Interesting and well informed narrative of the 67-70 war in Nigeria.Appears at an interesting time (2017) as the same conflict is now again going on.It is clear that Africa (see South Africa also) is a failed continent.Why do we pretend it is not.

This is a very nice slim treatise on a very disturbing subject, the Biafran War. This is a class ic African conflict where one tribe tries to break free of oppression, taking with it natural wealth, from another controlling tribe and is nearly wiped out with guns, bombs and starvation! The mother country is supported heavily by a European power wanting the oil, the other is supported by few. The outcome is sadly obvious, Biafra loses! Nigeria wins, BP wins!! This book goes in a few pages, deep into the problems of not only Nigeria but of Africa on the whole. The tribal/clan wars that result from the decolonization are frequent and bloody. Usually leaving the strongest but not the wisest in power much to the detriment of everyone except the 1% in charge! The pictures are many and some never seen. I really like this whole series because like the Osprey books, you get a lot of information on subjects at a cheap price. I have several books on Biafra and mercenaries in Africa and am pleased with this book as an addition to my library

This book is a good introduction to a subject that seldom receives attention.

A basic narrative of a war of last resort fated from the beginning to be lost.

I enjoyed this, would give it 3.5 stars if I could. Good photographs and breaks down the politics fairly well. I felt it was a little light on describing equipment, organization and military operations...I was hoping for more nuts and bolts. I love the "Africa @ War" series and wanted to love this volume. It was good but left me a little underwhelmed.

I am a lawyer and have cause from time to time to negotiate with lenders on my clients' behalf. In my opinion, the strategies in this book are quite good. Not all of them will apply to any particular situation, but for each case I would estimate that you will find at least five useful strategies that you can implement directly. It's important to note that you do NOT have to be in the midst of a lawsuit to benefit from the content- the ideas can be used by a borrower to be educated on the law and practical matters to consider when applying for a loan modification, for example; or when negotiating a short sale or a foreclosure remediation matter. Also, I like the way the author has organized the book. Each 'strategy' is essentially a legal theory you can use, with arguments and analysis to back it up, and written in a way that is easy to understand. Overall, this is a good and handy manual for borrowers coming up against the big guys. Well done.

I wish I would have read this book before my foreclosure. I, as many during the financial meltdown, was intentionally cheated by a mortgage banker. I was not able to educate myself on foreclosure, and predatory lending laws, until I was already removed from my home of 20 years. My biggest mistake was not being educated in the foreclosure process. Had I had this book, and an attorney, I believe I would have been successful in not only an intentional misrepresentation claim, but also claims of mortgage fraud and predatory lending. The banks attorney's did not sign their original complaint or their summary judgement motion. Because of bad advice I did not appeal, and that cost me dearly in the long run. It turns out that had I appealed on the issue of an unsigned defective motion, I could have ended up with a free home. That is a simple technicality that I discovered on my own, but without an attorney the judge simply ignored my answers and found for the bank. My example is why every homeowner needs to be educated in the law and the process. More importantly, discuss your case with a competent foreclosure or consumer rights attorney as soon as possible. This book was a very simple read and easy to understand. It only took me a few hours to read. I am from WI as is the author, but I think that no matter were your from this book will give you a good primmer on foreclosure law and the legal process. For the Wisconsin readers I have an update for this book. In December of 2015 the Wisconsin legislature signed a new law called 2015 Wisconsin ACT 120. This law now precludes any claims against mortgage Brokers for oral agreements, or what's called promissory estoppel. Basically they sold out the people of Wisconsin and created what I consider an unconstitutional law. Make sure you get any promises in writing of they are worthless in Wisconsin. If you are not from WI and were cheated by an oral agreement brush up on promissory estoppel to enforce your oral agreement. If your reading this review its probably because some bank has screwed you. The sooner you get help the better. Statutes of limitations are the banks best friend.

I can tell that the author is quite experienced in this topic. She knows her stuff very well. For attorneys who are relatively new to foreclosure law, the advices given by the author in this book is a good reading that puts relevant principles and strategies in a nutshell.In this time of economic crisis, everyone needs to be prepared for the worst that could happen. It is advisable to have the knowledge up your sleeve, so that if unfortunately the time comes you know what to look for and what you can do.

