make about how to solve ethical problems, to help students follow the actual reasoning of the panelists. Where the panelists' reasoning appealed (usually silently) to an ethical tradition, that tradition was included in the selections and the selections referenced in the Study Guide, the other companion volume. Only works so referenced were included in the Source Reader. Now, that is one very exclusive principle of selection. Omitted were all religious traditions but our own, all Eastern thought of any kind, the entire nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature of doubt and ethical restructuring, and the contemporary movements of feminism, environmentalism, and other forms of multiculturalism (all movements that change the center of ethical consideration). If the text is to be used for a complete course in ethics, surely some selections must at least entertain the possibility of taking these literatures into account. Accordingly, the second edition has expanded, to include selections from Islamic, Buddhist, and Confucian thought (attempts to put the Bhagavad Gita in some form that preserved the poetry were unsuccessful, so Hinduism is not included); also existentialism, feminism, and environmentalism. (A new selection on Fiduciary Duty, taken from the law, has also been added as a complement to the selection from Royce.) All the disclaimers that applied to the first edition still apply: you will get only a taste of these rich and fascinating authors, literature, and movements, the editor makes no claims to expertise on any of these authors in particular and certainly no claims to expertise on them all; you will be frustrated by the minimal selections provided; the only way you can relieve that frustration is by going in each case back to the original source. Got this book for ethics 101 and it actually is amazingly insightful. I sold back my other books but kept this. It allows you to understand the foundation of the United States and our law as government also better think rationally about rights and Liberty. Great historians, would be lawyers or ethics and debate lovers. Even the religious study part was fascinating. Loved the commentary for Christianity and Muslim as it helps understand complex government and political conflicts today stemming from religious rights.

This is an excellent book which contains original writings by important authors, both ancient and modern, on the topic of ethics. This is a companion volume to the videos and the book "Ethics in America: Study Guide." Naturally, anyone with access to a good library could find all these essays and excerpts there. Perhaps, one could find them all online nowadays. However, I found it convenient to have them at-hand in this book.

Came on time, as promised and in good condition as stated in the remarks. Plan to use for a history class.

This book looks new and I am very pleased. The only issue I encountered with this order was It was forwarded to my po box and I had to paid postage due before I could receive it.

I chose three stars as you can tell that it has been used often. I have not read it as my tern has not started yet so can not give further feed back.I am happy with the book as is.

Everyone may know already that this is the book about the 13 year-old surfer who lost her arm because of a shark attack. What they should also know is that this book was meant to be read by people of almost every age starting at 9 or 10 years old. Its language is accessible to fifth, sixth, and seventh graders. I'm actually using it in the classroom, and I have students talking about life lessons that Bethany shares: about being good team players, good losers, patient, and courageous in the face of adversity. In addition, we cover reading comprehension skills, such as main idea, author's purpose, drawing inferences, paragraph types, vocabulary, and grammar skills. Readers also get to know about Bethany's family, which is so important to her strong-willed nature. She goes into great details explaining how her parents and brothers helped develop her courageous character to be able to sustain a quite "tragic" incident. Courage in a 13-year-old child doesn't come out of the blue. Family and faith make the difference. This book is good not only if you plan to use it in the classroom, it's to be read by anyone who wants to find out the true source of courage. No need for self-help books with this one. It's down to earth and her description of family life and community life gives us the basics for overcoming obstacles and being successful - no quick gimmicks here. It's well written. The vocabulary and sentence structure of the book are appropriate for middle school students. Highly recommended.

My daughter needed a biography for a 6th grade project. It was tricky finding a biography that was advanced enough yet still appropriate. This was a great compromise. It’s clean and inspiring and a real book that took her a couple of weeks to get through just reading at night.

Godly without preachy. Wholesome family feeling that you can feel. Down to earth storytelling like she was your best friend that you grew up with. Inspiring, sweet & funny. Wish I could meet her & her family. Takes you through the gammit of before during & after. Very interesting read.

Great story about a girl who lost her arm, because it got bitten by a shark. However, she never gives up on hope and in God, which is pretty impressive to me, because most likely teenagers would blame God for anything happens that they don't like.

This is of course several years old and it’s geared for young readers but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Bethany discusses the incident of the shark attack, her hospital stay and how it’s affected her life and surfing. She has a lot of faith which is what got her through as well as the support of her family and friends. Much respect to this young woman. A good, quick and interesting read.

