About the Author

I am already a very experienced and respected gardener and did in fact begin my horticultural career in lawn care. Although to some degree, I do regret that my degree was not in a horticultural related subject, my business studies knowledge as well as my finance background has been extremely useful to me driving my business forward in a realistic and positive way. An absolutely top quality guide in every sense of the word!I’ve come across many start-up related books where it has been clear to me that the advice was simply recycled information that could be easily found on the internet, written by authors with no intrinsic knowledge of what they’re writing about. Fortunately, “The Lawn Care Entrepreneur” is far from the aforementioned, and I could tell early on in the read that Jamie Raines is truly competent with the lawn-care trade and also has plenty of first-hand experience.What I admire most about this book is the smooth manner in which the writing is expressed. I found the information to be very easy to understand and also far from feeling like a chore to read, while still being incredibly insightful. There’s plenty of finance related tips too that I found to be helpful, especially those regarding VAT and insurance, which leads me to believe that the author has really covered all bases with this book. I highly recommend it.

The book contains the authors own experience and the incidents he faced in starting his business provide a great deal of back up and example for someone.The book goes on explaining number of aspects you have to consider in starting a business like this. Author describes as Advertising, horticulture, marketing, laws and regulations to be some of the main concerns that you would come across. SWOT analysis is recommended before starting. In starting this business you are going to need mower, hedge trimmer, strimmers, edgers and many other equipment. Mobilization will be a major concern and how to plan the transportation is well described in this book. You could advertise your business by labor T-shirts, brand names, stickers, logo and business cards and all the details are well provided by the reader. Accounting and tax details and the need of book keeping is also mentioned here. Composting is suggested as a waste management and cost minimization method in this business by the author.You should definitely read this book before you start up a lawn care business and my opinion is that this book is not only about lawn care, this book provides practical guide lines on marketing and entrepreneurship too.

This is a start-up guide for someone who is inexperienced with the industry. If you have already established your business, then there is minimal information that will be of use unless you launched with no experience and are struggling to put everything in place. It does provide a practical approach for anyone considering this profession.

This book let us book and enjoy a trip to the Seychelles. Visited 3 islands, and this book prepared us for each location. Gave useful directions and ideas for day trips. Well worth the cost.

First off, I'd like to say that when we booked our trip to the Seychelles, I immediately went to the book store to get Fodor's guide, as I've always used theirs in the past and found them very informative. The book combined Mauritias, Reunion, and the Seychelles. The Seychelles only took up 50 pages! It felt wrong to spend $25 on a 300-page book that only had 50 pages that I wanted. Then I found this 200-page strictly Seychelles book and I knew it would be perfect. It is! It has all of the info that I like - breakdowns on each island/region/town, with all of the hotels, places to eat, things to do... And correlating maps, too. The inside cover has a quick guide with time/money conversions and a key for the whole book. You know, the sort of stuff that a travel guide should have! I have yet to take my trip, it's 9 months away, but already I feel more prepared and aware. Thank you Bradt! I think I have found a new brand of travel guides!

Here in Brazil, I read this good book about the Seychelles. Being writen about ten years ago, I found the text excellent, about the Seychelles islands. All qualities and problems of these beautifull, prettiness, loveliness or comeliness islands are in this book. The text is well organized and anyone can read and understand are this concise and correct book. The photos are the real problem of this book. There's just too few photos, in this book.

