This remarkable book could have been three distinct and absorbing works: an autobiography, a history of Celtic heroines, both mythical and real, and a persuasive plea for women to lead mankind in adopting a way of life that will preserve the earth for generations to come. Sharon Blackie seamlessly interweaves the three to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts.She was born and raised in England’s bleak industrial northeast where I had my first job as a professional chemist in the 1960s and experienced pollution first hand. Drapes disintegrated after a year. The river Tees was acidic, greenish-brown, and iron laden from my employer’s process to make, ironically, whiter than white titanium dioxide.Blackie describes her difficult working class childhood there, her abusive father who left when she was three and her alcoholic mother, in few words but with heartbreaking dispassion. She rose from this to a PhD in neuroscience, and employment with a major international tobacco company, which is how I came to know her almost thirty years ago. She worked at both its English and American headquarters. Living, as she has subsequently, restoring and running a croft in Ullapool in northwest Scotland, then, when that town became gentrified, battling the gales and hard manual labor on another croft on the stormy side of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, are a far cry from the comforts of a regular salary and first-class travel. After four years there, she and her second husband David, a former RAF Tornado pilot who breaks all stereotypes one might expect, gave up the struggle of running their large croft, and moved to the tranquility of Donegal in the northwest of Ireland. Through the crofting years she and David, who I have not met, also founded and managed Two Ravens press and published EarthLines magazine.As an Anglo Saxon male in his mid-seventies I was unlikely to pick up a book on Celtic heroines. I am glad they provide the core of If Women Rose Rooted for the lessons their lives provide. For these alone I would recommend that my contemporaries both read and purchase it for their daughters, granddaughters, nieces and great-nieces. Blackie uses these heroines, and what some of the few current surviving native peoples do in their cultures, as exemplars for what she encourages women around the world to do, even if living in our increasingly unlivable environment which, after Eliot, she names The Wasteland.Transformative power, and women’s role in developing it to halt degeneration of our fragile environment is Blackie’s third and major theme: “Once upon a time, the people of our Celtic nations knew what the indigenous peoples of other lands knew: that our fate is inseparable from the fate of the lands we live on, and the fate of wider Earth”. “Women are spinners and weavers….Once we knew the patterns for weaving the world; we can piece them together again. Women can heal the Wasteland. This is what women do. This is our work.”While Blackie puts much of the blame for the Wasteland on the west’s Judeo-Christian heritage and its support over the centuries for male domination in our society I am not convinced that this is the whole story. I am not scholar enough to argue with her, but do note, that male domination exists, with few exceptions, in most human societies, regardless of religion (spiritual path) or lack thereof. Even the Buddha, who with Jesus is one of two men I admire the most, has yet to see a female Dalai Lama. Hinduism may come closest to accepting female spiritual leadership with Ammaji, the hugging guru, and the currently best known, in the USA. It was the Bhagavad-Gita that Eliot, the Anglo-catholic, explores in the Waste Land. I believe he would have enjoyed Sally Kempton’s Awakening Shakti: The Transformative Power of the Goddesses of Yoga.My intent with this minor criticism is not to detract from Blackie’s call to arms. For all I know my remaining male chauvinism may be part of my genetic code, not my Judaeo-Christian upbringing, but that is irrelevant. Society needs to change its values for earth to return to Blake's green and pleasant land. Blackie herself is an eloquent exemplar as are many other women she describes of how we must change. May their numbers grow exponentially and may we men join and support them.Lance Reynolds

This book was so fantastic I could hardly put it down. I thoroughly enjoyed how it was a form of memoir wrapped in how to view culture, myths, and legends, and their connection to the land, in new ways.Initially, I thought it was going to be about women's *spirituality,* but it's not -- in fact, the categories on the back are listed as self-development, feminism, and environment. Once I shifted my perspective, some of her comments made a lot more sense to me. This is an excellent example, and reminder to myself, of how we can easily become prey to our own situation and context as an overlay upon someone else’s and then become puzzled at the contradictions. Blackie seems to view the Celtic myths, stories, and legends as a way to relate psychologically and physically — not spiritually per se — to the land.