Having never done this type of work before, I sought out some kind of reference to orient me and point me in the right direction. This did just that, and I was able to read the entire book in one evening.Non-attorneys will likely get lost in the legal concepts. For me, the author's description of each legal concept was just enough to jog my memory and have all those cases I read and rules I memorized in law school come rushing back to me. In that sense, for me it was rather invigorating. I could see where it would be confusing or frustrating without that baseline knowledge, though.Kimberly, thank you for taking the time to put this together. I liked this book because it gave me some ideas on where and how I can live.The idea to live in a tiny house is unusual and it can be an interesting decision of some problems: where to live, where to find some money for living and so on.But there is a big but. Living in the tiny house is a compromise. Often you have to live here because you can't live in a big house for some reasons.It seems to me it can be a good idea if you are single or a student. Or something like that.And I want to note you before you get this book: you will not find a lot of pictures here. In truth, here are no suitable pictures. But the book could be much more useful with pictures.That was not a problem for me because I faced this idea for the first time. But if you have studied this subject, I think the reading without illustrations could be uncomfortable for you.So if you need a good introductory book for absolute novices you can purchase this one.

This book is great! It explains how you can live in a tiny space but make it look very nice and elegant. It explains the advantages in living in a small space and how you can come closer to your family! Also that you don't have that many expenses and that it is Eco friendly as well! There are many benefits to living in small house and this book gives a great explanation of this! I definitely recommend this book!

Very basic, brief book which needs editing. In the section of "land," although it was acknowledged that this is the hardest part to find, how about talking about how to deal with land that has plumbing and electricity available. And if not, what to do about that. Several recent news reports indicate that tiny homes are easy to steal when built on wheels. Lots of info could have been included to make this a "complete" guide.

The concept of tiny house living is fantastic, you can save money and produce less waste. It is a very good mentality to downsize rather than buy more things you don't need.

It has some good info for those who have not yet done a lot of research or know where to start. It is pretty good on that level but the writing of the book leaves much to be desired. It's full of grammatical errors, typos and is very unprofessional. Good ideas for beginners but hard to read because of such poor writing.

Very short book, don't waste your time!

I just wanted to see pictures and floor plans but it woudln't let me expand them so I could see them in a larger mode.

I have several guides and picture books on tiny houses...this is the first I have ever found useless and not matching its description

The Cathedral of the World is Forrest Church's final book, and a more perfect summary/tribute could not be imagined. There are new writings, and revisions of old. Dr. Church brings together themes he has explored throughout his career, from American history and the separation of church and state, to unitatian universalist theololgy, to social causes. What makes Dr. Church's writing so brillant is his absolute refusal to be put into a box, and his active avoidance of others doing the same. In a denomination where liberality in religion is often assumed to co-exist with liberality in politics, Dr. Church is quick to point out that being a liberal does not have to mean big government programs. On page 31 we read: "liberal means free from narrow prejudice." And that means from both the right and left of the political spectrum. He allows for the fact that we may agree on social goals, but disagree on how to get there. He doesn't hesitate to point out when we are giving "too convenient and self-flattering an answer" (page 32). Church truly thinks through all his positions, and gives you his reasoning. Pay special attention to the essays describing the histories and original meanings of particular holidays. The book is engaging and convincing in its advocacy for a thinking theology and social program, one that is all-inclusive. Dr. Church will be missed.

Believing he had only a few months left to live, Church wrote what he intended as his final book, Love & Death: My Journey through the Valley of the Shadow, in the spring of 2008. The unexpected success of a new cancer treatment allowed him the time to write the one book he had never managed previously relating his "thoughts on religion, faith and God": Cathedral of the World (p.x). Cathedral includes excerpts or reprints of sermons, essays and speeches from Church's many years in ministry.The text is divided into five "books." The fourth, "Universalism for the Twenty-First Century," is something close to an overview of Church's systematic theology. Along with the third book, "A Liberal Pulpit," these two sections provide readers with an appreciation for what Church will be remembered as for generations to come within the liberal religious community: pastor and theologian. Five brief quotes from this portion of the book follow:*The Commonwealth of God is grounded not in uniformity but mutuality. We are not replicates of one another but related to one another in a single body with many different members, each with a unique gift (p.69).*Death is not a curse to be outwitted no matter the cost. Death is the natural pivot point on which life turns, without which life as we know it could not be (p.93).*I live according to a few simple principles. One I call "nostalgia for the present" (embracing each day as it passes rather than ruining it after it's gone - p.111).*I don't disbelieve in an afterlife; I simply have yet to experience an afterlife, and therefore have little to say concerning one (p.121).Jesus was anything but a biblical literalist. He teaches parable by parable, not by citing chapter and verse, and gets into holy mischief repeatedly for breaking the letter of scripture (p.141).

Forest Church was, without a doubt, one of the leading Unitarian Universalist theologians. This, his ultimate work, is perhaps his best. His writing is easy to read and his insights into Natural Theology have yet to be equaled. A must read for anyone who is looking for spiritual insight.

This is far beyond my expectations. The author explains his point of view with clarity and logic. I found so many of his ideas mirror mine. There is one light, and many windows. Exactly! There is a God and we all see the supreme spirit through our own eyes. I so highly recommend this book.

I read this book on recommendation of a friend as I seek to understand UU thinking and theology. I find I have just as many questions at the end as I did before I started.

