I LOVE this book! It tells the story of each of the Greek/Roman gods with a lot of detail, even giving us more than one version of some of the stories (some of the gods and goddesses have a slightly different story depending on the culture they are worshiped in). The author also organizes the book well by telling us which gods were related and which were married. It also has a very thorough index in the back.The artwork is amazing! The author gives us tons of photos of beautiful paintings, sculptures, etc. that were made to depict the gods and other mythical figures. So this book is great for art lovers, too.It would be nice if the book was a little bigger- maybe the author will come out with a bigger version. It's very thick, but small. In a way though, the small size is cute.Overall, this is the best Greek/Roman mythology book I've ever read- and I've read a lot!!
I have very mixed feelings about this book. It's very seductive with its nearly 800 pages filled with reproductions of superb art illustrating so many myths and mythological figures. Every time you turn a page, there is a fantastic full-color illustration. And the book is printed on the highest quality glossy paper.This book is like an exciting kaleidoscope of mythology. It imprints those myths in your memory through the beautiful images. I recommend this book for those reasons.But it is also hugely annoying to me that the book is so small (the size of pages is only 4.5 inches by 6 inches). Who on earth would be so stingy and mindless to publish a gorgeous book like this in a "toy" format? This book needs to be re-published in normal size -- not a coffee table book size necessarily, but something like 8 x 10 inches at least. Or make it even a coffee table book; it's worth it. I'd rather pay twice as much, or more, but have a book that I and my family can truly cherish and revisit over the years.I will gladly buy another copy of this book if they republish it in bigger size.
great classic illustrations reflective of mythology; the size is really small, but I actually think it makes it quirky and cute (other reviewers weren't fans of the size; if you have trouble reading small print, it might be an issue). I love it!
It's an interesting book but I was looking for a specific myth by Ovid that was barely touched
The pictures are gorgeous; I find a kind of short the text. Sometimes I think I'm watching a picture book with footnotes. I'd like to see more narrative.But what really needs to be fixed is the format (book size); It does not make justice to the pictures which are often split in two pages.
This book contains nearly every info on nearly every Greek and Roman in existence as well as very high quality photos of the priceless art they're depicted in. While the book is very thick, the size of the paper is about 5x7. While some may not like this (as one reviewer doesn't) since it's hard to do justice to the beautiful art, I think the size makes the book more charming and more portable. I hate giant coffee-table books that you feel like a child reading anywhere away from the couch. Also, you can still get a very good sense of all the details of the artwork. Sometimes art takes up the whole page but I think it's a worthy trade off. It's very understandable with the size they made the book as well because it would've been MUCH more expensive if the book were larger. At roughly 750 pages, with very high detailed art on glossy pages, this book is a steal. My only complaint is that I wish the book had more info and narrative on the myths each figure is portrayed in. The book doesn't go much in depth of the myths themselves. However, it still covers more than the basics and is a perfect book for anyone interested in learning Greek myth, and even for the Classics enthusiast since it's also a vast compilation of sculpture and Renaissance art of every figure in Greek and Roman myth.