Scotch-Irish Blackie was born in England and has lived mostly in Scotland and Ireland. She offers the Celtic traditional stories of “first things,” which “honor Women as the creators of life, the bearers of the Cup of knowledge and wisdom, personifying the moral and spiritual authority of this fertile green and blue Earth” – and great stories they are. She mixes her personal story and poetry with the old stories. Here is how she states her understanding. “The sense of belonging to the world that those of us in these Western lands once had, that sense of deep rooting in the Earth, is all but dead. The patriarchy crippled it; Modernity dealt it the final blow. As a woman, I want to make it live again. We belong to each other, this land and I. The Eco-Heroine’s Journey is a journey back to a solid rooting in the land where we live and the traditions of our native places.” Her advice to older women: Pass your wisdom on. Tell your own story. Your truth shatters hypocrisy. When necessary, become fierce. Be wrathful.

I found this book to be illuminating, heartening and empowering. Among its many gifts, it names the work that must be done: the sacred task of bringing the world into balance. Strong women are essential to this; nothing else makes any sense. So it is that women must reclaim their power and sovereignty. This is no small task, but the book clears away the brush to reveal how the path unfolds, how our struggles can actually be doorways, and how we can find great sustenance in Nature. Many of us have already be have been walking this path, perhaps without full awareness. With this book comes a click of recognition: Now I see who I truly am and I know what I must do.

I’m not sure how to rate this book. It appeared to me at once a biographical about the depressing early years of an independent Zimbabwe; on the other hand, it devolved into a most personal autobiography. I am torn.I lived in Rhodesia from 1962 through 1969 with a year in Zambia sandwiched in between. I was not raised in Rhodesia but did spend nearly six of my formative years in Tanganyika. Before moving to Rhodesia as a young man I did a six months’ stint in Blantyre, Malawi, staying at Ryalls Hotel (not Riley’s as misprinted,) and have mixed feelings.From a literary perspective, Godwin’s writing style is creative, exotic and stimulating although the ‘stimulating’ part, which tends negative, was a bit much for me having lived in the country in happier times. Coming events however, were indeed casting their shadows before them in the 60s. So, I harbor little doubt that the impression he leaves is accurate. I made a flying visit to Harare, (Salisbury) in 1985 and saw the downhill trend with my own eyes. A former Shona servant of mine whom I contacted bemoaned the terrible situation and avowed how much better life had been under white rule. And Mugabe was just getting started.If you knew Rhodesia, reading this book will leave you impressed and distressed. If you didn’t, you may regard the story with a more objective eye although it’s hard to believe anyone could be objective about this international disgrace.Well worth the read if you can handle it.The Slope of Kongwa Hill: A Boy's Tale of Africa

"When a Crocodile Eats the Sun" is a magnificent memoir. It is, in my mind, the best book I have read for some years. At varying times, it can be tragic, uplifting, sad and captivating. I simply devoured it over a handful of days.Peter Godwin was born in Rhodesia, a country to which his parents emigrated after the Second World War. His mother was a doctor and his father an engineer. They were seeking a fresh start in Africa. Their hopes would have been boundless.Godwin's memoir covers the period from 1996 until 2004. It is a period in which his father's health is progressively declining and ultimately leads to his death. This decline is a metaphor for the tragedy that is modern Zimbabwe. From having been part of the nation's educated elite, Godwin's family is slowly reduced to penury. The nation is ruled by an authoritarian kleptocrat, Robert Mugabe. Single handedly, this man has run Zimbabwe down from a relatively prosperous nation with good prospects to being a beggar. One can only hope that history treats this man with the contempt that is his due.Godwin tells the story of the nation's decline through the eyes of a foreigner who now only visits the country periodically. He has moved to New York where he is a writer. On each trip home he sees a nation one step closer to anarchy. This in itself is a sad tale but when seen against the backdrop of his own father's failing health, the tale is especially tragic.Intertwined with the larger picture is a slowly revealing portrait of his father's background which had been kept secret from his children. This too is a sad story. Some people are truly dogged by the misfortunes of when and where they were born. This is certainly true for Godwin senior.I will say no more. Arguably, I have revealed too much already. However, I do thoroughly recommend this book. It is a masterpiece of compelling literature.

