I’m not a reader, but I couldn’t put this down and not in the cliche way. Each chapter left me wanting to know the next. I’ve since purchased several copies to give away to family and friends, and even strangers. Coach Mike’s approach to trials and tribulations and the idea of a best self, seems to be a solution for many situations we go through that otherwise lacked something that could be consistent and universal, but at the same time, individualized and specific to the person. I highly recommend this book. It’s also something that you refer back to and reread throughout your life and as there are changes or new challenges so you can keep it and it won’t sit on a shelf forever. It was new territory for me to truly dive into self-reflection, but definitely needed and probably necessary for you too.“There is a pervasive belief in society that people can’t change, not really. That is absolutely 100% untrue. If people couldn’t change, I’d still be penniless and addicted to drugs. If people couldn’t change, everyone would basically be doomed. I’ve seen people overcome all odds. People change. They did. You can.”If this doesn’t resonate with you, read it over and over again until it does. You won’t be disappointed.

With all due respect, this is a decent book but says nothing that hasn't been written about in thousands of other books. You have heard it all before and lets face it, the fact that Dr. Phil is promoting/endorsing it is the reason for the book's success. Spheres of your life, arenas of your life, whatever..same old headings. Again, information and tips are useful but no original thoughts, no "theoretical thinking." What I do not like is the implicit message that you are not good enough as you already are--that you can be better. In other words, I will say to the author--you can be better, you can get a real degree rather than bogus life coach certification which is no substitute for a legitimate graduate degree in psychology.

I purchased based upon the positive reviews, which I'm now seriously questioning. I did not find anything in this book that hasn't been said in other, much better written books. The book was average in writing style, long in stories (which I'm not interested in), and very generic in tips. The tips and homework were all common sense ideas that most already do and know about.I really wanted to like the book and I really was looking for some nuggets, but I found very few. It wasn't horrible (hence not giving it 1 star), but is very generic and average. If you are looking for something deep or something that will be useful to self change or self improvement then I believe you need to look elsewhere. I'm sure in person his coaching probably works, but his methods just simply don't translate into anything useful when reduced to writing without the in-person coaching.

"Best Self" is a must read for anyone looking for make any type of lasting change in his/her life. I found it to be extremely helpful. It felt like Coach Mike was taking me on a personal journey of self discovery; his personal and professional anecdotes were inspiring and helped me feel connected. With the guidance of "Best Self", I was able to gain personal insight and make the much needed adjustments in my life.

I received this book to review before it is released.I found this book to be very helpful. There are a lot of different action items that one can take. I chose to do some of them to get an idea of what the book is like, but want to keep the book so I can continue doing some of the other action items as I have time or as I need them.The few I did really changed my perspective. I like the idea of the Best Self and the Anti-Self. It's not that we are bad people, we just have a part of us that isn't quite so helpful.I also like the little snippets in Coach Mike's life and his client's lives. Real world examples always help me to understand things better.I would highly recommend this book for anyone. Even if you aren't into self-help books, toward the end there is a great chapter on setting goals. That is helpful alone.

I pre-ordered this book, received it Tuesday (thank you Amazon!) and finished it today. In his direct and clear style, Coach Mike provides a roadmap to understanding what makes us tick (both the good and the not-so-good), inspires us to live the “good” and teaches how and when push the “not-so-good” away, and allows us to coach ourselves to a better place. Having a really good life coach in my life on a continuing basis is something I may never be able to afford, but I really feel that Coach Mike is personally with me as I work through the exercises in his book. It makes me accountable and that’s something I really need.This book is not an ordinary “self book”, it is more of a self help bible to a happier life. I know these things take work, but I feel that I now have the tools to develop better relationships and more fulfillment in my life as long as I stay with the program. Thank you Coach Mike!

I have always been a fan of personal growth and this book really BRINGS IT! It does not just help you identify issues, but gives you tools to actually work through them so you can really address items and programs and change them. It allowed me to really take an honest look at myself, and net feel bad about it.... but feel hopeful and positive about making changes.

Too often I start a book and get sidetracked along the way not ever completing it. That was not the case with Coach Mike's book. I feel like I am going to be reading this a second time in the near future. He lays out a framework that is easy to understand while also being extremely thought-provoking. I am excited about my authentic future now!

I have been listening to Melanie and Gin's podcast since I started Intermittent Fasting in October. I have been waiting for the book to be released because I also follow a Paleo lifestyle. Having read 6 other IF books, I wasn't expecting to learn much from What, When, Wine, but I have happily discovered that I still have much to learn! Melanie does a great job of breaking down the science of IF and incorporating the science of Paleo style eating. The recipes are wonderful, and I can't wait to try some more of them. The only problem is that with only one meal a day, it will take me a long time to try them all. What, When, Wine is written to be read from cover to cover AND is organized as a reference book. I plan to buy a sharing copy because I won't be letting this one out of my sight. Just an FYI, if you are new to IF or an IF veteran, this book fits the bill for both. Everything you need to know all between two covers. I love, love, love it!

So excited! This author was one of the first I read when learning about Intermittent Fasting. I love her style of writing and can relate to her on so many levels.Her first book “The What When Wine Diet” was about what to eat, when to eat it and added wine!!!! So you can see why I was so interested. I listened to it on audible and even though I was interested in IF, I wasn’t ready to commit.This summer, I did a weight loss challenge with my friends and some of us started counting macros. In the midst of our frustration that the weight was slow to come off I mentioned the WWW diet.This started my 2nd round in my interest of Intermittent Fasting. Could it be the miracle of fat loss?? I found Melanie on her podcast with Gin Stephens and binged listened to all of them. Then I YouTubed every video to get even more info!The first version of this book is what got me started and now I’m devouring every page of the new version on WHAT WHEN WINE! Ready to pick Melanie’s brain! I’mAmazed at her knowledge and love her personality!!So happy she updated her book. Her podcast and book have been a huge part of my journey!

