This was the standard architecture guide for Detroit from the time it was first published in 1971 until it was eventually replaced with a new AIA publication (by Hill and Gallagher) in 2003.Both are AIA-sponsored, and organized in standard AIA format. Each entry includes a small monochrome photograph and a brief descriptive essay. Even though the photographs are mostly stock and borrowed from other sources, many are good oblique shots that give you a good feeling for the featured structure.While the new book is more highly concentrated on the center city, this book has more breadth of coverage. It covers the entire city limits, suburbs and includes an excursion to Ann Arbor. Though the coverage is broad, it is not deep. Many HUGE regions of the city are represented by only a few sites, and more than a few of the structures included in this book are no longer standing.This book is the revised edition published in 1980, and the building selection certainly reflects what was considered in vogue during that time. The authors exhibit a definite tendency to heap praise on any (and all) forms of modernism while dismissing traditional forms. Just to prove how fickle these "movements" can be, the new AIA guide (from 2003) includes almost NONE of the "space-age" modernism featured so prominently here. If you like modernism, you'll like this little book.This is a good companion volume to the 2003 AIA Guide, as there isn't too much overlap.

I purchased this book for a global public health course (go figure). As a textbook it was easy to use and easy to reference. I don't always read all of the required material and often use the books as a reference when I am studying or looking up main ideas. This book worked great for that, as a supplement for what was covered in class. The material was easy to read and very straightforward. I bought this book new and ended up not needing the access code so I was able to sell it back for only $20 less than what I had paid for it. So not only was it easy to use it was also a good value.

Well written and very informative book. I used this book for a global health class as a requirement. I enjoyed reading it and found the content to be very interesting. The writing was intelligent, concise, and factual.

Of all my textbooks, this has been one of the most enjoyable to read. I really like that the chapters are short and to the point, giving me the basic information without all the unnecessary fluff I seem to find in so many other textbooks. My only problem was that sometimes the graphs were a little hard to read at first and lacked a key or index to help me understand what exactly I was looking at.Kindle version is excellent. I love the option to search and it really helped with online open-book quizzes for my class. However, the pages are not consistent with the paper copy of this book, which might be a problem for some people.

The information is from 2014 and previous so it’s beginning to become outdated. Otherwise, it’s a fantastic textbook with very enlightening information on public health.

I find this book hard to get into but the information with the class assignments have found it interesting. Also learned that most salt here is bad for you because it does not have the iodine your body needs. Now reading the labels to make sure the salt I buy has what I need. Your thyroid need the Iodine for mental, and physical well-being.

I'm really not a fan of reading books reading is like mandatory until I bought this bookThe author opens every door of learning and understanding, once I started reading the book it keeps me wanting to finish it and so I did and I'm planning to buy more books. But there some topic she discuss and I want to clarify with her someday if there's a chance.

This book has taught me so much about Global Health! It not only teaches me about important concepts, it gives understandable examples of how public health practices are currently being applied in the real world. Great read, I recommend it to anyone who is looking to expand their health literacy.

I love Caroline Jayne Church's art work and this book continues the love. The board book is holding up well to my toddlers and the pictures are adorable. There are times it is difficult for me to keep up with turning the pages while singing the song, since they did only a short segment of the song, but it's the perfect amount for toddlers. For my personal bonus, I have boy/girl twins and this book mimics their experience.

Love this book! Got it for my son to sing and read to our grandson. My sons and I used to sing this fun song when they were little and this book will help continue the tradition. It's a great lil' board book with cute graphics kids are sure to love. Book is made well too. Definitely would recommend sharing the fun.

I love Friends. I have watched the entire series as it aired, on DVD, and streaming on Netflix when it had the rights. There are so many iconic moments that still make me laugh. So I was excited to see a book about the show and I quickly bought and read it.Ehhh. There are some insights but nothing that great, given that the show ran for so long. And much of what is there is just retelling. So I would have given it three stars.Unfortunately, the author felt compelled to examine the show, albeit briefly, through a 2018 lense of political correctness and identity issues. She goes on how the show had many "homophobic" and "transphobic" moments, and was incredibly non-diverse, with 6 white people forming the main cast.Then at the end, the author devotes substantially more pages to a very tangential harassment suit filed by a writers' assistant on the show alleging lots of dirty locker room talk in the writers' room. These pages weren't about the show, the actors, the plots, etc. It was just a chance for the author to tie into #MeToo. A really unnecessary diversion.I find it a bit surprising that the theme of Friends being an escapist, feel-good, no-drama show is mentioned repeatedly, and that theoretically the readers were fans of the show. Yet the author didn't have the sense to realize that her diversions into political correctness and identity issues ran exactly counter to that whole vibe and that people might find it really alienating. Thus one star only.