A great read about important events and times. A really enlightening tale which examined generally known happenings in a very detailed and shocking context. The human factors in the story were so very well done and the sense of dismay and waste palpable.Not only was the history of racial conflict and colonisation done well but also the analysis of the effects upon and reactions of, the protagonists was outstanding and set many aspects into a widely universal experience of endurance, suffering, loyalty and resistance to the point of ultimate loss.

I started reading about Mugabe and his genocidal aggression against white farmers years ago and wondered when this monster would get his just desserts. Surely it would be soon, I thought. As time went on I was amazed that nothing was being done about this disturbing situation. I just finished Peter Godwin's wonderful book "When a Crocodile Eats the Sun". It's one of those books that you only stop reading when you can't keep your eyes open any longer and the next day you are anxious to get back to it. To recap all the wonderful things in this beautifully written, yet heartbreaking memoir would take too much space of this little dialog box. Let me just say that if you want a second opinion of this book, yes! Order it. It truly encompasses so much - the good (his parents and certain black Africans) the bad (Mugabe, his henchmen and the teenage thugs terrorizing the white farmers), and the ugly (poverty and chaos caused by Mugabe's incredibly insane edicts). As Godwin points out, it's not anarchy because with anarchy, you have no leader. Zimbabwe has a leader - unfortunately he's demented and out of control. I so want Godwin to go on all the talk shows and build up awareness so someone will do something! If you log onto Zimbabwe blogs, it appears that everyone there hates him and are praying he will die but even if they get their wish, steps need to be taken so that someone even worse doesn't succeed him.

Six kids who formed a bond over one magical summer that they never forgot. It's a story of magic and lust and mystery and rituals. When I read it I got this feeling that the air was murky and rich with magic, everything felt so heavy and thick and exciting. This series, I can tell already, is not your typical story, yes it's kinky and yes the men are broody but there is so much more to it. We are taken on a journey of self discovery, a search for the truth, a journey of sexual awakening and this is just the first book in the series.It's not a story for close minded people, but if you want adventure and intensity and what I feel like is at least one epic love story (and you're not afraid of some of your boundaries being pushed) then read this book, it is an amazing start to what I'm sure will be an amazing series. I'm already in mourning for the wait times I'm going to have between each book. Thornchapel has a lot left to reveal.

This series is going to be epic if A Lesson in Thorns is any indication of what we have to look forward to. The descriptions and background she gives in her stories takes you on a magical ride. One you won't soon forget. This is one of my top reads of 2019.

But their not kids any more. And Thornchapel isn't either. The place is more alive and magical then they remember as children.It's like they all have been called here to find themselves, their true selves...….In this book you will get to know the characters and their back stories. And learn a little of Thornchapel. This book is filled with a lot of kink and has a big cliffhanger. But it was so good. Book two will be out in June 2019

Douglas Adams had one of the most fascinating minds and personalities I have ever encountered. I bought this book after being a fan of his fiction work for several years and I am very much in love with it. The collection of essays, musings and interviews included will give you some insight into an incredibly interesting and surprisingly inspiring person. The only downside and disappointment is I came to regret I will sadly never get to hear him speak live!

Douglas Adams was always a favorite of mine. His wit was askew, just when you thought you knew where he was going he'd change lanes and take you somewhere else. His interests were eclectic, he didn't pretend to understand things he didn't understand. If I learned anything from his writings, it would be that the Universe is not only larger and more complex than we (humankind) generally think it is, it's much larger and more complex than we could ever comprehend.Losing Adams was sad. He (probably) had quite a lot more to say. In The Salmon Of Doubt his friends went through his drawers and shoeboxes (well, his computer files, actually) and collected all the yet-to-published thoughts and musings, and added their own personal tributes to their friend.In a way, Adams lives. In the hearts and minds of those who respected, admired, and loved him. We should all hope for such and ending.

