Valerie Easton is a weekly garden columnist for Pacific Northwest Magazine of The Seattle Times. Her own low-maintenance garden, the muse for this book, has been published in The New York Times, This Old House, and Horticulture. She has contributed articles on gardens, homes, and the people who make them to a variety of magazines, including Metropolitan Home, Fine Gardening, and Gardens Illustrated. Valerie trained as a Master Gardener and was for eighteen years the horticultural librarian at the University of Washington in Seattle. The quality of the writing in this book is excellent, and it has a lot of helpful information and inspiring ideas and photos. Unfortunately, it is not a pleasure to use the book because of the lousy Chinese print job. I hope the authors are listening so they don't ruin their next book.The font is TERRIBLE and makes reading difficult and irritating, something the reader is unable to forget during the entire reading experience. Therefore, reading is not a relaxing, enjoyable experience. I guess the publisher saved two cents by using a font so small, light, and annoyingly "delicate" that it uses less ink. You almost need a high-powered magnifying glass to read the photo captions.The photos are unpleasant to view and actually look much better on Amazon's "Look Inside" viewing option. I'm not a pro photographer, so I don't have the technical language, but I'll try my best. The photos are dark, muddy, and are not crisp and clear, making it difficult to discern all objects in the photo. The pages have a "glare" to them, so the reader must constantly shift the book to attempt to see each entire photo. The paper has a weird, slightly "sandy" feel to it, which I believe has something to do with a coating that makes it difficult to see the photos.Finally, the printing on each page in the bound area starts and/or ends too close to the binding, again necessitating endless shifting of the book to read it. Or the reader could keep pressing hard on the binding to attempt to flatten the book to read it better, although this will quickly destroy the glued (not sewn) binding, causing the pages to fall out and the book to fall apart.Suggestion: Bring those printing jobs back home to the USA and do it right the next time. Let the Chinese spend more of their time killing us with melamine-laced human and pet food, and creating clothes with material so thin you're embarrassed to wear them to the office and have to watch them fall apart after a few cleanings.

I was the gardener who would wander with a new plant purchase in hand, trying to figure out where to put it. Despite my love of plants and enjoyment of gardening, the large border garden in front of my house was scraggly in spots, overgrown in others, often weedy, and just plain incoherent. This book changed all that. It taught me to ruthlessly cull plants that were doing well but didn't thrill me, along with those that weren't flourishing, and those that were taking over, to create a well-edited garden that can be enjoyed in multiple ways.I first read the whole book not long after it was published and then revisited it in early spring for the next couple years. I just got it out again, thinking of a friend who is planning a yard renovation after retirement. On re-reading the first couple of chapters I realize just how much I absorbed from this book and how helpful it's been.Some reviewers complain that the book doesn't give plant recommendations for their areas or that the style of gardens in the book doesn't suit them. I see this book as providing a very practical foundation for the layman. There are many good books on garden style and plant selection. My garden is a mostly native xeriscape, and I used the books "The American Meadow Garden" by Greenlee, "Plant-Driven Design" by Ogden & Ogden, and a couple plant reference books for my state for style inspiration and plant information. But I could not have done it without The New Low-Maintenance Garden.

There are many books on this subject and I own a lot of them. I decided on this one because of the word "new" in the title; curious to know how we can do low maintenance differently. I was not disappointed. The information is presented in an easy to read format that describes gardens around the country with different zones and varied concepts. Each story is accompanied by good pictures to further explain and to inspire. Depending on the needs of the garden owners, the story may focus on less plants/more hardscape or more foliage/less flowers; but each story explains how that garden was successful. At the end of each section, the author sets out a great list of resources to further your education: books, videos, websites.Throughout the chapters there are recommendations on how to incorporate sustainable aspects in your garden; how to attract wildlife; how to enjoy your garden without spending hours working in it. The format is great. You can view just the pictures and associated text and learn a lot; the main text is divided by gardens so it is easy to flip around if you want to read about your type; and the writing is well written and informative--specific plants are recommended in each topic to help with pulling together the "look". This is one of the best garden books I've purchased to date -- it has inspired me to complete my one acre garden -- believing that it can be maintained without hours of daily work.

While this is a handsome book, and certainly helpful to many gardeners, it is a disappointment to me. I have only skimmed it, but I find nothing in it to help me: the gardens cited in it are mostly in Seattle, Portland, or Arlington VA. Because I live in hot, dry Kansas. it's just a flop for me. I'm not sure how the book should have been advertised to let others like me know, but I do feel that the attempt to do so would have been a help.One example of disappointment: I went to the USDA plant chart, and it was so small I couldn't read it. I'd guess no one could without a very powerful magnifying glass.

