As a psychologists who works with children on the autism spectrum in group therapy, I am a huge fan of Michelle Garcia Winner and I find her social-cognitive approach to be right on target. I have many of her books and I have attended her trainings. This book, however, was a big disappointment--not because of the thinking behind it, but because of its presentation. I find that the text is much too wordy and the illustrations, while cute, are sometimes confusing. I have tried to use this book in group but I find the children become bored quickly. When I use it, I usually edit it down, skip pages, and try to explain in my own words. I think Michelle would do well to hire a children's author who could present her concepts with much more creativity and much more concisely. What I do like about the book are the pages in the back which offer 3 lesson plans for parents or teachers to further teach social thinking.

I work with children and love this book! I think that it presents concepts behind social skills in non-judgmental, understandable language that kids remember and can relate to. I use it with kids with a wide variety of challenges, not exclusively autism spectrum. I do not find that children complain about this book nearly as much as others I've tried and often even LIKE this book! That said, I do break it into chunks rather than try to read through the whole book in one sitting. When we go to read our next chunk, I go from the beginning and paraphrase the parts we read before, encouraging the child to "fill in the blanks" for the parts they learned last time to reinforce the learning. It is repetitive, as some have said, but I believe that is intentional in order to help the concepts stick and I've never found this book to be overly repetitive to the point that it's grating.Honestly, I was surprised to see so many mixed reviews since I love this book and I know for a fact that several of my co-workers routinely borrow it as well! I definitely recommend it for children who are struggling with social and/or behavioral challenges, especially higher functioning autism spectrum and ADHD diagnoses.

This book introduced a lot of core concepts needed to use the Superflex curriculum that Michelle Garcia Winner also developed. I am using a modified version of this curriculum to teach a social skills group with children with autism and Asperger's. This book was a bit wordy and complicated for my clients at times; however, the core concepts in the book are very good. Like I said, I modified the curriculum to suit my clients' needs. This book might be good for the educator to learn about the concepts so they can teach it more proficiently.

Excellent book. Well structured with lesson plans in the back. Pictures and activities are engaging. Vocabulary is easy to discuss and use during everyday social situations if children are familiar with the book. I often use the pictures in the book as visual reminders to use specific social skills.

We've been using this with our autistic child after her speech therapist recommended it. It's been helping us teach her things like expected and unexpected behavior.

My 7 year old son was captivated when he first saw the cover! He insisted that I read it right away. Now He is hooked! He keeps picking it up to read on his own. My son is very rule oriented and this book is written in such a way that he totally gets what it's teaching! Now in conversation he talks about the rules of social behavior using the lingo from the book and even run over an get the book to reference what his point is. This is a must read!

My kids love this series. I wish it was more inexpensive but seems worth it for the benefit.

This is a good book for kids who have some issues about understanding social cues, although virtually every child could benefit from reading this.

Houman Shadab's review is right on the money -- including what's left _out_ of this otherwise excellent introductory work. Since I like Hayek, Barnett, and Rothbard, I find the omission disappointing -- but c'est la vie.Anyway, if you're looking for a solid overview of the various schools of thought involving the relations between law and economics, this volume is a great place to start. (_Complete_ newcomers might also want to pick up Dennis Patterson's _Companion to Philosophy of Law and Legal Theory_, which includes a fine essay on "Law and Economics.")One tremendous merit of the present volume is that it doesn't limit itself to the "Chicago school." The U of Chi crowd gets a single chapter, and the rest of the book is devoted to the other schools of thought Mr. Shadab has helpfully listed below. The resulting volume is therefore pretty comprehensive (with the exceptions already noted).Readers interested in this topic may want to read Thomas Miceli's _Economics of the Law_ next. I don't personally favor the mathematical-models approach (for the usual Misesian/Rothbardian reasons) -- but Miceli's volume is a fine introduction to that approach and will afford the reader the opportunity to judge it on its merits.

The authors know what they are talking about. The book is a survey of the main strains of law and economics theories and approaches. It provides examples of each theory and that can be illuminating. However, more examples could have given a better sense to the differences across the several theories. The notes are well written and provide all you need for further reading.

This is a much better introduction to law and economics than the conventional textbook that only gives you the orthodox neoclassical view. It isn't all easy reading but if you have had an introductory course in economics and have some patience it is a great book.

