As a person beginning my law career I found this book very helpful in helping me to think about the way my faith and my vocation intersect. I had been wrestling with what it meant to be a Christian lawyer and heard Tim Keller recommend this book in a recording where he was discussing this very question. I immediately looked up this book and purchased it. It was a great read and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get a perspective on law that is often left out of academia.

I love this book, it is for school but for personal use as well.

Good book, pleasant to read.

I love having this book as a kindle edition. I have the kindle app on my iPhone and turn on the "voice over" feature. I listen to the book while driving and working around the house. As for the book itself, it is required for my class. It is essentially a collection of essays on the theories of thought for law. I really don't care for the book. I would just rather know the facts about law and go on. The book is a little hard for me to understand.

Boring textbook.

Western Law owes much to Christianity. American Law in particular, owes much to Christianity, since the Bible played a very important role in the foundation.Marci Hamilton's article on "The Calvinist Paradoz of Distrust, Hope at the Constitutional Convention" is particularly clear on this point. The Declaration of Independence speaks about nature and nature's God as the foundations of liberal constitucional government.I wonder how America would be like, it its Constitution had been based on the "self-evident truth" that "all man are the result of a meaningless, purposeless and pointless evolutionary process of random mutations and natural selection, and so they have no self and no rights".One of the points that needs to be made by Christian legal scholars, time and again, is the special dignity of human beings, against its materialistic, naturalistic, neo-darwinistic detractors. Alschuler points out the excessive influence of the "nasty" Oliver Wendel Holmes in American Law. In fact, influenced by the dominant naturalistic paradigms of poswitivistic scientism, O.W. Holmes once said (as quoted by Alschuler): "I see no reason for attributing to man a significance different in kind from that which belongs to a baboon or a grain of sand." Well, as a christian I see at least one substantial reason not to do so: Man (male and female) was created in the Image of God, as a rational and moral being, with free will and responsability. From this perspective, Man has nothing to do with baboons or grains of sand. Not even with chimps, as they are trying to make us belief with that "scientific myth" of 98,5% DNA homology.Because of Man's sin, God himself assumed the image of Man, through Jesus Christ, and became the advocate that payed, through His life and physical ressurection, the penalty due for our sin. Thus created and redeemed, Man is incapable of being understood by means of naturalistic reduction.Another point worth making is that of "Law as moral design", not just a random aggregate of adaptive strategies of "our" "selfish genes" (Richard Dawkins)or a kind of purposeless "self-organization of complex systems" (Stuart Kauffmann). As the dicta of Oliver Wendell Holmes about Man, baboons and grains of sand goes to show, Philip Johnson may have a point after all, with his seminal book "Darwin on Trial", when he warns against the ideological agenda behind the "scientific myth" of "particles-to-people evolution".In fact, it is this ideological agenda, and not so much Holmes' nastyness, that has taken over a significant part of american legal scholarship, christian scholars notwithstanding. Christian legal scholarship, it seems to me, has no choice but to debunk naturalistic and darwinian accounts of the law, and to start from creationist and intelligent design assumptions. Science shouldn't be a christian's final authority, since "science" per se doesn't exist apart from basic assumptions (v.g. teism, deism, naturalism, uniformitarianism, catastrophism). However, thanks to the works of William Dembski, Michael Behe, Phillip Johnson, Werner Gitt, Jonathan Wells, Michael Denton, etc., it is becomming much easier to dismiss evolutionary arguments on purely scientific terms. Besides, darwinists have never proven their case with preponderance of evidence, much less beyond reasonable doubt.As you suggest in your article, christian assumptions are far from giving us imediate answers to legal the questions and hard cases we have to deal with, such as abortion, homosexual marriage, freedom of expression, progressive taxation, redistribution, public policies, etc. I couldn't agree more. I spend a large part of my time trying to convince my fellow christian believers that that is in fact the case.These assumptions may not even direct us christians to the adoption of a specific natural law theory, like those of man such as Augustin, Aquinas, Blackstone or John Finnis. Christian scholarship is compatible with adhering to different lines of legal theory. Only intolerant christianity would suggest otherwise.Personally, I must say that I am very confortable with a liberal contractarian tradition building on names such as John Locke, John Rawls, Thomas Scanlon Jr. and Brian Barry (although, like Michael McConnell, I tend to favour a greater inclusion of religious discourse qua tale in the public sphere. This is the true liberal tradition that has its roots in the Protestant Reformation. Like McConnel, I find comprehensive liberalism disturbing.But I also enjoy reading and learning from legal theory schools such as CLS, Critical Race Theory, Feminist Jurisprudence, Civil Republicanism, Communitarianism, Law and Literature, Law and Economics, Law and Music, and so on. As the Apostle Paul suggested, I try to examine all schools of thought and retain that which is good. I think this collection of articles does just that.Christian assumptions are still important though. In international law, for instance, it has become particularly clear to me that anti-mataphysical, naturalistic, darwinistic assumptions have reinforced positivism, statism, realism and pragmatism in the XIX and XX centuries.Legal theory is not value neutral, and assumptions (either overt or covert) do in fact play an important role. All strands of legal theory struggle with sinful elements. But some are more openly anti-God and more prone to do evil than others, since they degrade human beings. As William Stuntz says, in his review of this book for Harvard Law Review, "[i]t is worth getting the law right, and getting the law right may require getting the antecedent theory right".

