I let my son read this book to his brothers and the first thought that came to their minds was Jumanji! Only, instead of a video game appearing on an old tv screen, this story has a magical wilderness app on a phone that took four unsuspecting kids to an outside adventure. Josh, Tyler, Melisa and Katie we're magically teleported to the forest and had to do something to survive Moose Lake. This was an interesting read. My boys collectively asked me to (jokingly) download the particular app mentioned in the book so they could join in the fun too with Josh and company. My littlest one was a little serious though. When I asked him about the characters in the story, he said he liked Melisa because even of she was a know-it-all, she seemed like a good girl. Both my two older sons liked Tyler because he was funny and and seemed like a caring friend. My kids loved that the book also featured about wildlife and nature. Reading a fun story while learning is a big plus to them. Now they can't wait to read the next book adventure that awaits the new four friends.

Four middle school students who couldn’t be more different find themselves stuck together and forced to learn how to survive in the wild in author Karl Steam’s Surviving Moose Lake, the first in the seven book Kids vs. Nature series. Here’s the synopsis:Getting placed in a lousy group for a class assignment is bad enough, but it’s a thousand times worse when you get stranded in the wilderness with that group. Will Josh and three of his sixth-grade classmates have the skills they need to survive the wilderness? Will they all make it home alive?Surviving Moose Lake is the first book of the Kids vs. Nature series. It provides an entertaining mixture of danger, adventure, factual information, and life lessons that are best learned in the great outdoors—far away from adults and school classrooms. The book reminded me of a middle grade version of Jumanji, with an educational, learn survival skills element to it. Middle school kids will find themselves able to relate to these characters with ease. Each student brings a specific part of the school social hierarchy to life, and the book does a great job of breaking down the barriers that separate these students in an effort to survive together. The mix of realistic and animated photos with the developing plot made the story flow smoothly, creating an engaging yet fast read that middle school children will enjoy. The author also did a great job of including educational facts about survival and the animals they encounter in the story at the end of the book, providing an interesting way to get reader’s attention and educate at the same time.Overall the first book in this series began strong. It drew the reader in quickly, and by books end the promise of a growing series of stories makes this a truly marvelous series that parents will want to get their children. If you haven’t yet be sure to pick up your copy of Surviving Moose Lake by Karl Steam today!

Wow - hard to believe the great reviews.... yes, the story has promise... but it's really never delivered. Really liked the title and had high hopes for this. Targeted toward middle schoolers, the writing is predictable and not of high level. Did not like the ending at all. Might be more suitable for struggling readers...? I DID like the extra information which gave out helpful hints on being in the woods, but sadly, do not recommend this.

Surviving Moose Lake was quite the adventure. I felt like Josh, the main character, was talking directly to me. Josh shares what he is thinking, feeling, smelling, and touching. Josh was so descriptive in what he was telling me that I felt made like I was on the adventure too. Josh and three other classmates work together to survive in the wilderness, as they strive to complete a mission. Some basic survival skills are figured out, thus the reader learns these as well. Good things to know, just in case! I see there are more interesting facts and survival information at the back of the book. Thanks Karl Steam.

Author Karl Steam writes in a wonderful style that guarantees the attention of young minds. If you ever wanted to bond even more with your children or grandchildren, this would be a lovely read to share with them. I read it with my grand kids and they loved it.It seems to me that this book has been created with a lot of love and joy and it’s apparent that the author really enjoys creating such wonderful stories. We’ll be looking forward to seeing what’s coming next. Five stars from us. Well done Karl!

I was almost expecting Dragons to aooear when the story took off, but I think it was just as interesting sticking to nature.Nice short read, and I definitely recommend it for the suggested age group for the book.

I honestly enjoyed it I do wish it were longer but one does not simply add two hundred pages to a book

Loved this book!!! Read this book aloud with my 6 1/2 year old. She loved it! Lots of interesting facts pictures are great! Highly recommend. Starting book 2 tomorrow nite!