I chose this because of the reviews on all such books and I was not disappointed. I have gardened for years and am trying to simplify the yard needs. Spring is coming and my mind is on what I need to do, so the timing was just right. It has an emphasis on "no lawn" in a couple of chapters which is not my thing but I like incorporating "food" that is also pretty for the beds. Also the idea of fewer perennials and ones that are lower maintenance for water, etc needs.

Great book, came fast.

The quality of it was really poor and honestly wouldn't of purchased this product if I was aware of the condition of it being as bad as it was. I'd recommend buying it buying it brand new and not used like I did.

Conan Edogawa's short frame really doesn't allow him to get close up and personal with the criminals he tracks down, so he's asked his mad scientist neighbor, Doctor Agasa, who serves as an equivalent to James Bond's "Q", to come up with some devices to compensate. Now, in addition to his voice modulating bowtie, he has added super sneakers, which give him powerful kicking power, and stretchy suspenders made of incredibly strong material that can be used to tie up suspects. Because Jimmy Kudo now has the body of a six year-old, Agasa convinces him to enroll in elementary school, much to his dismay. In this volume, Conan lends a hand to Richard Moore as a man he was hired to tail ends up dead in a school bonfire celebration. Then Conan and crew help a young high school student find her missing father, a father who quickly is found hanging from the rafters of his apartment! In the final story, things get a little scarier as Conan and some of his elementary schoolmates investigate a haunted house.While some of devices Conan is equipped with this volume seem a little goofy, once you think about it, they're no more kooky than some of the gadgets Bond has fiddled with since Goldfinger. A drawback to Gosho Aoyama's writing is that the cases Conan gets involved with are pretty easy to figure out without much effort. But to Gosho's credit, he does make it interesting with slight plot twists and characterization. It's just nothing above average. The story I enjoyed most here was the one where the kids go into the haunted house. It's just funny to see Conan interact with them. Also, Rachel really surprised me with her strength, impressing me when she went through a car windshield with a flying kick to nab a suspicious man. Aoyama has got some good characters here, it's just that the mystery elements are nothing to write home about.

If you are responsible for landlording any real property THIS is the one book you should own.easy to read, easy to understand: it gives you all you need.Use it!I also bought the yellow cover book, "Landlording: A Handymanual for Scrupulous..." which is a lot of reading in small print pain to use

I've just started the Kindle version, and so far it has lots of info that I didn't even consider when I came up with the idea of becoming a landlord. It's so thorough. It even lists mistakes of past owners so you can prepare for such things.The forms are downloadable on their website, but I did not try those yet. You can also see them in the Kindle version if you're making custom ones and just want ideas.

I highly recommend the Kindle version, as you can do keyword searches for the specific topic that you are concerned with. This book has answered many legal questions for me since becoming a landlord.

I had had this book a few years ago & it came with a CD with landlord forms. It was easy to setup. I thought this would be the same.Forms are supposed to be downloadable but not sure if the correct names. It was so simple to open the file& read what you needed. Really disappointed.

The book was a basic guide when your starting out. It had organized the material that we may already know to manageable reminders. The forms on disc were very helpful. The cost is unfortunately prohibitive to add to a start up investment. Its the kind of purchase that you thought to expensive at the time but after you make all the mistakes you realize the book could have saved you a lot of aggravation & money if you had just bought it. A landlords understanding of rental laws and providing documents explaining what's expected of the tenant can help avoid misunderstandings. If that doesn't work the signed, agreed to documentation stands up in court. Enlightenong the landlord, preparing documents and material on what to do when the lease is being ignored are all covered in the book.

If you only wanted to buy one book to help you get going in landlording, this is the one. It covers all the legal considerations you need to be aware of as a landlord including differences in state laws and the legal forms you need. In so doing, it covers most of the landlording issues that other books do since, really, most of them boil down to legal issues.The state-by-state legal differences were particularly useful so I could craft my lease and properly follow the letter of the law. With just a generic how-to-landlord book, I'm not sure what I would have done. I probably wouldn't have been as aware as I should have about my local laws. And, bonus, the book is clear and easy to read.

Good guide, great read for Landlords...

This book was recommended by a friend who has rental properties. I had been using a property manager in the past but decided to go it on my own, and this guide was great at walking me through all the steps to get a tenant in my rental house. The appendix shows the various state laws, disclosures, etc. that are specific to each state. I was also able to tweak the lease agreement to suit my needs. I would highly recommend this Guide to anyone who has rental properties, especially for inexperienced Landlords.My only complaint was the time it took for the Guide to arrive. I usually get my Amazon products within a few days, and usually before the initial estimated delivery date. For some reason, this Guide took more than 10 days to get to me. This was during the rental application process, and I really could have used the Guide a little sooner. I almost bought it at my local Borders, but it was about $15 more expensive and Amazon had already shipped my order.

