Review
“The Best Superhero Story of the Summer. Mister Miracle might be one of the rawest superhero comics I've read in recent memory.” —GQ “One of the most mind-bending superhero comics currently on stands.” —Entertainment Weekly “For those wishing that an 'adult superhero comic' meant more than just swearing and violence, Mister Miracle might just be the series you’ve been waiting for all along.” —Hollywood Reporter"Heartbreaking, funny, and human, it's an all-time classic in the making." —Wired"This is a most fitting tribute to Kirby by way of King: a tale of epic cataclysm both delicately devastating and quietly joyful." —Booklist (Starred Review)“Masterful.... Fans of Mister Miracle and new readers will be equally enthralled.” —Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)"A solid stand-alone that should have broad teen and adult appeal for those seeking more unusual cape-and-tights fare." —Kirkus Reviews "Every year, one book stands up above everyone else's. Fans and creators alike stop and stare in amazement at a couple of creators finding a new voice, new point of view, and new levels of artistic expression. This year it is Mister Miracle." —Brian Michael Bendis, author of Superman“This is a tender, subtle story that should resonate with anyone who’s ever been through a tough time. It’s also the best superhero graphic novel I have read in years.”—Toronto Star"There are master magicians performing here. Their names are Tom King and Mitch Gerads." —Brad Meltzer, author of Identity Crisis “Mister Miracle spirals out of control in his dazzling new comic.” —A.V. Club “Mister Miracle is every bit as good as one would expect from a creative team of this caliber working with such a venerated character. Tom King and Mitch Gerads manage to blend the larger-than-life nature of the Fourth World with a very grounded and emotionally charged story of a hero at his lowest ebb. Regardless of your familiarity with the New Gods, this is a series that absolutely deserves to be on your pull list.” —IGN “The new series Mister Miracle from writer Tom King and artist Mitch Gerads will take readers on an episodic roller coaster of death, resurrection, mystery and intrigue.” —CBR “One of the best comics you read this year.” —i09 “A never-ending loop of the bizarre, anxious and absurd…King and Gerads excel at creating incredibly likable characters who attempt to untangle doomed causes—a legacy perfect for this new book.” —Paste Magazine “Tom King wrote Mister Miracle for modern America.” —Nerdist

I was really looking forward to this book from the moment that the first issue was announced. The art looked amazing and I was just coming off of Tom King's (excellent) 'Vision", "Sheriff of Babylon" and 'Omega Men."I literally waited for over a year for this trade with baited breath. What a disappointment…This book was a depressing, pointless, slog. I had to force myself to finish. If it wasn't for Mitch Gerard's amazing art, I'm confident that I would have set it on the shelf never to return. From the cutesy, achingly self aware, faux hipster, insincere and phony dialogue to the writer's insistence on maintaining a near constant aura of low grade depression, to his need to emasculate the hero at every turn, never mind the fact that nothing the characters did actually mattered … what a bummer. We are well past the era of thinking of the deconstruction of the super hero as something new. It’s been going on 35 years or more. Alan Moore, Alex Ross ‘Astro Cityâ€, Neil Gaimen, etc, etc, etc, … Simply stripping a character of everything and anything that makes him heroic and placing lame, supposedly ‘slice of life†dialogue in his mouth isn’t enough. There needs to be some sort of fresh take on the well worn trope for it to be relevant. Btw, none of the aforementioned writers were / are boring. They were able to bring a reality to the world of heroes while still presenting the reader with interesting and exciting stories THAT MATTERED.Tom King has been on this trajectory for awhile both with his (sometimes excellent, sometime passable and often embarrassing) work on Batman as well as his other projects but now it seems that he’s taken being a “critic’s darling†to heart and really doubled down on his worst instincts with this book. The entire “story†just seems self conscious and self impressed. I apologize for writing such a negative review (its my first) but I feel strongly that the content and execution of this collection is sub par and somehow weirdly agenda driven. I have to admit that I feel ripped off.
When I finished reading Mister Miracle, I wanted to read through it again to see what I could comprehend in a different light. What did I misunderstand as I read this book?Tom King and Mitch Gerads created a work that somehow pulls a taut line of juxtaposition between the mundane and deeply psychological. This is contrast shows more and more as the story progresses, though I would not say all becomes clear. But isn’t that life? Why do I do what I do, what made me into what I am, and how did I get here? All in the shadows while Scott Free and Big Barda are trying to live in the order of their lives, Darkseid is. Order and chaos are always at war.Mister Miracle is an interesting story that I’m making no claim to fully grasp all the nuances of one time through. Further readings will be necessary to catch the ideas that slipped through on the first pass. Honestly, I can’t say many comics get that kind of mileage and thought provocation.Mitch Gerads is quickly establishing himself as one of my favorite illustrators in comics. The choices he makes with his panels, coloring, and effects instantly draw me in. Once he has my attention, he proves his substance with body language, facial expression, and subtle emotion. Gerads is a top tier artist. With the dynamic art and bright cover, Mister Miracle will be eye-catching and I believe draw a large crowd. I say this as a caution more than a critique of design choice, but this graphic novel is for mature readers. It says as much above the barcode, but that could be lost in the flash of appeal. The mature content within contains suicide, physical and physcological abuse, extreme violence, sex, war, profanity, and blasphemy. Not for kids.People are talking about Mister Miracle for good reason. It’s not shallow. It’s full of mystery. It’s beautiful. It’s ugly. It’s fantasy but it’s also real. The more I think about it, the more it grows on me. There is a lot to mine from this work.