My favorite Church book that really sums up his universalism, concisely.

Very good, thoughtful and inspiring book! I would recommend anything written by this man and only wish he were still here to write more wonderful books. An earlier book of his, SO HELP ME GOD: The Founding Fathers and the First Great Battle Over Church and State, was quite a scholarly treatise which gave much insight into a period of our history of which I found I knew so shockingly little!

This was a great summation of the work of one of most renowned theologians of our time!He will be greatly missed but we have this,IMHO, his best work! A must read.

My guess is that some of the negative reviews posted here are from readers who always expect "something to happen". The ironic part is, as with most of Didion's canon, a great deal in fact happens. Just not in the typical, overdramatic fashion of writers like Mailer or Tom Wolfe. These brief snippets of the South are haunting; I could almost feel the humidity and ennui of the citizens rising from the pages. And the California section answers a question I've asked most of my adult life. As a native New Yorker, I could never understand why the West, especially California, always had a sense of loss to it, as if a collective sense of guilt and not-belonging pervaded it. Joan gets this disconnect and gives it life in her spare, well-chosen sentences. Though not as comprehensive or definitive as SLOUCHING TOWARDS BETHLEHEM or THE WHITE ALBUM, it is a wonderful addition to the legacy of Didion. Reading her always seems like talking to an old friend you adore, but will never fully understand.

She did it again. Ms Didion's writing never gets old. This book took me on a journey, albeit one that wasn't always easy. Still, I felt as though I was there with her all the way, simply by reading her beautifully crafted words. What I would give to have thoughts flow from my pen as effortlessly as they seem to from hers. She can capture a moment in time like no other writer out there.

I am a lifelong fan of Joan Didion's work and her pieces here, particularly on the South, are priceless and elegaic. However it doesn't hang tongether as a book and the part on California especially feels residual.

I’ve always found Joan Didion’s writing a mixed bag. While she is an excellent essayist, her fictional work is often dull, self-indulgent, and it’s not her strong suit. But even in her lesser work, she has a very strong ability to invoke vivid imagery. When this is applied to more introspective matters, the result is powerful, engaging, and often moving work that stays with you long after you have finished reading. She doesn’t just let us know about her world, she allows us to get inside her brain and see the world as she sees it.South and West: From A Notebook is her latest work, and it is slightly different from her more recent books. The thin volume contains two pieces: the first, a collection of assembled notes from a road trip through the South in 1970; the second piece compiles notes from an unreleased Rolling Stone article about the Patty Hearst trial. Thus, readers expecting a full, detailed, and well-toned and insightful Didion essays may be disappointed; she presents these two collections seemingly as-is.The first piece, entitled “Notes on the South,” constitutes the bulk of the text. As she and her husband drive through the Southern regions of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, she documents the world around her – everything from tourist traps, small cafes, to swimming pools at cheap motels. She talks to locals ranging from business owners, sports figures, journalists, and beauty salon owners. What she is experiencing is a South that is growing, changing, adapting, and revitalizing itself in a modern, desegregated South. Didion’s writing is so vivid in its description of her travels that one can feel the humidity and the oppressive sultriness that is par for the course every Summer.But there’s a nagging feeling that “Notes On The South” isn’t meant to be a pleasant ride through Dixie. Didion’s ambivalence to Southern culture is somewhat obvious, and when she hears leaders of the community discussing the growth and opportunity that are coming to the South as a result of the changes in culture, one cannot help but detect skepticism about it. One also wonders if the reason her article never materialized is because the experience did not yield a confirmation of her notions as to what she and her potential audience might have expected. Things really were changing in the South, and believe it or not, they were changing for the better. Slowly, yes, but a gradual change is better than none at all.The second collection, “California Notes,” is brief—too brief, in fact, to be captivating. Once again, she does a good job at describing her surroundings, but there’s simply not enough substance to the section to gain any insight; it simply reads like what it is: a collection of notes and idea sketches. Disappointing? Not really; read once, it’s as interesting as viewing a roadside museum, interesting, but it doesn’t really warrant a return visit.South And West: From A Notebook feels very much like what it probably is: a posthumous work compiled and completed by its author and released before her demise. Joan Didion is my favorite author. Every one of her books is in my library. It's the way she puts words together, carefully and thoughtfully without pretense. She hits the nail on the head. Her last two books spoke of her husband's death and the death of her daughter. So I'm delighted to see her come out with a book that speaks from long ago (1970s) about life in the deep South and in California. She has moved on despite this story's having taken place long ago. The photo on the back cover also speaks to moving on--a young Joan is holding a young Quintana on her lap, playing with the child's hair. If she does not write again, we are left with a feeling she has completed the circle and is at peace. Best wishes from an appreciative reader in Juneau, Alaska.

