About the Author

'D Day Through German Eyes' presents the transcripts of interviews which my grandfather carried out with German veterans in 1954, on the tenth anniversary of D Day. These were German soldiers, engineers and Luftwaffe men who had experienced the opening hours of the Normandy beach landings, and they were able to recall those cataclysmic events in detail. My grandfather had been a German propaganda journalist in 1944, and had visited the Atlantic Wall under construction. He was also a veteran of the German Army in World War One, and so his background enabled him to build a strong rapport with the interviewees, many of whom had not spoken of their experiences even with their own families. The result is a series of interviews which reveal not only the desperate reactions of German soldiers to the Allied onslaught, but also the surprising mix of motivations which drove them.

As a longtime travel journalist, and someone who was born in London back in the days when Great Britain was fighting for her life (WW2!) and because I've always been, well, "mesmerized" by various aspects of the Nazi "military machine," I found this unique, intriguing, fascinating book totally awesome. I have countless books about WW2, and almost 98% of them are written from the British, American and Canadian point of view. Few are written about the German/Nazi view. To have a book like this in one's collection is a goldmine. The fact that these ARE first hand, unvarnished words from soldiers who were ACTUALLY there, is priceless. A cliché phrase for sure, but this riveting book is a "page turner." I read it cover to cover in 3 days. As it encompasses mostly the events in Normandy, it was for me as mesmerizing as a flickering neon sign, because as a journalist I've been to Normandy 5 times. There's another aspect to this brilliant book that makes it even more compelling - the words and thoughts comes from military men TEN years AFTER the event. Why is that important? Well, it gives the person relating his experiences, 10 years to think about and in many cases VIVIDLY remember, how awful, terrible and beyond comprehension, the fight was. How "mentally disturbing" it is to come face-to-face with the enemy, and know it is either you or him. Even if you are not interested in WW2, and even if you don't like the German military of that era, this is still a "Must Buy" book as it provides an absolutely fascinating insight into how human beings face being in combat. I wish there were many more books like this. My photo shows French schoolchildren visiting the famous Pointe du Hoc - June, 2004

This was obviously a fake memoir. Read the entire thing and it really popped out. Issues were:1) Almost graphic level of wound description, real vets do not write like that.2) Same voice used throughout the book. It was the work of one author alone, not 10 year old recollections as described.3) Does not read like translated German text. From the grammar and style it reads like it was written in English.4) use of terms/phrases not common to 1940s or 1950s speech, very much post 2000 phases.5) advertisement of the last Panther book, another obvious fake in the book. Supposedly different publishers.6) Unit appearing at the beaches/behind the beaches that were not there by official unit histories.7) A misunderstanding of German doctrine that was obvious in the focus on machine gun fire and absolute lack of any discussion of rifle use. The Germans were one of the more rifle centric infantry forces in WWII, the author seems to have formed his view of static Infantry fighting form watching the 1960s combat series.8) lack of any corresponding German text publishing history.I was taken by this fake, be aware there are increasing volumes published recently like this.

Like my 2 brothers and our dad, we're all vets. (Dad, WWII). I bought this for my West Point younger brother. He loved it and sent to me. This was fantastic. What a totally different perspective on the Normandy landing. Splendid job by the grandson of the man who took original notes. Some points were interesting, like many of the German soldiers thought the French citizenship was pro-German. They seem to forget that they invaded France in the first place. But then again, what do I know. I do think I'd have 'known' better if I asked my Dad more questions about the war. He was in all the fronts, to include D-Day. He told me some, that his duck (landing craft) was hit. I asked him what he did. He responded, very matter of fact that they switched ducks. He told me a little more, but I sincerely regret not asking him 1000 other questions. Dad died in 2006. He finished up as a 1st Sgt ... pretty impressive. He's in books for firing the first mortars on the landing.Oh - this book: It's a fantastic read from beginning to end. You should not be disappointed.

Fascinating first-person accounts of D-Day by German soldiers at each of the landing beaches. Anyone who is interested in World War II, military history, or related topics should love this book. In addition to recounting their personal experiences, the soldiers who were interviewed for this project inject many interesting opinions about the war, their "cause", the concept of a United Europe, and the perspective that the Allies were "the invaders" (interloping into a happily peaceful France). It gives very novel insights into the motivations of the soldiers, as well as their hair-raising experiences. Although I've read uncounted numbers of books about WWII, along with many memoirs of both Allied and Axis soldiers, this book provided information and insights that I had never encountered previously. It's also a collection of very fascinating stories -- accounts of how these soldiers in the maelstrom of D-Day managed to survive while most of their companions died. As a somewhat jaded reader of WWII memoirs (etc.), I couldn't put this one down. It's truly exceptional.