This book covered a fascinating subject ... poorly. It's worth reading for the information it contains but the author manages to make one of the best topics available into a snooze-fest. Her writing is flat and uninspiring, making this a book you wade through because you love Friends, not a book you can't put down. She repeats herself constantly and makes all sorts of conclusions, based on her own personal experience viewing Friends, that are neither relevant nor interesting. It's the sort of writing more appropriate to a blog than a book, crowded with unnecessary filler. Such a shame that this topic was hijacked by a mediocre writer instead of getting the sort of talented storyteller the subject deserved. Still, as I mentioned earlier, it's worth reading for the trivia around making Friends - I'd just wait until it goes in the "Free on Kindle" pile, or borrow it from your local library.

You’d be better off purchasing the “Friends... til the End” authorized coffee table book that came out when the series wrapped.This book is basically just a re-telling of other articles and stories that have already been written. (The ‘Source Notes’ section is more than 50 pages long).There are some interesting tid bits and trivia, but again it’s mostly stuff we’ve heard before. The author spends a great deal of time talking about how the show impacted her personally (I don’t really need to know, or care, that you time your gym visits to line up with Friends re-runs).Nothing new is learned, no great insight is revealed. There aren’t even pictures to accompany the stories. The author is clearly just trying to cash in on Friends nostalgia. She has taken what should have been a blog post and re-packaged it into a book.

I, like most people, have wonderful memories of sitting with my family watching Friends. I bought a lot of the dvds, I would watch it on syndication. Then I would stop. Then it came on Netflix and I watched it. Then I stopped. But this book was so well-written it has me watching it all over again! But it's not just a nostalgic book, it's genuinely an interesting history of Friends, and about that era seen through the eyes of that tv show.

So I was really excited about this book as excerpts had appeared in articles. And now I see why, the whole book reads like a big newspaper article. This author breezes through the Friends history occasionally touching on moments here or there. But never getting into real detail on things. Some things are never mentioned, like Rachel's pregnancy. Instead she devotes time to society issues like the Friends "homophobia", that stupid Coke a Cola ad campaign or the events around 9/11. This is why reporters are not authors. If you want behind the scene facts about the show you'd learn more reading the IMDB page than you will with this. Don't waste your time, I breezed through the book because there was NOTHING in it I didn't already know.

I’ll be there for you is a deep inside look at the start of the show Friends, and it’s true to its word, I thought I knew the story because I’d read the NBC book about their Thursday night (I forget the title, I think it’s must see tv?). But it turns out there were other stories about Kudrow and other cast members that I hadn’t heard or read about from other sources. I got this as a combo birthday gift for a friend who is really into the show and is moving back to the states, but of course I also had to take a peek!!

A funny, interesting look at the history of Friends. If you’re a huge fan, or just generally interested in behind the scenes and history of shows, you’ll probably enjoy this. The authors voice comes through quite nicely, and it’s very well written.

No matter what anyone tells me, there is no greater television show than friends. We grew up with them. They made us laugh, cry, gasp and every other range of emotion there is. This book is an amazing road trip down the intersects and complications of the wonderful show. There really is so muchto our culture and society that this show really captured, this book is an incredible opportunity to learn and dive more. We were literally just watching a show last night where "the rachel" was applied to a meme. It's how many years later and we're still talking about her hair. It's a great reminder of why it's so easy to connect to this show. HIGHLY reocmmend this book.

I love the fact that this book can be used by yourself, you can meditate and reflect on some of the tough questions she asks, group a pen and answer the questions as she asks you. I like how she breaks in down into easy easy sections to work on at a time. I feel like it would be great in a group also as you get the insight of the other members. Either way it draws you closer to God. A must read and definately one you must share with others. I plan on introducing it to my church as soon as I have done it once myself. I am enjoying the quiet reflections ! way to go! Loved her last book, anxiously awaiting next one.

This is another great book by Jennifer Hayes Yates. This time it's a 6 week Bible study and devotional. It is not a book to read straight through. It is a guided tour through scripture. There are plenty of places where we get to write out Bible verses and answer the author's questions. The book prompted me to stop and really go back and read many important Bible verses. The author stitches together these verses with the main theme: The often quoted Bible verse "Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us". This is a book that can be used for six weeks by one person or a small study group. I highly recommend it!

Let’s Run is a six week Bible study that includes weekend devotionals and end-of-chapter summaries. For people like me that have strayed from the Bible, this was very honestly thought provoking and took me back to my youth when I was more actively involved in the church. Kudos to the author for creating such a wonderful book that will undoubtedly reach countless of people, both devoted and those who need to be.