I have very conflicting feelings about this novel. There were some things the author did incredibly well that really sucked me into the story and made it a worthwhile read, but there were some things that weren't quite as well done and really bothered me. So this is going to be longer and a little more rant-y than my usual reviews, but it's not all bad, I promise.I'll start with the things I liked.The first half of the book had more issues that I'll get into below, but the further I got into the book, the harder it got to put down. About halfway in, the characters, their problems, their relationships, and their emotions really started getting deep and rich and complicated. It went beyond cookie cutter emotions and obstacles and became a web of pain and anger and grief all interconnected with inner demons and the effects the past were having on the characters in their present situations. Somehow the author managed to portray the complex emotions in a natural way and get me to sympathize with all the characters on all sides of the conflict. The emotions were so high and intense sometimes, but they still made sense. THAT is the kind of stuff I love in my books.The second half was also when the book started to get disturbing in a good way because it was more about psychological things and characters trying to handle the messed up events in their lives. One particularly disturbing (but in a good way, albeit definitely fitting with the gruesomeness of the book) thing was [hidden spoiler can be found in my review on my blog or Goodreads.] So my point is, I was incredibly impressed with the psychological depth from about the middle on. Like, INCREDIBLY impressed.Now for the things I disliked.*TRIGGER WARNING: I'm going to be discussing rape a lot, in somewhat graphic ways, in the next few parts of the review. There might also be a few mildly spoiler-ish things, but nothing big or important or concerning main plot points.*Rape. Rape everywhere. Also various other types of sexual perversion and abuse, cannibalism, gruesome violence, torture, drug use, and more disturbing crap I don't even have a word for. I wasn't expecting the book to be rainbows and butterflies---I like dark books. And I have read other books with graphic gore and rape and been able to handle it. I was expecting disturbing. But this book hit my upper limits. (Especially that part when Reaver found Killian in the factory.) That alone isn't what bothered me though. I can respect that just because something is beyond my comfort zone that doesn't make it bad. The problem was that most of it seemed to be there for shock value, especially in the first half of the book (the second half was... slightly more toned down in the shock value factor... slightly). It wasn't all necessary to the story, and it was over-the-top.But the interesting thing is, I was most bothered by the scene with the two main characters, Reaver and Killian. The sex started out consensual, but that changed when Reaver started hurting Killian. Killian was shouting at Reaver to stop, but Reaver didn't stop until he was physically pulled away. One person did blatantly call Reaver a rapist, but, by the next scene, it was forgotten, Reaver never apologized, and Killian just made excuses for Reaver and blamed himself. That made me feel unsettled on a deeper level than the other more violent scenes because of how it was explained away as being ok. I kept waiting and waiting for it to come up, for Reaver to apologize, for someone to say something more, but it never happened. I was just left feeling completely on edge about it. I will say, however, that at least the rape in the book wasn't romanticized. In fact, it was downright brutal and hard to read.Another issue was that like 90% of the characters were rapists, including the protagonist (in the aforementioned scene) and many of the main characters. It pushed my suspension of disbelief too far and became gratuitous. It also made me dislike the characters because rape is unforgivable to me. I actually kinda liked Reaver, sociopathic tendencies and all, in the beginning. He was a jerk who enjoyed killing, but he didn't kill innocents, and he didn't go out of his way to be a jerk. He was loyal and protected his town and the few people he did care about. He just liked to be left alone. But then he raped someone with a machete, and that was the end of my Reaver-liking. I didn't even care when he sliced open the legionaries' legs, ripped the throat out of one, chased another to the edge of a cliff, and chopped the head off another. They deserved it, and Reaver was just trying to find Killian and get his vengeance. But raping a man with a machete is just sick and terrible. Some other characters did acknowledge that, and there was kind of an explanation for why Reaver was like that, but it still made him impossible to like.*END TRIGGER WARNING*But then Killian, one of the few characters who wasn't a rapist, wasn't likeable either. The thing is, he started out as a perfectly normal, acceptable character, but then as soon as we got to the point when he was dating Reaver, he turned into this weak, submissive, emotional, dramatic, squealing, giggling, crying, wimpy, whiny, pathetic, lost little kitten of a character. Being mentally ill and/or struggling after going through terrible experiences is one thing. Being Killian is something else entirely. He acted more like a child than a 17-year-old man who had been screwed up and hardened by the world he lived in. I think my favorite moment of Killian's was [hidden spoiler can be found in my review on my blog or Goodreads.]Another issue was the plot. It was a bit episodic, but mostly I was bothered by the fact that there wasn't really a goal. I like knowing what we're working toward when I read books so that I know if the characters are getting closer or further.One last problem I had was the editing. I wouldn't normally let that bother me, but there were just too many issues with verb tense not quite making sense, sentences with confusing typos, using the wrong word, etc. There was also a lot of repetition. I also hated how the author had most of the book in 1st person POV alternating between Reaver and Killian but then sometimes changed to 3rd person POV of other characters and once went to 1st person POV of some random character named Jade, especially since Jade was the worst narrator ever. He literally just went into shock or something and had no clue what was going on which then meant I had no clue what was going on.All of that being said though, any book that can impress me the way this one did with the complexity of the characters and their emotions is worth my time and is a book I'm glad to have read. And any book that can actually keep my attention for 800+ pages---and keep my attention enough to make me finish it in three days---is obviously doing something right. Everything about Fallocaust had me completely gripped the entire time. I've not read something along these lines for quite some time and was very pleasantly surprised both at the book and at myself.The story was brilliant. It felt original and unexplored (leaving so much room for more). The entire concept was fresh and drew me in immediately. As for the characters themselves... I couldn't have asked for more. Every single person had a history and a personality. They all have their darkness, but there is also light. Reaver is strong, brooding and sharp. Killian is smart and innocent with an undiscovered depth. Reno sparks a smile with every action. Greyson and Leo are very realistic and true to how life actually is. Even the secondary characters, Perish, Matt, Shadii, Hollis, Nero, Jade, Silas, everyone else has a purpose and a story. They all come together in a beautifully tragic beginning to an epic.While the story is gruesome and violent and dark, the light shines through without dismissing the shadows entirely. That is what I loved about it. There is good and bad in everyone and everything and that is what makes a good read. It is realistic to how life truly is. It doesn't glaze over the pain and sorrow, but uses those emotions to fuel the characters and story.As fair warning: those with weak stomachs may have issues reading through a couple passages, but in the same respect, those passages bring a needed insight into the character development.Am really looking forward to what happens next!

