Photojournalism probably wouldn't have exploded into public consciousness as it did had Henry Luce not given Time and Fortune a sibling, the pictorial weekly Life. The November 23, 1936, first issue contained a sterling example (well sampled herein) by Margaret Bourke-White of what would become a Life staple, the photo-essay. The magazine really caught on when World War II began. At its 1940s-early 1960s acme, Life may have been read by one-third of all American households; the distinction of its photos ensured that many more would see its wares reproduced in books, exhibitions, and other media. This survey cherry-picks Life's seven decades for chapters on the presidency, the photo-essay, Hollywood, war, science and nature, sports, "Our Culture, Our World," and people having fun. If many of the photographers' names are famous, several of the pictures are so well known that they have become icons of their times and events, such as "The Picture" (sailor kisses girl in Times Square on V-J Day). Pictures speak. Great pictures send our minds back to the times and events that are now almost forgotten. For a person my age, this book brings back memories. For the young, this book will introduce times not known and perhaps kindle interest in recent history. Knowing history is important. If we are smart, we allow history to teach. We need to learn something.

The pictures are great and very interesting to be allowed to see how history can be appreciated...I made the purchase for Christmas gifts...My brother-in-law served in the Marine Corps and fought inViet Nam. There was a picture of him in this magazine...A three cheers and high five for all vets...
We gave this to my father at a group party at the assisted living apartments. Over 100 people, old, young, in between, they all wanted to take a peek at the book. He has a collection of Life magazines and books, and they are all worth of keeping and sharing, as is this one.
This book is absolutly amazing, there are pictures that took me by surprise, they were cold, to the point, children dying, emaciated etc., Yes thru this there are also many beautiful, graceful pictures ... I was surprised how far back they went,I really appreciated the descrfiptions of the pictures to be direct, to the point!!! I would highly, highly recommend this book if you want to see life as it was / is through pictures!!! You won't be able to put it down, I guarantee it!!! B. Anne Snider