What is law & economics? It is the school of jurisprudence in which the tools of microeconomic analysis are used to study law. Those of us who practice economic analysis have a deceptively simple task. We translate some legal doctrine into economic terms. We then apply a few basic principles -- cost-benefit analysis, collective action theory, decision-making under uncertainty, risk aversion, and the like -- to the problem. Finally, we translate the result back into legal terms.Law & economics unquestionably is the most successful form of intellectual arbitrage in the history of jurisprudence. Why? Traditional forms of legal scholarship were mostly backward looking. One reasoned from old precedents to decide a present case, seemingly without much concern (at least explicitly) for the effect today's decision would have a future behavior. Yet, law is necessarily forward looking. To be sure, a major function of our legal system is to resolve present disputes, but law's main job is to regulate future behavior. The law & economics movement succeeded because it recognized that judges cannot administer justice solely retrospectively. They must also consider what rules their decisions will create to guide the behavior of other actors in the future. Even more important, however, law & economics gives judges systematic mechanisms for predicting how rules will affect behavior.Mercuro and Medema's text offers a comprehensive overview of law & economics. Unlike many texts, it is not limited to the Chicago School (as exemplified by such stalwarts as Manne, Easterbrook, and Posner). They also describe the New Haven school (classically exemplified by Calabresi), the public choice theory of Arrow, Buchanan, and others, as well as both the traditional and new institutional economics. By reminding us that law & economics is not a homogeneous field, and providing a fair commentary on each of the major traditions within the larger discipline, they offer an excellent introduction to this important area of jurisprudence.One nice touch, which makes the text useful for a wide audience, is that it does not assume familiarity with either economics or law. The introduction offers a brief historical overview of basic jurisprudence, as well as an appendix explaining basic economic principles. Consequently, the book will serve well the interests both of lawyers who need to brush up on economics and economists interested in law.Criticisms that led me to subtract one star: There is little in the way of critical evaluative judgment. Indeed, Mercuro and Medema disavow any effort at criticism. As a result, the reader is left to his own devices. Second, I am not persuaded by Mercuro and Medema's decision to include a rather lengthy chapter on critical legal studies. Criticism of law & economics has been a major project of CLS scholars, but CLS scholarship has had no influence of any significance on any of the dominant strains of law & economics thinking. In this case, moreover, the failure to exercise critical evaluative judgment means that the generalist reader may have difficulty assessing the (bogus) claims made by CLS. In general, while maintaining facial neutrality on their own part, Mercuro and Medema give far more attention to CLS and Marxist critiques of law & economics than they do to conservative critiques thereof or to law & economics criticisms of CLS.

A nice piece of work. The authors undertake a difficult task: providing a readable introduction to the varied "law and economics" movement. The first chapter is one of the better narrative explications of the idea of efficiency that I have seen. It is followed by chapters on the various schools that make up the law and economics movement, each of which provides a good,brief intellectual history of the school and a helpful exposition of its content. For the undergraduate, this book is really a service since it also provides good follow up reading in the field. For the lawyer becoming interested in economics, this may well be the best place to start. Kudos to the authors and Princeton University Press: a clear and well-written book that serves an important purpose.

In short: This is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to be better at telling stories. This is a skill I've wanted to develop, so I started with this book. Really glad I did. In fact, it ended up winning me major Boyfriend Points.I offered my copy of the book to my girlfriend when she had to attend a company retreat and participate in a get-to-know-you exercise where everyone had to tell a two-minute story. We're talking about standing up and telling a personal anecdote in front of an audience of about fifty coworkers, managers, and direct-reports. Oh, and my girlfriend has social anxiety. So, needless to say... there was a good bit of hand-wringing and deliberation over this exercise.Imagine how happy I was when she came back from the retreat glowing and excited to tell me about how well her story had gone. Not only did it feel good and comfortable to tell, but it also got a lot of positive feedback. Her coworkers really enjoyed it. She had directly applied many of the concepts explained so clearly and entertainingly in Long Story Short and hit the ball out of the park.Buying Long Story Short is a favor you can do for yourself if you want to be better at storytelling. It might even burnish your reputation as a partner.

I bought this for tips about writing short stories. (Yes, I knew this was written for storytellers, meaning: people who tell stories, on stage.)While most of the book wasn't useful to me, the writing tips that I DID glean -- like opening with something credible that connects with your reader/audience -- are tremendously valuable. They're things I wouldn't have thought of, myself, and I've never seen this kind of advice in writing books.It's not a book for EVERY kind of writer. However, if you're writing "short reads" or short stories, and you need to grab (hook) your reader quickly, this book provides great insights.

I am in a storytelling cast at my local comedy club and I didn't like how one of my performances had gone. I bought Margot's book and it made all of the difference in the world. I wrote my story and it was flat and awful. I went back through her book chapter by chapter and tried to make adjustments based on her advice. It worked! I told a bold story and the audience laughed the whole time. I also discovered my personal voice/style by doing the exercises and answering the questions in this book. I also watched several of Margot's videos on YouTube. I don't have the same style as her, but I was inspired to do better and it worked.

