I can think of no circumstance a worship leader may find himself in which he should not read this book. It is the best on the topic of which I am aware, combining into one well written, heart-shepherding book all of the good things that before you would have had to read a dozen separate books to find. The book is both practical and theological, realistic and idealistic. It is God-centered, God-exalting and man-minimizing, while realizing that man must play a role. I have only rarely seen a book that so skillfully and thoughtfully combines rich doctrine and practical advice.For the band member: Must read. The book is not only about how to lead those who perform, but about what the goal of the music portion of the worship service must be. The book will help you evaluate and redirect your heart in what you may have grown comfortable with. Maybe youFor the pastor/elder: Must read. Know how to encourage, direct, and come alongside your worship leader. I would recommend that the worship leader, band, and pastor(s) read this book together. The book so accurately describes the Biblical vision for worship that all who are involved in how a Sunday service, smallgroup gathering, or other meeting unfold should do so in light of the thoughtful, biblically informed direction Bob Kauflin lays out. There is even a chapter specifically for non-music-oriented pastors.For the church member: Should read. I do not lead worship; I can't even sing on pitch, but what I was gained from the book made an immediate and palpable difference in the entirety of my worship (singing, participating in the Lord's Supper, listening to the sermon, and interacting with others) on Sunday. There are certainly other books that can benefit you in this regard, but this book is certainly one that can benefit all members of the body of Christ. The book finishes with a chapter written specifically for the pastor(s) of the church.I cannot sum up my thoughts any better than D.A. Carson did in his endorsement: "Here is a rare book: a practical treatment of corporate worship that nevertheless reflects deep theological commitments. One may disagree here and there with some of the judgments, but it is demonstrably unfair to imagine that Bob Kauflin has not through about these matters deeply." Bob's life and ministry at sovereign grace have demonstrated that he is a worship leader and pastor from whom we want to learn. C.J. Mahaney writes, "I know of no man more qualified to write this book than Bob. And I know of no more important, useful work for those who would lead God's people than Worship Matters." I agree.
Worship Matters by Bob Kauflin is a great read on the subject of worship. In the book, Kauflin covers not just why we worship, and not just on the biblical perspectives of worship, but also on the nuts and bolts of how worship leaders can lead more effectively, how we can keep ourselves grounded and avoid some of the pitfalls common to those who lead in the church, and finally, how we can be better staff members and support for our pastors. The book is loaded with not only helpful tips, but truly deep insights that could only come from someone who has pursued worship as a lifestyle.I love that Kauflin never tries to parade superiority or overconfidence over the reader, but instead teaches through the examples of his own mistakes through his many years as a worship leader and pastor. This book will benefit not only the new worship leader, but anyone who is serious about being part of a biblical, God-centered ministry. With Worship Matters, Kauflin has given the church a book that is worthy of not just reading, but of reading over and over again. Exceptional.
Only read the first 5 chapters so far, and it's already one of the favorite worship leading books I know. It's direct, very honest to my experience, and Bob sprinkles in some humor too. I lead praise for my church for the past several years and I find this book insightful with many quotable phrases which I share regularly with my band.Just love the theological view of worship and how he personal reconciled the balance of music style, how to lead and train, and most important, one's personal worship to God. Highly recommend it for young and old praise leaders alike.
Kauflin's sheer honesty in providing personal examples from circumstances like conflict resolution, song selection, and an attitude of holiness make this book a practical must for anyone leading music that glorifies Christ. Each chapter is conveniently devoted to one simple topic and is a quick study for very real encounters that any worship leader has, is or will experience at one point if he/she is seeking excellence in their role. It's highly thorough, but not monotonous and tedious. Kauflin expresses a great deal of personal opinion, but it only makes this book more endearing because it displays a true passion to see music leaders in the church and outside function at their best. I recommend this as a regular reading for all worship leaders, I myself will be making it an annual reading!
I am a worship leader here in Pittsburgh. When the whole Praise and Worship hit my church's denomination my pastor chose me to start doing it. He knew I had a voice and liked singing and pretty much through me up there. At the time it was what we called devotion/testimony service. Then it lead to praise and worship. Well I WAS NEVER TAUGHT ANYTHING!!! (Smile :-) I learned from hit and miss (and booooooooooy there were a lot of misses). I too started going through a tug-of-war in my heart about God's glory and was rebuked heavily by my Pastor and was introduced to Tasha Cobbs conference call where I heard this man of GOD teach and she promoted this book. THIS BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE! I am now teaching my leaders under me to focus more on GOD. I believe I NOW KNOW what to say to the musicians. I just see things in such a greater light. I am so thankful that JESUS HAS ALLOWED ME TO GO INTO THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD AND I DON'T HAVE TO FIGHT OR CONJURE ANYTHING UP TO GET THERE!!! (Screaming!!!!).