Her jokes weren't that funny and the constant foot notes that she read throws the book totally off. Would not recommend.

While this book had some very funny and touching moments, it was, for the most part a platform for the author to spout her personal agenda[s] and political views and scold the reader for not being open minded (code for "see it my way or be cussed out"). As a rule, I would like entertainers to entertain. If you have a point of view, or something you feel passionate about, fine. If your a comedian, help me see it by making it funny in some way. Don't go on and on about how it's your book and F-the reader if they don't like it. If a reader wants to hear long, drawn out...pontifications...on some personal agenda or political views this is the book for you. Personally, I would got to the established sources for that to get my fill rather than a book that I was hoping to make me laugh a lot more than it did. All in all, for me, a very disappointing read. The author, in my opinion, is extremely talented actor and stand-up and should probably see writing as a form of personal therapy than entertainment

It is a funny book, with lots of personal humor. However, I found myself getting tired of her off the wall, in your face writing about 1/2 way through the book. Definitely some great portions but not a fan of all of it.

She wrote this book mad at her mom and I think she is going to regret what she wrote in the future. I don't think it's fun for the reader to be middle of mom rant. I love her show but this book dragged and was not funny.

I love Amy's stand-up, tv show and movie and I guess I expected more from this book. For the most part, the stories were not funny and the writing was mediocre. I've read a lot of female comedian memoirs (e.g. Chelsea Handler, Ken Kirkman, Sarah Colonna, Kathy Griffin, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, etc.) I would recommend any of those authors over Amy.

Thought it was a waste of time. Stories of humiliation. I was embarrassed for her.

Light read, funny, interesting depiction of Amy's life and career. If she truly wrote this, I'd almost argue that her writing is even wittier than her standup.

I'd watched some Amy interviews where she seems to be a little more endearing and gentle and kind, so I gave her book a whirl. The first chapter is called "An open letter to my vagina," which gives you an indicator of what to expect. A lot of gross stories told not for any reason-- you could argue that they're for humor, but there are much better ways to be funny. Still, she bares all, and shares some encouraging, honest stories that are good for all to read and know.

Very pleased, this book is hard to find.

I have used this book before, but lost my copy -- so had to get a new copy. Good reference for natural healing.

Book arrived ahead of schedule and is in very good condition.Is hardbacked. Page order is the same as in the paperback version and I was able to continue reading from where I left off.Am very satisfied with the book!

I have attended Kris Hadlock's presentation in AJAXWORLD Conference & EXPO last week. I am glad I did because I really wanted to learn how to write reusable JavaScript libraries in my projects. His book is all about AJAX but engineering side of it. Why? because I found not many books out there show you how to capture server errors and record them for debugging and improvement in your project. Not many books show you how to implement the back-end for your frond-end applications. Not many books give you real-world examples. "Ajax for Web Application Developers" does all for you. It's very simple to understand Kris' codings and explanations because his book is neatly coded and implemented the coding standards.SOURCE CODES: Demonstrated examples in the book can be downloaded from the publisher. All you need to do is to create an account.I personally have many AJAX books in my library but specifically liked "Ajax for Web Application Developers".I strongly recommend it to those who are willing to learn in an easy way to create reusable JavaScript object-oriented libraries and understand the AJAX object methodology.Good luck

As a fairly new web developer this book is not great for learning. It is the textbook for my Ajax class and I wish they had chosen another one. If you are an experienced programmer then this book might be a good choice, but I can't say for sure as I am not very experienced.