This 6-week bible study on Hebrews 11 and the first few verses of Hebrews 12 is very in-depth. The author does a very good job of walking the reader through the events referenced in the “Faith Hall of Fame” in Hebrews chapter 11. As we learn more of these heroes of the faith, our own faith is encouraged and challenged. I thought the questions were effective in turning the spotlight on my own faith, as well as challenging me to see myself through the eyes of those who have gone on before. Does my faith measure up to theirs? In reality, none of us has enough faith on our own, but only as God strengthens us. That point is repeatedly made. I thoroughly enjoyed the study and would recommend it to anyone who wants to have a stronger faith. I did the study on my own but appreciate the inclusion of small group questions which would make it appropriate for Bible study groups. Having a paperback would have been preferable but typing my answers on the screen worked well enough.

Let’s Run is a solid, systematic 6 week daily devotional/Bible study based on several passages from the book of Hebrews. This book contains lots of practical applications and action steps. It is theologically sound and offers plenty of encouragement alongside Biblical truth. I read it on my Kindle, but I’m considering picking up a paperback copy so that I can write directly in the book. It’s perfectly designed to use in a group Bible study as well. It is filled with wisdom and insight and I highly recommend it.

I love, love, love the outline to this study! I can’t wait to read it again, this time with my 9 year old daughter! The questions most definitely help with current life applications and for better understanding of biblical Scripture. I would highly recommend to anyone-including those young in the Word as well as spiritually mature Christians. The lessons are applicable to a personal devotion as well as small group studies, including both men and women.

Let's Run is a great 6-seek study on Hebrews 11 and the beginning of Hebrews 12. I have LOVED this study. Jennifer Hayes Yates has a powerful and personal way of opening up the Scriptures. With insightful background into the text, thought-provoking questions and well-related stories, Jennifer has made Hebrews 11 come alive in my heart. And with the Small Group Ideas at the end of each week, I can't wait to do this study with a group!! So good!

"Let's Run!" is a 6-week Bible study covering Hebrews 11 and 12. It gives an in-depth look at how we can relate our lives to those in the Bible and grow spiritually by digging deep in His Word to reveal meaningful perspectives on our lives. I am enjoying this study and especially love how personal the author remains throughout. She really does inspire you to grow as you're going through each lesson! I recommend grabbing a cup of hot cocoa.. a throw.. and making it a "Let's Run" kind of night!Tasha

As a psychologists who works with children on the autism spectrum in group therapy, I am a huge fan of Michelle Garcia Winner and I find her social-cognitive approach to be right on target. I have many of her books and I have attended her trainings. This book, however, was a big disappointment--not because of the thinking behind it, but because of its presentation. I find that the text is much too wordy and the illustrations, while cute, are sometimes confusing. I have tried to use this book in group but I find the children become bored quickly. When I use it, I usually edit it down, skip pages, and try to explain in my own words. I think Michelle would do well to hire a children's author who could present her concepts with much more creativity and much more concisely. What I do like about the book are the pages in the back which offer 3 lesson plans for parents or teachers to further teach social thinking.

I work with children and love this book! I think that it presents concepts behind social skills in non-judgmental, understandable language that kids remember and can relate to. I use it with kids with a wide variety of challenges, not exclusively autism spectrum. I do not find that children complain about this book nearly as much as others I've tried and often even LIKE this book! That said, I do break it into chunks rather than try to read through the whole book in one sitting. When we go to read our next chunk, I go from the beginning and paraphrase the parts we read before, encouraging the child to "fill in the blanks" for the parts they learned last time to reinforce the learning. It is repetitive, as some have said, but I believe that is intentional in order to help the concepts stick and I've never found this book to be overly repetitive to the point that it's grating.Honestly, I was surprised to see so many mixed reviews since I love this book and I know for a fact that several of my co-workers routinely borrow it as well! I definitely recommend it for children who are struggling with social and/or behavioral challenges, especially higher functioning autism spectrum and ADHD diagnoses.

This book introduced a lot of core concepts needed to use the Superflex curriculum that Michelle Garcia Winner also developed. I am using a modified version of this curriculum to teach a social skills group with children with autism and Asperger's. This book was a bit wordy and complicated for my clients at times; however, the core concepts in the book are very good. Like I said, I modified the curriculum to suit my clients' needs. This book might be good for the educator to learn about the concepts so they can teach it more proficiently.

Excellent book. Well structured with lesson plans in the back. Pictures and activities are engaging. Vocabulary is easy to discuss and use during everyday social situations if children are familiar with the book. I often use the pictures in the book as visual reminders to use specific social skills.

We've been using this with our autistic child after her speech therapist recommended it. It's been helping us teach her things like expected and unexpected behavior.

My 7 year old son was captivated when he first saw the cover! He insisted that I read it right away. Now He is hooked! He keeps picking it up to read on his own. My son is very rule oriented and this book is written in such a way that he totally gets what it's teaching! Now in conversation he talks about the rules of social behavior using the lingo from the book and even run over an get the book to reference what his point is. This is a must read!

My kids love this series. I wish it was more inexpensive but seems worth it for the benefit.

This is a good book for kids who have some issues about understanding social cues, although virtually every child could benefit from reading this.