I'm a Joan Didion fan from long ago. Reading this on my ipad was a bit different but the book itself was just as different. An interesting read. Totally Didion.

Absolutely brilliant. Didion's work makes you feel like you are present for the experience. I can't say that this is my favorite of her work, but I truly loved it. Her description of the South (though not completely unflattering) made me stop and think about how completely different my life would be had I been raised there.

Though I have a great visual memory, I have other memory issues and so it takes me longer than average to learn new steps on the computer. If I can do this, anyone can.Once you purchase the book, you register it at the PeaachPit website, then download image files- one folder for each chapter. They show you an "end" photo for each project, so you know what you are making. They also provide the start image(s) you will be manipulating in a given chapter.Once you register your book, you can access a copy online as well. It's the same text, but with videos added, showing how to do each step. I usually read each chapter in the paper copy first, then access the online book so I have it on the screen next to my photoshop window.I will likely go through the book again after I'm all finished just to solidify everything. I have valued everything I have learned thus far.

You could pay a learning center thousands of dollars to learn Photoshop and not learn as much as you will from this book. It is great.

I gave this book 3 stars because there are some parts that are already outdated which can cause any beginner to get lost or wonder why certain things don't work as shown in the book. This can create a lot of frustration especially if you're trying to learn PS as a beginner. At times the book is veg and assumes that you will know what they are talking about when you are given instructions to do something. I think it's an okay book for what you learn, but overall, this could have been done much better. This book does provide step-by-step instructions that teach you how to use the different tools in photoshop. It is clear and concise in some areas and in others, you will find yourself completely lost. It does provide a lot of information for beginners.

This book is typical of the ‘Classroom in a Book’ series. It is chock full of informationpertinent to the subject. It starts at a simple point that any student can grasp. Itprogresses slowly to a point that covers most of the program being described. It is wellillustrated, and the illustrations are very readable. It is easily comprehended by mostreaders. It will provide most readers with a comprehensive knowledge of the subjectprogram.Let’s look at some of the physical attributes of the book. It is a soft covered tomemeasuring 9 inches high by about 7.5 inches wide. It is comfortable to read. It has 391pages. It’s suggested price is $59.99. As of this writing it could be purchased onAmazon for $48.90. It is also available in a Kindle version for $35.61.The book starts of simply by having a short section on installing Adobe Photoshop andAdobe Bridge. This section also contains some instruction on starting Photoshop. Alsodiscussed are the lesson files provided. Adobe Press gives the reader instructions ondownloading these files onto your computer. They are used in each chapter to workthrough the projects presented in each chapter. Additionally, a Web Edition of the bookcan be downloaded as well. There are Review Questions at the end of each Chapter.The answers are also provided to check the student’s comprehension of the chaptermaterial. Also, some chapters come with an ‘Extra Credit’ exercise which provides thestudent with an additional brief project designed to enhance the understanding of aportion of that chapter’s material.At the beginning of each lesson an approximation of the time required to complete thechapter is provided. This enables the student to judge whether or not to proceed to thischapter. In my judgement, it would be better to allow sufficient time to complete achapter at one sitting since most of them include a project for the student to complete.Doing it all in the one sitting keep the comprehension thread intact for that chapter.Also, some chapters include information from real world Photoshop experts relative tothe subject matters in that chapter. These inserts bring home to the student that thereare people out there that use this product every day and are willing to share some oftheir experience.The reader should keep in mind that this book is a primer on the subject of Photoshop.It is a fairly comprehensive primer, but it should not be taken as “this book contains all Ineed to know about Photoshop”. If all of Photoshop’s features and abilities were placedin one book, there are few of us that would be able to lift it. This book will provide thereader new to Photoshop a good, comprehensive start on the subject. It is simplywritten with few, if any, sidetracking. It is not a book that the reader should buy with thethought that it can be breezed through quickly. Because of the subject matter, it shouldbe read at a pace designed to enable thorough comprehension of the subject matter.Taken at a reasonable pace and with participation in all the projects and after chaptermaterial, it will provide the reader with a good start in Photoshop.

The book spends more time on telling you how to do the projects the difficult way instead of telling you the short cuts and more logical way to use Photoshop. Many instances of material not matching the Adobe Photoshop Program. If you want to learn to use Photoshop get a better book, use YouTube and Google.

For the record, I've never used Photoshop in the past. However this book has been really great at showing me the basics steps by step. I've been taking an online course in a local college and this books has been a great teacher.The only drawback backs i found were - The images in the book are really small and In October Photoshop CC got an update which changed some of the functionality. Either way, great book.

I'm an intermediate PS user and this book really helped me with a lot of stuff I wasn't clear on. I love the exercises and the images you can download and work on with each exercise. I also use the index a lot when I need help with a specific item. Definitely recommend!!

Its actually pretty in depth and easy to follow along with the lessons.