This is better than I expected. The devotions are encouraging and inspirational. My daughter is a swimmer and several of the mentions of surfing can apply to any sport. I think this book would be good for any teen/tween girls, but is especially meaningful to athletes.

I was looking for an appropriate biography for my 6th grade daughter's book report assignment when I came across this book. She really enjoyed it and it was definitely age appropriate. The story was inspiring and entertaining. My daughter isn't a big fan of reading to begin with, but she really enjoyed this book.

Bethany is an inspiration to all! I'm glad I got this book and not the original. In this book she goes behind the scenes of her movie "Soul Surfer". At the end of the book she keeps a journal of the whole movie experience. From picking out the actors to the day the movie was released. It's so awesome to see whole process! I love how she was so open about her faith and just laid it out black and white, plain and simple. Even while filming the movie she would constantly tell the director(Sean McNamara) to keep her faith as the main focus of the movie. Not only did she want to be a inspiration to the world but she wanted to do it through Jesus Christ. This is a book for all ages. Even if she wrote this as a teenager she has the maturity and wisdom that goes way beyond that. I'm 22 years old and I found this book so compelling. I could not put it down! I to am a Christian and in this world we live in it so easy for girls to sell themselves out, especially being in Hollywood. Bethany said in her book that she wants to continue to stay humble and be a good example to young girls out there, even after being famous. How cool is that! Not only has this surfer shown how talented and ambitious she is but, she got to show the world that with Jesus all things are possible! Thanks Bethany! :)

This was a good book to read, I enjoyed hearing her story and how she made it through the experience and grew from it. Some of it was very obviously written by a very young author, but if she's telling in her own words then that's how it should be.

I had no sewing or embroidery skills before starting this so I picked this book and a little kit they sell here on Amazon.With that being said, this book is NOT for absolute beginners like myself.ProsIt's a very short book, it took maybe 15 minutes to read the whole thing.Lots of diagramsBig pages so you can see the diagramsConsI was very confused reading this book. This is more of a reference guide than a step-by-step guide. Ms. Gerlings doesn't give a lot of instruction. She just states what something is and that's it. No context at least not for someone who knows nothing.I would say if you are a complete beginner, look elsewhere. After reading this I went to YouTube. Hopefully this book will be useful in the future.

When I order a book for beginners, I expect that the content will be organized in such a way that if I've never had any experience with embroidery at all, I will gain an understanding of the basic concepts, tools, and simple projects to practice.The writing and layout, and lack of clear and complete definitions and explanations, almost makes me think this book was translated into English from another language. Or at the very least, comes through a very lazy editor/publisher, who never had anyone actually read through this first.The stitches and corresponding directions seemed incomplete, and unclear, and the projects provided seem complex for a beginner.

I was excited to get this book then when I read through It, it really wasn't was I was expecting. It's not simple and basic for beginners and somewhat confusing. The patterns look advanced and really don't understand how you are supposed to stitch them. The first part of the book explains the different types of stitching, and the basics well, but as for simple embroidery pieces, I wouldn't recommend this. Your better off just looking online for a how to. The fist part of the book is fine, the rest is a complete waste of time in my opinion and for the price of this book, it really should be larger than pages of a magazine.

The cover was beautiful ! Instructions inside gave no pattern or idea on how to recreate it. Small book! Not much in it to warrent recommendation for anyone to order. I would send it back if the postage was worth it.

This is not what I expected. I thought it would be more teaching of the stitches. It is confusing and difficult to follow. This is not for a beginner but perhaps a refresher for someone going back to embroidary.

Before this book I thought I knew all the stiches in the world but less than a minute through the book I realised that I’m so ignorant. I love this book and I intend to buy 4 more copies to give to my close friends. I am so happy I bought it.

This is not as detailed as I would have wanted for a beginner, however if you've done some needle work before, it's great.

I do not like this book, does not explain how to do hand embroidery so I can learn the stitches. I d o not re c on end for beg like me.

This is the text of Spurgeon's work "All of Grace," so the content is great. The formatting however is virtually non-existent. There are some bold or italic lines, however the line, page, and paragraph breaks are in all of the wrong places, and there are no page numbers. This was clearly a "copy and paste" of text from some other digital source, so I would not recommend it for a gift or as a nice 'personal library' book, but it is inexpensive enough that it works fine as a study tool for just reviewing the content, which has tremendous value. I'll probably find a nice copy at some point for my library, but will use this one for study for the time being (since it's a copy I don't mind marking up).