I've been working on the Web for a handful+ of years, but save for a brief stunt back in the late 90s, I haven't had much use for JavaScript (with the exception of a few one/two-liners). As such, I came to this book as a new-comer to Ajax.I also like to learn by way of example, instead of explanation, so code examples are a big plus, if not a requirement.Unfortunately, from this background, my expectations for this book appear to have been set too high. Granted, it may be because of the lack of full examples in the book (and that they are not available online - more on this momentarily). In fact, that's probably the only thing holding me back.There's minor errors in code in the book as well, but that's to be expected, and a second edition/printing will fix most of these. By itself, this shouldn't hold you back.But as a beginner's resource, I'm not sure that this is the book you'd want to pick up. I actually recommend that you take a look elsewhere, particularly online, for how to start with Ajax.Once you've got the basics down, then you can take a look at this book, as it does provide from very good tips as far as keeping your code standardized.Had I been the first reviewer, I would have given this book four stars. Since I was not, I have decided to give it three. This is because I feel it's a good book, but not for as large an audience as you may think, based upon reading the description. Again, I feel that this book is more for if you've worked with Ajax, but not in a standard/formal way.Regarding the code I mentioned above, while it's true that there is a zip file of the code files, I don't feel that it truly contains all of the necessary code. Again, keep in mind that I like to work with full code examples, especially when we're talking about JavaScript (since code is sometimes required in the HEAD, and sometimes not).I have another Developer's Library book, PHP and MySQL Web Development (the Third Edition), so that's part of why my expectations may have been so high. But, I wasn't expecting the amount of full code that the ColdFusion MX 7 'blue books' provides. ;)Even if you don't have a working application, let me see where you, the author, are at the end of a section or chapter, even if we're just creating one new file and/or adding code to an existing/new file. This goes for whether you write online or not. If there's code in a chapter, and it's not a snippet, than I'd like to see how the full document's code looks.I don't care that it's not a complete application, I just may want to have your code on screen while I read through the chapter.

First, let me agree with the previous reviewer who noted that this isn't an AJAX book for beginners. It isn't. I don't think anyone claimed that it was. It's a book for web application developers seeking to incorporate AJAX technology into web applications. I wouldn't expect a book with that kind of scope to be appropriate for beginners. This one certainly isn't, and I'm glad, having read enough beginner AJAX books that go over what an XmlHttpRequest is and explain some of the commonly used "stupid JavaScript tricks", dropping the names of popular frameworks and toolkits along the way without really supplying much information about them.Having said that: I've been seeking a book with the scope of this book for quite a while now. Not since Nicholas Zakas' book "Professional JavaScript for Web Developers" (which I still highly recommend) has this kind of in-depth coverage of the inner workings of AJAX been offered up. Zakas' book (only two years old) went into great detail about using Javascript to do all the cool things we now know as "AJAX"... without once using the word. (Two years ago the word "AJAX" hadn't reached its present buzzword saturation level, if it had been used much at all.)Hadlock revisits the technology now that AJAX and the various toolkits and frameworks supporting it (Dojo, script.aculo.us, Google Web Toolkit, etc.) have become commonplace. He doesn't provide a tutorial on how to use a particular toolkit or framework; instead, he explains how you can write an "engine" of your own. He starts with a good intro to AJAX, including explanations of how to use both XML and JSON in the response, moves on to the basic principles of object-oriented JavaScript, and then provides examples of reusable JavaScript components to include in your own JavaScript/AJAX engine. Whether you're seeking to reinvent the wheel and write such an engine yourself, or just have a hankering to understand how a toolkit like Dojo or script.aculo.us is constructed, this is great information. Where Zakas' book was an all-encompassing head first dive into deep JavaScript, this book is a briefer but still quite thorough tutorial that gets to the critical information quickly.The book also includes useful chapters on security and best practices.Where the book is lacking is in its coverage of server-side interaction. While it concentrates on PHP, it provides some examples of connecting to ASP.NET and ColdFusion, but... there's no mention whatsoever about Java/J2EE. (Ryan Asleson's "Pro Ajax and Java Frameworks" does provide that very sort of information, covering Struts, Spring, and JSF.) Still, where this book shines is in its in-depth explanation of how JavaScript/AJAX toolkits work and how you build your own or extend existing ones. This is still the only book I've seen that even attempts to do that.