Among the number of titles that we reviewed on our recent sailing charter in the Seychelles, this and the Sarah Carpin guide book (both 2005 publications) served us the best. In fact, this book was so recently made available that it arrived 2 days before our trip and we elected to ditch the Lonely Planet for the Bradt.The first 80 pages provides an informative guide - the background, history, and nature of the Seychelles as a visitor would want to know before arriving. The Carpin book covers most of the background better in terms of history and folklore (not to mention many, many beautiful pictures), but Mair/Beckley covers practicalities and resources (transportation, contacts, sport, shopping, etc.) much more thoroughly. (n.b. Carpin spent a number of years living there whereas Mair is a frequent visitor.)As with most guidebooks to the Seychelles, the focus here is mainly on the 3 large inner islands - Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue - and again, the practicalities covered by this guide is unmatched by any of the others that we researched. Good maps, ferry schedules (current as of 2005), thorough reviews and contact information (including web) of many hotels and restaurants, and descriptions of shopping which, in an area that is somewhat resource challenged like the Seychelles, is an invaluable resource. (As we were sailing/self boarding, we were much more reliant on whatever resources/people we could pry information on where to find things as simple as dish soap or soy sauce. If you are going resort/package, as it seems most visitors do, this may be less an issue for you.)Mair's road-by-road descriptions of downtown Victoria give you just about a shop-by-shop mental picture of driving/walking the smallest capital city in the world. Again, another reason why we pulled this book out time and time again on our trip. For car renters/day trippers, she gives an excellent point-to-point description for exploring Mahé and Praslin (the only two island that you can drive on anyways) on your own. Although Mahé is the largest island, and most often the largest and most central focus in many guide books, there is plenty of attention paid to Praslin and La Digue and more than sufficient practical information - including getting to and exploring the Valée de Mai and Anse Source d'Argent - to make this your primary guide to visiting those islands as well.When it comes to the other inner islands (Silhouette, North, Curieuse, Aride, Cocos, Cousin, Cousine, Felicite, Bird, etc...) there's about 25 pages devoted to information about these wonderful spots, getting there, accommodations, and other necessities (if any - the islands that have facilities tend to be single-resort type). For most Seychelles visitors, unless some of these resorts are your destination, getting to these islands may be more of a day trip from your base accomodation so there is sufficient advice and information provided here. For folks sailing these isles, the information here is useful in determinine what is worth visiting (well, everything actually, but some are private and do not allow you to land) but of course you're going to need more information on harbors, anchorages and such. For that, we relied on the Pilote Cótier guide ([...]) kindly provided by our charter in the Seychelles.Although we did not visit the outer islands, there are another 10 pages on most of the outer islands and 12 on Aldabra alone. Despite these places being generally less accessible, these notes should inspire you to a second, third, or so on visit should you have the means to return to the Seychelles. Again, good practicalities, although here I'd say the Carpin book does just as well and also has a number of spectacular photos of these areas. There are 8 full-color pages of photos in the Mair/Beckley book that should further inspire you to the beauty of this rare, delicate place.Finally, a note about snorkeling and scuba-diving. Besides highly recommending it, if you intend to learn more before arriving, the Carpin book has a fairly good section in the back detailing the major dive sites which the Mair book does not. I believe that much of the information here originally comes from the excellent out of print Pisces Guide written by Lawson Wood. This isn't required of course - dive resorts tend to pre-plan the daily dive spots based on conditions, guest abilities, likelyhood of good marine life, etc. - but we found it helpful to know more about the locations that we were diving. Even if you are planning on doing a lot of snorkeling, I also recommend picking up the Indian Ocean Reef Guide by Debelius (expensive, but worth it) which will help you identify many many new sea creatures and corals that you will see on your trip to the Seychelles.

This was the first Bradt Guidebook I have ever purchased, and I was delighted to have discovered it. It definitely is the most complete guidebook Seychelles to date that I have found! The website lists all the series they have done, and I have to say they have been under rated and hard to find so far; and seem to cover more of the exotic locations that other publications.I highly recommend it!

As a person beginning my law career I found this book very helpful in helping me to think about the way my faith and my vocation intersect. I had been wrestling with what it meant to be a Christian lawyer and heard Tim Keller recommend this book in a recording where he was discussing this very question. I immediately looked up this book and purchased it. It was a great read and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get a perspective on law that is often left out of academia.

I love this book, it is for school but for personal use as well.

Good book, pleasant to read.

I love having this book as a kindle edition. I have the kindle app on my iPhone and turn on the "voice over" feature. I listen to the book while driving and working around the house. As for the book itself, it is required for my class. It is essentially a collection of essays on the theories of thought for law. I really don't care for the book. I would just rather know the facts about law and go on. The book is a little hard for me to understand.

Boring textbook.