Nothing wrong with Spurgeon's book, but the formatting in this particular edition makes it basically unreadable. It's a Word document that has formatting errors on literally every page, with paragraphs broken up incorrectly, page numbers scattered throughout the pages, and sentences that don't follow from one line to the next. I tried to save a few bucks by getting this one... don't make that mistake. Pay the extra $3-5 and get one from a reputable publisher.

Best literature ever written second to the Bible in regards to man finding freedom through salvation. I've personally read this book numerous times as well as purchased multiple copies for many people through the years. People on their death-beds, prisoners, family, friends and strangers. I have been a student if the scriptures for years and have personally read the bible more than 30 times cover to cover in my lifetime and this book All of Grace is the single greatest compliment to scripture I have ever come across in regards to spiritual freedom. A must read for everyone who does not know what true freedom in Christ is all about. If you're ready to part ways with legalistic bondage and feelings of not being good enough then this book is a must for you. Enjoy!

Reading this is like sitting down with Spurgeon for a conversation about grace. He writes in first person walking the reader through the facets of a faith full, works free, grace saturated understanding of what it means to be saved and kept by grace.A helpful read for those who want to understand biblical Christianity or those already Christians.

This is a review for the print not the book. The printing of this book is off. It's all jumbled and not in the correct order. Some sort of printing error

No one has ever matched Charles H. Spurgeon with the grasp of the English language. This great English preacher will never be matched for taking that which is profound and making it simple. He had the ability to take the most valuable of concepts and put tem on the low shelf where from the most simple to the most intellectual, all could bring something with them that would satisfy a need.

About the Author

Paula Barnes and Mary Ellen Robison met more than 15 years ago when they both moved to the same street in Katy, Texas. Paula taught quilting classes at the local quilt shop and Mary Ellen was the devoted student. They quickly formed a friendship that went beyond their love of quilting and reproduction fabric to become Red Crinoline Quilts.Paula began quilting in 1989 after moving to Dallas, Texas. Not knowing anyone, she decided to take her six-month old daughter to the Dallas Quilt Show. Three days later, she was hooked. After discovering that hand piecing wasn't her thing, Paula visited a notions counter and purchased the tools she would need to cut out and piece her quilt tops. Once she completed her fourth top, she was asked to teach a class at a local quilt store. Her husband encouraged her to give it a shot and the rest, as they say, is history. Paula taught in the Dallas/Fort Worth area for more than 25 years, and now teaches at shops and quilt guilds throughout the US.Paula Barnes and Mary Ellen Robison met more than 15 years ago when they both moved to the same street in Katy, Texas. It takes a book like Tributes and Treasures to remind us that variability and originality have an important role in modern-day quilts based on 1800s tradition. Paula Barnes, as designer, and Mary Ellen Robison, as piecer, have produced a lovely book that proves uniqueness can still be wrought from these common elements: settings, sashings, borders, and alternate blocks. Add in some organized scrappiness, and you can appreciate why some of us will never tire of the repro genre.There's nothing too tricky here, as for technique. Consequently, beginners won't have to skip over many of these 12 projects.All but 1 of the projects use diagonal settings. And that one, the 81.5" x 99.5" pink and brown "Cabin Creek", is a straight set that fools the eye by appearing diagonally set. All are quite large, which is unusual for a quilt book. The smallest side dimension is 68 inches, while the largest side is 107.5 inches. Thus, as shown, all would be considered bed-worthy more than lap- or wall-sized.About 1/2 the projects use sashings, both pieced and not. "Kennesaw Mountain", at 92.5 inches square, is another eye-fooler with its multitude of flying geese that sure look like sashing ... but they're not. (But they could be, with a bit of reconfiguring.)All of the 12 projects are predominated by one particular block which gets repeated as needed. Alternate blocks appear occasionally, either within the body or nicely placed along the perimeter. "Oak Alley", at 78" x 78", is composed of 13 tree blocks. Much more stick-to-it-iveness will be needed for the 2 quilts that both have 85 blocks. One is "Hill Country Baskets", at 96" x 96", which requires 196 sashings strips for its 85 identical blocks. The 2nd is the quilt shown on the cover - "Antique Star". It uses only 1/2 the sashings strips because it does not use corner posts. Consequently, some of those strips are quite lengthy and might be awkward for some to handle. Compounding the trickiness is the optional use of fussy cutting all those sashings.Each quilt can be downsized easily by reducing the number of blocks. Since all the quilts involve a lot of repetition (but to nice effect), this might be good to know. Each also is introduced with a bit of history.If I were forced, say, with fabric withholding, to express something less than positive about Tributes and Treasures, it would be that alternate colorways are not provided. But that's a real stretch. Now, please, don't take away any of my 1800s repros. I'll be needing them soon, very soon ...