As a teacher, I find that Rawl's story inspires me to keep my eyes open to everything going on around me. Teens can be great at hiding their private struggles. This book flows easily and is a quick read. As a narrative, the writing could use some work. Many chapters include details that strike me as mundane and unnecessary, particularly the extensive adjectives used to describe things relatively unimportant to the overall story, however, if you go in knowing that not every detail matters, it's still an easy read and well worth the time.

Before I begin, though, let me deal with the elephant. I, being a fairly cynical dude, have no qualms about beating up on the work of an HIV-positive person, if it's warranted. Truth is, though, it really isn't warranted.I avoid memoirs about depression, bullying, addiction, et cetera, because my experience has been that they tend to be not very good. Too often, these memoirs wallow in their own misery, manipulating the reader into feeling sympathy for the author rather than any kind of genuine empathy. The reader may feel bad for the struggles of the author, but that's it. The reader does not connect with the author.Rawl avoids this by telling her story in a way that is personal but also universal. The book starts off with a section describing Rawl's childhood, and immediately subverted my expectations. Rather than spend page after page discussing the struggles and complications of being born with HIV, Rawl talks about her daily medicinal cocktail as casually as she talks about her excitement at entering middle school, her meeting her best friend, her practicing for cheerleading tryouts, her competing in beauty pageants. Rawl draws the reader in with her enthusiasm. She doesn't dwell on her HIV status, rather making it just another part of her life. And she is immediately likable. She's an upbeat kid whose attitude you can't help but smile at.When the shift comes, when her best friend decides to tell everyone that Rawl is HIV-positive, the book strikes an unusual balance between the ensuing problems and the notion that life goes on. She's got problems on her hands, not only from her peers but also from the adults that are supposed to be educating her, but she's also got other things going on, the typical ups and downs of a teenager's life. In fact, Rawl does not treat her HIV status as something special, as something for which she is being bullied. Her HIV is secondary to the fact that she is being bullied, by students and educators alike. And it's here that I think so many children and teenagers can really connect with the book. Kids can be phenomenally cruel, but I don't believe kids are inherently malicious. Some of them are, certainly, but cruelty is far too often a learned behavior. If kids are not taught how to be decent--and by taught, I mean shown by adults--then they will often be cruel because they don't know any better. They often don't realize how cruel they're being or even that they are being cruel. And all you have to do to see where this comes from is log onto Facebook and take a look at how many adults have absolutely no sense of decency or empathy. Adults who dislike immigrants because they're immigrants teach kids to dislike immigrants because they're immigrants. Adults who dislike gays because they're gay teach kids to dislike gays because they're gay.Rawl beautifully illustrates this miseducation by showing how first the guidance counselor and then the entire school administration failed her. First they ignored her problems, and then they acted like she was the problem. How could the girl possibly win in that situation? How could any student? When the administration blames a student for his or her problems, what are the other students to think? "The adults don't like her, so we're not going to like her. They mistreat her, so we're going to mistreat her." That administration had an opportunity, a teachable moment, and they squandered it. They couldn't be bothered. As an educator myself, that section really upset me. I was actually shaking, I was so angry. That school's treatment of Rawl was an abject failure on every conceivable level.Contrast that with Rawl's next school. Before she even meets with the administration, they have taken steps to educate themselves, and subsequently, they take steps to educate the student body. That's what education is supposed to do: with all due respect to the Core, education is about teaching students to be decent, about viewing issues from multiple angles, about seeing matters from different perspectives, about understanding where someone else is coming from. Learning facts, even learning to think, is not enough if at the end of the day, you cannot see that disliking someone for something so arbitrary as their race or their gender or their religion is utterly ridiculous. You don't have to agree with someone to be decent to that person. And lest we believe that it's all sun and roses for Rawl, she does try to kill herself by overdose. Even after her life straightens out, the pain of what she went through at middle school remains, and she tries to escape it. Fortunately, she fails, and what she experiences afterwards helps her to forgive the people who failed her, the people who hurt her, because that's the only thing you can do. You cannot change the past, you cannot go back and change other people, but you can forgive the people who have hurt you and you can move on.Rawl becomes a voice for students who feel they don't have a voice, and time after time, she wonders what she has to say, why anyone would care to listen to her story. The answer is simple: it's because millions of kids go through the same thing every day, different faces but the same story, and as Rawl points out, way too many of them don't make it.Paige Rawl's Positive is a five out of five. I cannot remember the last time I was this emotionally affected by a memoir. When I finished, my immediate thought was that every student needs to read this book, every educator needs to read this book, every parent needs to read this book. Go out and get yourself a copy. If you can't find a copy or you can't afford one, send me a message. I will you buy you a copy.