Western Law owes much to Christianity. American Law in particular, owes much to Christianity, since the Bible played a very important role in the foundation.Marci Hamilton's article on "The Calvinist Paradoz of Distrust, Hope at the Constitutional Convention" is particularly clear on this point. The Declaration of Independence speaks about nature and nature's God as the foundations of liberal constitucional government.I wonder how America would be like, it its Constitution had been based on the "self-evident truth" that "all man are the result of a meaningless, purposeless and pointless evolutionary process of random mutations and natural selection, and so they have no self and no rights".One of the points that needs to be made by Christian legal scholars, time and again, is the special dignity of human beings, against its materialistic, naturalistic, neo-darwinistic detractors. Alschuler points out the excessive influence of the "nasty" Oliver Wendel Holmes in American Law. In fact, influenced by the dominant naturalistic paradigms of poswitivistic scientism, O.W. Holmes once said (as quoted by Alschuler): "I see no reason for attributing to man a significance different in kind from that which belongs to a baboon or a grain of sand." Well, as a christian I see at least one substantial reason not to do so: Man (male and female) was created in the Image of God, as a rational and moral being, with free will and responsability. From this perspective, Man has nothing to do with baboons or grains of sand. Not even with chimps, as they are trying to make us belief with that "scientific myth" of 98,5% DNA homology.Because of Man's sin, God himself assumed the image of Man, through Jesus Christ, and became the advocate that payed, through His life and physical ressurection, the penalty due for our sin. Thus created and redeemed, Man is incapable of being understood by means of naturalistic reduction.Another point worth making is that of "Law as moral design", not just a random aggregate of adaptive strategies of "our" "selfish genes" (Richard Dawkins)or a kind of purposeless "self-organization of complex systems" (Stuart Kauffmann). As the dicta of Oliver Wendell Holmes about Man, baboons and grains of sand goes to show, Philip Johnson may have a point after all, with his seminal book "Darwin on Trial", when he warns against the ideological agenda behind the "scientific myth" of "particles-to-people evolution".In fact, it is this ideological agenda, and not so much Holmes' nastyness, that has taken over a significant part of american legal scholarship, christian scholars notwithstanding. Christian legal scholarship, it seems to me, has no choice but to debunk naturalistic and darwinian accounts of the law, and to start from creationist and intelligent design assumptions. Science shouldn't be a christian's final authority, since "science" per se doesn't exist apart from basic assumptions (v.g. teism, deism, naturalism, uniformitarianism, catastrophism). However, thanks to the works of William Dembski, Michael Behe, Phillip Johnson, Werner Gitt, Jonathan Wells, Michael Denton, etc., it is becomming much easier to dismiss evolutionary arguments on purely scientific terms. Besides, darwinists have never proven their case with preponderance of evidence, much less beyond reasonable doubt.As you suggest in your article, christian assumptions are far from giving us imediate answers to legal the questions and hard cases we have to deal with, such as abortion, homosexual marriage, freedom of expression, progressive taxation, redistribution, public policies, etc. I couldn't agree more. I spend a large part of my time trying to convince my fellow christian believers that that is in fact the case.These assumptions may not even direct us christians to the adoption of a specific natural law theory, like those of man such as Augustin, Aquinas, Blackstone or John Finnis. Christian scholarship is compatible with adhering to different lines of legal theory. Only intolerant christianity would suggest otherwise.Personally, I must say that I am very confortable with a liberal contractarian tradition building on names such as John Locke, John Rawls, Thomas Scanlon Jr. and Brian Barry (although, like Michael McConnell, I tend to favour a greater inclusion of religious discourse qua tale in the public sphere. This is the true liberal tradition that has its roots in the Protestant Reformation. Like McConnel, I find comprehensive liberalism disturbing.But I also enjoy reading and learning from legal theory schools such as CLS, Critical Race Theory, Feminist Jurisprudence, Civil Republicanism, Communitarianism, Law and Literature, Law and Economics, Law and Music, and so on. As the Apostle Paul suggested, I try to examine all schools of thought and retain that which is good. I think this collection of articles does just that.Christian assumptions are still important though. In international law, for instance, it has become particularly clear to me that anti-mataphysical, naturalistic, darwinistic assumptions have reinforced positivism, statism, realism and pragmatism in the XIX and XX centuries.Legal theory is not value neutral, and assumptions (either overt or covert) do in fact play an important role. All strands of legal theory struggle with sinful elements. But some are more openly anti-God and more prone to do evil than others, since they degrade human beings. As William Stuntz says, in his review of this book for Harvard Law Review, "[i]t is worth getting the law right, and getting the law right may require getting the antecedent theory right".