Published after his death, from material he left behind, this is an insight into his early life and later education, that is an enlightenment to his many fans, not to mention a smashing read. If you have ANY of his books, let alone, ALL of his books, you MST get, and read, this book.

I love all of Douglas Adams actual books, but this posthumously published collection of miscellanea from his hard drives was not one of his finely tuned works of art. Some of the short articles and stories by Adams that were included in this book were quite interesting and gave me insights on the man that his real books did not. The beginning chapters of the unfinished "The Salmon of Doubt" that were included were intriguing, but it was clearly only the beginning of a story that might not even have been outlined in the author's mind. Some of the articles were quite rough and not thoroughly thought out. Adams probably would not have wished them to be published. The volume also included many personal items of praise for Adams that would not be of interest to general readers. I felt them to be a waste of time. This book is probably intended only for very hard-core Adams lovers.

Not at all related to H2G2. But clever and delightful novel from Douglas Adams. If you know of his work, you would have already read this. If you have discovered his work, this is worthy of a read. If you haven't discovered his work and haven't read anything of his, why exactly did you read this whole review??

I found myself grieving at the end of this book - all teary-eyed and sniffling - it felt like I was saying a final good bye to a dear friend. This was Adams's last book - compiled and arranged in the year after his death by his friends and editors. Coming to the end of Salmon of Doubt, and realizing there'd be no more words written by Adams, was really hard for me. I loved this book. The humor, the whimsy, Adams's unique take on the world - it was all there. I wish I'd gotten to know his writing while he was here with us - and I'm so sorry he no longer is.Karen Molenaar Terrell

This book was everything I expected. I was really looking for a humorous sci-fi action packed trip and I was not disappointed at all. Reading this book was similar to the experience I got from the movie Men In Black. The Guide is similar in the way it depicts the univers as simply a zany place to be, full of action and swashbuckling adventure interspersed with a funny undertone. Ive read books before that followed this sort of humourous angle, but mostly turned out to be silly. The Hitchhiker's Guide may not have the most developed characters, but it has a unique charm that draws you into the action and keeps you there with a laugh and leaves you with a cliffhanger ending. The best time to read this book is right after you've just read something overly serious, epic, boring, or studious. Another book I would recommend that has this same similar sci-fi/humor relationship is a book by Piers Anthony called Prostho Plus. Pick up this book, but consider investing in the novel that encompasses all three books in the trilogy. Surely, if you only read this one, you will want more.

He left us much, much too soon, but he seems also to have left a lot of wonderful material on his beloved Apple hard drive. This collection, brilliantly read by Simon Jones, and introduced by Christopher Cerf, Stephen Fry and others, reaches broadly to give us Adams' commentary on the real world and imagination of the world he made for all of us. To my taste, his essays on science and the environment are the most delightful, but the one on the Beatles is pretty wonderful too!The eulogies that begin the series are melancholy, because they remind us that Douglas Adams is gone, but they also show facets that those of us who knew his writings but never had the pleasure of meeting the man might have guessed were there, but for which we now have evidence.Thank goodness we have one more chance to hop a Vorlon space freighter with him.

I have already run a marathon before buying this book, but will certainly utilize it for my next one. Great info, easy to read and comprehend.

Read it trough in several hours.I am about to run my first marathon and this book is what needed. Very practical.

I'm preparing for an early December marathon. I've been running since March, but I had no plan or idea how to get myself "marathon ready." I found this book filled with lots of good suggestions and am excited to apply them. The author put the information, even the dry parts, in an easy to read and follow manner.

I'm one month into the training plan after not having a consistent running schedule at all, and I'm noticing I'm feeling a lot more in shape. I have some muscle fatigue but to help I take the rest days or cross train. It's a great book for beginners.

This book is a must. Has plenty of information with out overkill for the first timer marathoner.

Excellent and easy to follow.

Great book for setting up a training regimen and reducing your chance of injury as you prepare for your first marathon, half marathon, or 10k.