As a grandmother whose 12 year old adopted grandson was recently diagnosed with HIV, Paige's book was extremely important reading. She clearly spelled out the various instances of bullying she experienced, and how/why her own reaction to these changed over time. It's obvious to me that kids with HIV have to grow up very quickly - probably too quickly - in terms of understanding the societal stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS. And how they do this without developing self-hatred - just as gay children have had to do - is a horrific challenge. Paige spells all this out so beautifully - how she went from her darkest days to sunshine. I'm so grateful to her for putting this experience into words for the world.

This book is fantastic. I could not put it down and read it all within a day. Paige has been through so much in her short life and has blossomed into such an amazing person. There are parts in the book that will make you so angry at how our would views anyone different. Through all the bullying and heart break Paige has endured over the years, she shows us how you can be bigger then your enemies and your own fears and make something of yourself no matter the circumstances. I have recommended this book to everyone I know, especially families with children as they would benefit from reading another young adults journey through hardships. Love the book and love the Author! If I could give it 10 stars I would!

Anyone who has children in middle school or above, or who works with children, must read this book. We all know that bullying exists, but do we really take the time to think about the long term effect it has on the victims? Paige Rawl has been there and is bravely and poignantly sharing her story, striving to make a difference in this complicated world we live in. She shows how searching for the positive side makes us better people and helps us rise above those who suffer from fear of all that is different and unknown. Paige Rawl is my new hero and an inspiration for all.

I've never understood meanness of any kind. This poor family having to endure worse than meanness, I don't know the word to use... This young woman lets you know how it feels like to be the target of adult & peer bullying. I have a new Mom hero, right up there with Ryan White`s Mom. This is a fast read, thank goodness, and you find your self cheering for both. I'm so glad Paige wrote this, people need to understand that words DO hurt, they Do devastate , they DO !

Wonderful book - great story illustrating how one girl not only stood up to her bullies - but created a beautiful life doing so. I have purchased several of these books to share with both the teens in my life & the little free libraries throughout my neighborhood.*the last chapter is my favorite portion

Such an strong young woman with the most important message. A must read for parents, teachers, and anyone who works with young adults.

This is a wonderful little set of Golden Books. My 3 year is really enjoying it. We have quite a few Golden Books already. Fortunately, we only had one duplicate (I am Bunny), but that is okay, because the duplicate is actually in a board book version. My 10 month is now enjoying that. I grew up being read, and reading Golden Books. I love the nostalgia, and they are great value. The set contains the following 12 books: The Poky Little Puppy, I Can Fly, The Sailor Dog, Scuffy the Tugboat, Wonders of Nature, The Three Bears, A Day at the Seashore, The Blue Book of Fairy Tales, I’m a Truck, I Am a Bunny, The Whispering Rabbit, and Katie the Kitten. They come packaged in a nice cardboard case, and include a poster with history each Little Golden Book contained in the set. I highly recommend this set. It is a great value, and the selection is great. If you love reading to your kids this will be a nice addition to your book collection.

This is a great collection of little golden books! The Collection came in great condition! I am saving them for my collection to give to my future grandchild. My set includes: Katie the Kitten, The Poky Little Puppy, I am Bunny, The Three Bears, I Can Fly, The Sailor Dog, I'm a Truck, The Blue Book of Fairy Tales, A Day at the Shore, Scruffy the Tugboat, Wonders of Nature and The Whispering Rabbit.