I'm new to the storytelling scene and found this book to be amazingly helpful. A great read, getting Churchill's dispatches from South Africa during the Boer War was super. The writing was obviously stilted as done 120 years ago, but getting his view on the conflict and seeing how he was in the action, but still seemingly living the life of the English upper class was very interesting. I found it a good read and would have liked more, but it consisted of the two packets of dispatches he'd made during the few months he was in South Africa and is limited to that, now a full coverage of the conflict. I found it fascinating.

What a fun book to read from a late 19th Century perspective. Not only does Churchill's keen wit and analysis of the evolving military situation unfold in this journalistic account, but you get to re-live Churchill's personal exploits and misfortunes in this book.

This is a highly detailed account by Winston Churchill of his participation in the last year of the Boer War from the end of 1899 to mid 1900. His magnificent writing style overcomes the minimal discussion of the political and economic factors of the war. Ideal book for those who enjoy reading about the tactics of individual battles and who enjoy learning about the emotions of Churchill during the period. Excellent book for researchers and for those who enjoy the perfect turn-of-phrase.

Winston Churchill, in my estimation, is one of premier masters of the English language. Yes, his reporting is biased but he takes great pains to let his reading audience know this. Many times in the account of his participation in the Boer War he gives credence to the activities and courage of his adversaries. An enlightening and rewarding read.

Excellent account from the British aspect of the Boer War. I loved the clear detail on tactics and descriptions of the ground and region. The book clarified the history in several way and especially highlighted the Martial Spirit that allowed the Crown to achieve so much. We could use the type of real unit spirit described here these days.

Easy, interesting reading. Churchill's writing style entertaining as well as informative. On scene evaluations and analysis written as it happened. This book was very informative. I believe anyone that may be a student if Church History and leadership....this is a must read. The notes are extremely helpful and it's not laced with academic intertwining that makes it hard for the common layperson to read through.

I picked up this book expecting not to like it, and actually started to heavily enjoy it from the start. Sullivan looks very closely and critically at the writings of the New Testament, and the church fathers of the late-first through the mid-third century , attempting to discover the development of the Church as an organization. Sometimes I could not believe the words I was reading are written by a Roman Catholic. Sullivan is not affraid to say the rhetoric of many Roman Catholic scholars that one often hears is wrong... though he ultimately agrees with the final conclusions of the Roman Catholic Church.One will find Sullivan's scholarhip and conclusions to be extremely tight, and difficult to argue with. Though, he essentially says some of his conclusions can only be accepted by faith... that is: the post New Testament development of the Church in the second and third centuries to have been divinely guided by the Spirit.He tries to prove this saying, "We have just as good reason for believing that the Spirit guided the church in recognizing its bishops as successors of the apostles and authoritative teachers of the faith as we have for believing that the Spirit guided it in discerning the books that comprise the New Testament." (p. 230) A powerful argument, but ultimately, only one that can be accepted by faith. Many scholars would say the books that make up New Testament canon were well accepted by consensus of the faithful at large well before the bishops decided it in formal councils.Ultimately though, I personally believe the fundamental flaw which the author makes is the assumption that the apostolic office faded out of existance after the intial apostles and their apostolic co-workers died. Many Pentecostals/Charismatics (such as myself) would strongly disagree with Sullivan, and would say that the New Testament points to a continuation of the apostolic office (Ephesians 4:11-13) well beyond that of the first century (Many would say it continues to exist today). If apostles would continue to exist, then, one cannot properly say that bishops replaced the apostles and their co-workers. I would be highly interested to see what Sullivan would think of this point of contention... one that he is probably aware of.Overall, this book will probably become a classic in the study of Ecclesiology... and rightfully so.

Because I am a Lutheran clergyman, it is predictable that I disagree with Father Sullivan about what it means for the "one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church" to be both catholic and apostolic. Therefore, I disagree with Father Sullivan regarding his conclusions about the nature of the episcopacy and the validity of the Eucharist outside of Roman Catholic communities.Nevertheless, Father Sullivan's research is scrupulously honest, even when honesty demands that he disagree with popular Catholic beliefs. He presents his opponents' arguments gently and with great kindness. His arguments and conclusions are reasonable. Perhaps most importantly, his discussion is intellectually and spiritually stimulating.Whether you agree or disagree with the Roman Catholic position on these issues, read Father Sullivan's work. You will struggle with its rich content. You will grow because of that struggle.

Fr. Sullivan's approach is not one of dogmatic polemic. Instead, he is candid about where the case for apostolic succession in the Roman Catholic church is weak. At the same time, he is clear at where the case is quite strong. His homework and scholarly detail is meticulous and challenging. Yet, despite the depth of study, Fr. Sullivan's text is immensely approachable and entertaining. This is the source for thinking through this important topic and no library of ecclesiology (Protestant, Catholic, or Orthodox) is complete without this concise but thorough study of apostolic succession.