Beautiful photos of some wonderful quilts. Nice selection of patterns so there is something for every skill level. Instructions appear to be well written. Am going to make a quilt from this book this winter...

This was a hard one to read. A bloody hard slog. If I see the word 'disruption' one more time I'm going to throw up.There is valuable insight in the first half of the book which I recommend. It opens your mind to what could be, and suddenly nothing seems as safe and cosy.If you are a businessman, you'll need a lot more than what this book has to offer. You'll probably look at the entrenched systems of health, throw your hands in the air and decide to tackle some other industry.

For anyone looking to understand the healthcare system to a greater degree, and especially the current problems with how our system functions, this book will do a fantastic job at getting to the heart of the problem without getting too bogged down in extraneous details. Even more importantly, this book states explicit actions that need to be taken to make our system more streamlined, more accessible, and overall, how to improve quality while decreasing cost. For those who don't have a firm grasp on business models and economics, the authors provide excellent examples and analogies to make complicated ideas clear. I suggest this book for anyone wishing to have a clear grasp of our current problems in healthcare and/or for anyone wishing to understand the direction healthcare will take in this country.

As a 23-year healthcare industry veteran and the author of [...], I thought the authors did an excellence job of identifying many of the critical issues facing healthcare and providing a roadmap for change. The problems with our healthcare system are complex and have many root causes. The authors provide insights on how three elements of disruptive innovation can make healthcare more accessible and affordable. These three elements are:1. Technology enablers2. Business model innovation3. Value networksAnyone who has worked in healthcare realizes that the regulatory framework and reimbursement scheme often drives much of the behaviors and constraints that adversely impact access and affordability. The authors do a nice job of discussing the regulatory and reimbursement reforms needed to enable disruptive solutions for healthcare. In full disclosure, I'm a fan of Mr. Christensen. I've read many of his books and have seen him speak a number of times. This book is an excellent contribution to helping solve our healthcare crisis.

It is a commonplace that the U.S. healthcare system is broken, but the discussion often degenerates into a debate about who is responsible. This book takes a different approach, focusing on what is wrong with the healthcare system and needs to change so it can work better.The proposed solution is to discard the current fee for healthcare service model, in which healthcare providers are systematically paid to treat illness without recompense for fostering welfare, and create a three-track system:(1) Fee for service would continue to apply to diagnostic services, where - due to the nature of the patient's condition and the state of medical knowledge - there is a high need for intuitive investigation versus results-based treatment for conditions that are well understood. (The process described brings to mind episodes of House, a TV show in which a brilliant but irascible doctor challenges a team of colleagues to find the problem before the patient dies.)(2) Fee for result would apply for treating conditions that are well understood and have a clearly defined solution -- colonoscopies, laser eye surgery, implantation of stents, etc.(3) User networks for patients with chronic conditions/ unhealthy practices to learn how they can help themselves and be motivated to do so.As is pointed out again and again, disruptive changes will be needed to get from A to B. Thus, hospitals must be redirected to focus on diagnostic services and cede provision of standardized care and wellness coordination to specialized clinics and other agencies. Primary care physicians (the traditional "family doctor") should concentrate on diagnostic services at a lower level rather than acting as "gatekeepers" for referrals to specialists. Enabling changes in reimbursement rules, health insurance arrangements, and medical record keeping are spelled out in detail.When the dust settles, there will be fewer hospitals (with the survivors focused on enhanced diagnosis, like the Mayo Clinic), fewer medical specialists (who currently operate in narrow niches, often without a full grasp of a patient's situation), more primary care physicians and nurses with augmented responsibilities, a new model for pharmaceutical companies that focuses on targeted medications for precisely defined conditions versus the development and marketing of "blockbuster" drugs that only help a fraction of the users and require enormously expensive mass clinical trials, and a lot of medical work performed by less highly trained personnel with better diagnostic tools.Andy Kessler presented an analogous vision in "The End of Medicine: How Silicon Valley (and Naked Mice) Will Reboot Your Doctor," Harper Collins (2006). His book is very entertaining, but this one covers the ground in a more disciplined and comprehensive manner. I would recommend "The Innovator's Prescription" for anyone who is seriously concerned about the current healthcare system.Doctors, hospitals, and other healthcare providers cannot make the needed changes on their own, because they do not control all the levers. Having the government take the lead is said to be problematic, for reasons that are dispassionately stated and I happen to agree with. The authors suggest that the best candidate entities for leading the transition to healthcare in the new mode might be employers that profit from the good health of their employees. Then there is the intriguing possibility of expanding the role of integrated healthcare providers,e.g., Kaiser Permanente.Let's hope our country chooses the right path.