This book. This dang book (PG word substitution just for you, Amazon!). I got it because the author used to write fanfiction and while I never read his fan stuff--heck yeah, I'm all for fandom writers done good! I put off reading it for about 6 months after I first heard about it. I devour books, I'm constantly out of things to read and constantly looking for new things to read. But every book I've read that has been written by gay men about gay men has been extremely anti-women. It's exhausting, and as a gay woman, I didn't feel up to reading.Lo and behold, when I finally took the plunge, Quil Carter defied my expectations. There aren't many female characters (for a canonically good reason), but those that are aren't demonized. So great! Awesome. I kept reading.The concept is interesting, and as a fan of the Fallout games, I appreciate the environment and also the constant callbacks to what no doubt served as an inspiration. The characters are fascinating--more on that below. The writing is decent; as some others have remarked, it could use an editor, but what it lacks in consistent style it makes up for in pacing and plot. More awesome. The characters are well-done and believable, for the most part. There are some fantastical elements to their characterization (I'm talking about Incorruptible Pure Pureness. If you've read the book, you know who I mean) and a villain protagonist who, while fascinating, may be hard for some people to take. I don't mean "villain" like Loki Laufeyson who just "wasn't understood" by Daddy and so had to act out. I mean a raping, murdering, cannibalizing, torturing villain who is a total sociopath.So there's that. I skip rape scenes, though, so I it didn't matter when compared with everything else. The one thing that DID really bother me about this book is that it's, well. Racist.As an example, there are four classes of human in the wastes: rat, raver, arian, and chimera. Rats and ravers are the two sub-human groups. Rats are kept as food/livestock by the arians. Within the first twenty pages, we get a description of the rats as exclusively dark-skinned. This follows with a description of the ravers as having dark skin.Without exception, until the second book, all arians have white skin. All examples of extreme beauty are described as having "opal" skin or blond hair. Coupled with the word "arian," you can see where I'm going with this.Excessive exposure to radiation can cause darkening or reddening of the skin, I get this. Buuuuut there are no characters with dark skin, with the exception of some random extra in the second book. I haven't read the entire series yet, so maybe the author fixes this. And sure, "arian" can have a variety of meanings, but there's a lot of emphasis placed on the opalescence of skin.I'm giving it 3 stars because I don't think the author did it intentionally, but it's really something I wish he'd fix.

The whole book is a wonderful blend of narrative, history, policy and politics that speaks to both our minds and our hearts. I highly recommend it.