Good books, but very thin pages - not the quality I was expecting and remembered from my childhood. I will look in used book stores or goodwill for older printings of these going forward.

I love these books so much! I remember a lot of these from when I was little, and now I'm so happy to share them with my boys. The stories are long enough to keep my 3.5 year old engaged, and the pictures are colorful and intricate enough to keep my 22 month looking while I read. I cannot say enough how glad I am that I got these books! 😍😁📖

I received the books last night. It was already late past my kids bedtime (4 and 6 years old) and planned on reading just one of these. I wasn’t sure how my 6 year old would be interested and at first he wasn’t and complained but then i started reading one .. and he enjoyed it so much he kept giving me book after book to read for him. He loved the “Nature” one . These are sweet sweet books . We read three last night even though he wanted more. My 4 year old unfortunately doesn’t listen to any book I read or at least he is listening and playing simultaneously. He won’t sit focused.

The recipient of this 75th anniversary collection of Golden Books was celebrating a birthday much younger than 75. However, he looks forward to receiving treasures such as this. Some of the titles he remembered from his childhood; and his children had similar memories. Golden Books have been a "class act" throughout their 75 years in business. It is a gift that will treasured by the members of our family for another 75 years!

I oedered this set of books as a Birthday gift for my grandchildren. The company shipped it promptly to California. I ordered it specifically for the book Katie the Kitten as it had been read frequently to our daughter when she was small. I’m happy to have that book and the others for her children. Our grandson found new favorites in the box.

Though some of them I’ve never heard of, it’s a great and cute collection! You even get a free poster with it! I like reading them to my nephew. If you want this set, Amazon is probably the best place to get it because I saw other sites and stores actually selling it for $50+ and that’s crazy.

It's quite a story from a bygone era. He was a unique person. Times are different now days and there will never be another hunter like this guy. At least i hope not!

Ben Lilly was a frontier character who, for some reason, is nearly unknown today. I remember reading an article about him in the old Argosy Magazine when I was a boy, some sixty years ago. Fascinating. If you like Crockett and Boone you'll love Lilly and this book.

A very interesting book about a famous late-19th and early-20th century cougar and bear hunter, whom I had heard only 'bits-and-pieces' about from other hunting books, as being a near-legend, back in the early 1950's when I was in grammar-school. I enjoyed this book.

nobody hunts like that any more and he didn't have a tree blind

Book arrived in great shape but the book is nothing but padding, everything but information on B. L.

Curious character, thoughts and facts somewhat random. It is a quick read and worth the time.

a little slow in spots

a must read for all hunters trappers

I enjoyed reading Anthony Everitt's book on Hadrian. Like many other comments here, I too felt he spent too much time describing the political world unto which Hadrian emerges. Frankly, the first half of the book where he does this was on the boring side, and I almost set it aside.Thankfully, the second half where Everitt focuses on Hadrian is much more interesting, particularly the themes of Hadrian's (homo)sexuality and Antinous and how that was thought of in ancient Greece, ancient Rome, and today, as well as Hadrian's love and support of Greek culture and his "Grand Tour" of the Roman empire.I appreciated his introduction and afterwards where he explained particular problems regarding the reliability of ancient sources on Hadrian. I also liked that Everitt integrated the sources into the text, without the use of footnotes. (Is ANYTHING more annoying than to constantly have to flip back and forth??)One concern I had was that the narrative almost seemed too smooth, especially given what Everitt's says about the quality of the sources. He does occasionally go through variations of what happened in particular instances based on the different primary sources, it's just that I wondered about the validity of the rest.Additionally, I would have appreciated much much more perspective on how Hadrian is perceived today and in subsequent years, or how Hadrian affected the course of Rome. The final chapter does this but it was way way too short.I'd like to give the book a 5 because Everitt is such a smooth and polished writer and historian, but, given the above, a 4 fits better.