Good buy, especially for Stonetown. Sparse on activities outside of Stonetown and spice tours. If you are doing both Serengeti and/or Kilimanjaro with Zanzibar, don't bother to purchase a general Tanzania guide. Rely on this Zanzibar guide and particular guides for Serengeti, Kilimanjaro.

I used this guide as well as the Lonely Planet Tanzania one 6 months ago for my trip. I was in Zanzibar for only a week. I found it hard to use and ended up using only the LP Tanzania guide because it had enough information for my short stay.If you're just going to Zanzibar and staying longer than 2 weeks, then it may be more useful. However, if you have less than two weeks on Zanzibar, this book is too overwhelming. If you're traveling on a budget like me, just get a Tanzania guidebook that has Zanzibar in it. This book added bulk to my luggage and contains a lot of information that will waste time to go through. You can use it to read about the island before you go though.

Very detailed, and information on places to stay was accurate and up to date for the edition. Gives great information on things and places that may otherwise have been missed.

As an experienced traveler I can say that it is essential to have a good, reliable guide, to any African destination because you can spend a lot of time and money trying to figure out your travel details by yourself. Making your own arrangements can be challenging but it is really worth the effort because you get to see things and meet people that you might not be able to in a group--you really do need some kind of guide book to make this work and this one does a great job.

If you are considering going to Zanzibar, planning a trip, or already there, this book is a must read.The book is comprehensive but well organized so you can skip to the parts that are relevant to you.The authors clearly know what they are talking about, whether it is where to eat out in Stone Town, or the best places to find beaches and view the wildlife.The photos are colorful and engaging, and really convey the flavor of Zanzibar, not just foods and spices but also the people and the natural beauty, not to mention the amazing wildlife and sea life.Without being preachy, the book enlightens readers about some of the recent challenges with tourism development on the islands. It gives guidance to those of us who want to travel responsibly, and points readers to some of the best locally owned and operated companies.I was pleased to see that the book mentions one of the local tour groups that my husband and I visited in Zanzibar (Eco & Culture Tours), and other groups that go beyond the standard spice tours and provide a deeper understanding of the culture, economy, and environment. These types of resources make this Zanzibar Bradt Travel Guide really stand out among travel guides.I also enjoyed the details of the history section, with easy to read text boxes on Zanzibar's colorful and sometimes thorny past. I especially loved learning about Princess Sayyida Salme, the author of Memoirs of an Arabian Princess from Zanzibar.This book is the one to get -- well written, sensitive, packed with helpful tips, and insightful about how you can really get to know and enjoy Zanzibar, even if you only have a few days there.I also recommend it as a research guide for folks studying responsible tourism -- even if they don't plan to go to Zanzibar.

Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia by Chris and Susan McIntyre is the guidebook we chose for our recent trip to Zanzibar Island, off the coast of Tanzania in East Africa. This Brandt guidebook tells it all and was very helpful in planning our trip. We checked the recommendations for places to stay and eat and found them always to be right. The book guided us on what health precautions to take, which sites were most important to see, and how to just relax and enjoy this island in the Indian Ocean. This book has all the information you could need while planning or while visiting there. Be sure to take it with you.

I love this book. Its got just enough really interesting history and cultural facts, written in a very readable way. The kind of book you can actually read when you have run out of novels whilst lying on a beach. Most of the write ups for the places we visited were spot on. Really helpful book.