This is a very well documented biography of the Emperor Hadrian based on historical writings of his contemporaries and later historians. The author is careful not to make too many assumptions about Hadrian's personality, private life and habits and focuses primarily on his reign as emperor and military exploits. Everitt does have a chapter on his relationship with Antinous, the young Bithynian whom Hadrian was so enamored with that he made him into a god after his mysterious death. He explores his relationship with his contemporaries, his soldiers, and his officers more in depth than he does Hadrian's family, assuming this is because of lack of written historical documentation. Everitt also gives an excellent timeline of his travels across the Roman Empire, as well as his methodology for keeping the pax romana rather than using up resources for further expansion. Overall, an excellent book.

A good read, lots of substance........well paced, easy, digestible chapters, with clear text for the casual historian as well as the serious student. The author explores Hadrian as an object of biography, not as a sterile academic 'term paper'. What's really interesting here is the author's quiet allusion to Hadrian as an early example --indeed, likely the original example-- of a world leader at the crossroads of history who questions long held geopolitical assumptions. Like recent past examples (Richard Nixon, Deng Xiaoping, Mikhail Gorbachev), Hadrian looks at the realities of the moment and has the wisdom and courage to see and consider alternatives. In his case, it was the modest retreat of Roman armies to much more defensible, stable borders, but still maintaining the lucrative broad interests of the Roman Empire.....trade routes (the eastern Mediterranean ), key natural resources (Great Britain),friendly allied tribes (present day Spain, Germany), etc. By retreating from the Tigris, Euphrates rivers, moving south of the Danube and west of the Rhine, building a wall across present day southern Scotland, Hadrian help launch a very stable period of economic and social stability across the wider empire that still has implications to this day. During a quiet interlude in the civil wars before the great denouement at Actium (31 BC), Mark Anthony reached the Caspian Sea and present day Baghdad in hopes of overcoming the Armenians and the Parthians......what would the world be the like today if the Romans had remained for a few hundred years? By the way, Anthony had a large contingent of Jewish mercenaries with him at the time.......very tough fighting men for their day.

Another excellent product from Anthony Everitt, although I do have one caveat on this book. There was a seeming paucity of documented information on Hadrian, especially his pre-Emperor years, versus what Mr. Everitt relayed about Augustus and Cicero. This leads to a lot of suppositions which detract only slightly from the overall work. I could honestly say on of the "extars" I gleaned from the book due to the lack of documentation of Hadrian's early life is learning much more about Trajan and his life and times as Emperor. In addition, I did feel that more detail was given in this book to the actual specifics of governing Rome and Roman lifestyle and habits than the readers ever received with the other two biographies.Mr. Everitt has a great way of putting things and I find myself chuckling often through his books. One is very much drawn in and feels like the character in the book has been known for years. I can actually envision some of the things happening. As always, I remain a fan of Mr. Everitt's work. I am willing to purchase any of his writings if on a topic of interest to me.

My boys enjoyed reading this for our unit study on the safari. The photos were amazing and the information included was in a way that captured their interest and didn't bore them. There are many jokes included throughout the book and my boys love to read them over and over and tell them to everyone we meet.

These are awesome books. We have a grandson who is in love with animals, and I credit these books with starting his ability to read. You can't go wrong with these books as a gift. And, they're probably appropriate for kids through grade school. Will buy more!

Given to 5-year old niece as a present. She liked the other elephant book better, a picture book about elephants, at least upon opening the gift. Take note that she doesn't read yet. Her Mom reads to her, so I think this is a save-for-bedtime book.

My 6 year old loves reading the Kids National Geographic books. He loves the photographic images and loves that he learns more about animals. At his age there is plenty of words that he can read alone and when he gets stuck on a word, we work on it! He really enjoys the jokes on the pages and loves retelling them to his brothers! We have almost all of the books and those are his go to books to read in the evenings for school. A must get for the early readers as these books are fun and interesting and informative all at the same time!

National Geographic books are perfect for teaching little ones about the world. I have purchased all of them for my grand-daughter, and they never disappoint, highly recommended for children of all ages.

My kid loves it.

Always love the facts and great pictures in the kids National Geographic's.

My kindergartener loves elephants and is a proficient reader. He loves reading this book and learning new facts about elephants! Glad I got it.