Melanie’s book is a game changer for anyone looking to improve their health and well-being. I have read so many books by all of the paleo and keto gurus and this one is by far my favourite. While reading her book, I felt like I was listening to a friend. She has a very personable, very funny and relatable writing style. She says in her intro to avoid being tempted to read just bits and pieces of it, as there is a ton of amazing info on every page. I was tempted to skim through it, as I am a veteran intermittent faster and eat keto and thought I already knew #allthethings. But I read every word and she was right, her book is full of info that will help anyone make the best choices. Melanie isn’t preachy or dogmatic. She lays out info and respects that we all do what we feel is best for our bodies. I have had digestive issues since 2013 that started when I was eating a vegan diet and training for a marathon. I entered into a hormonal nightmare, which I’ve spent the last 5 years healing from. Intermittent fasting and a paleo lifestyle is the most healthy and free I have felt in a long time. And she has a section on wine! Need I say more? Her book is so thoroughly researched, she jokes about a tome-size reference section. She brings the science of fasting and paleo to a level that isn’t condescending nor is it over your head. Her section on dealing with the social aspects of paleo IF is a must read for everyone. She also offers many different IF options with the pros and cons to help you choose what may work best for you. Melanie’s book is #allthethings and I encourage anyone interested in health, longevity, anti-aging and healthy body composition to read it ASAP over a glass of wine (it it’s that time).

Really loved reading this book! It took me 2 days to read it. Melanie writes so well and so thoughtfully that I felt like I was talking with a close friend through the entire book. I haven't adopted the Paleo lifestyle (yet!) but I have with Intermittent Fasting the past 5 months and this was a great read about it. I learned so many new things that I hadn't before. I am excited to try all of her delicious recipes in the back of the book and maybe incorporate a more Paleo way of eating into my life with her encouragement and research. Way to go Melanie! I really enjoyed your book and looking forward to more books from you in the future.

I had been hearing about Intermittent Fasting for years but like many, was hesitant to listen any further. As a food lover and a yo-yo dieter, I couldn't absorb one more cockamamie diet telling me what I can and can't eat and how I have to deprive myself of all the things I love. I'm already a relatively healthy eater (organic and whole foods) so I adopted this way of life very easily. This book teaches you how to fast and the healthiest food to eat to optimize weight loss and health. The best part, I still eat the foods I love I just skip breakfast and eat between 12 pm and 5pm. It's so flexible so you can move your window around too. There are countless testimonials and support groups where people share their success stories. Weight loss is truly a side effect to this way of life and many have lost over 100lbs! However the thing that truly moves me is how so many have reversed chronic and debilitating diseases like hypertension and diabetes type 2. I am hooked and absolutely love this book. Read it! It will change how you think about food and eating and could be the way for you to find health and happiness! What do you have to lose??

Overall I enjoyed the book and found her life fascinating. There is some advanced technical science in it, but it's about a scientist's life, so I expected that. Some of it went over my head, I just scanned it and kept reading. It didn't disrupt the flow of the story. I'm passing this book to my niece, Kia. She is wicked smart and will understand the whole book.I felt Catherine Brady did an excellent job of portraying Elizabeth Blackburn as a whole person and describing how she overcame so many challenges in life. I would recommend this book to other people.

I thought that this was one of the most interesting biographies I've read. Not only does it explain in detail the remarkable scientific progress and discoveries made by Dr. Blackburn, but also her personal and professional evolution. Dr. Blackburn had a free ranging childhood in Tazmania - with unfettered freedom to explore nature and experiment - rare for little girls any where in the world, and particularly fascinating on an island with unique species, topography, and nature. Many of her teachers and mentors recognized her talent and encouraged her, as did her father who was a doctor though he was plagued by alcoholism. She managed to study science even when science was not offered in school. She persevered our of sheer curiosity and passion no matter what the obstacles were - and always some unusual teacher or helpful scholarship committee spotted her as gifted and managed to find a way for her to bloom.Most books about women scientists treat them as walking dogs - but this one avoids political postering about feminism and explains Blackburn development as a result of her passion for lab work and finding answers. As an undergraduate, she sees herself as a Lab Rat not an exceptional student. Admirably, there is no emphasis on her challenges as a female until she finishes her undergraduate degree in England and goes to Yale University, where she first encounters blatent gender discrimination. Even then, she takes great pains never to complain about being treated differently from male researches, wary of being labeled a trouble-maker - and simply seeks venues where she can do her work. First and foremost, she is an avid scientist, never a wronged woman (despite the fact that she knew she was being discriminated against in pay, grants, and lab space - especially at UC Berkeley).Realizing that she could not longer get the funds of support for further research at UC Berkeley she accepted a generous offer at the newly emerging biogenetic research campus of the University of California at San Francisco at Mission Bay. At last, she finally had the funds and lab space to complete her remarkable discoveries about telomers and telomerase - the secret to aging, fighting cancer - and understand how DNA eventually unravels in all species. In a unique cooperation with a psychologist, she documents how DNA break down in proportion to specific physical and emotional problems including aging, stress, lack of exercise, and other demonstrable factors. In particular, she documents how care givers of people with chronic illness, die younger than a control group without such responsibilies.The book also describes her generosity as a researcher in giving her grad students and assistants credit for their work in support of her research. When she received the Nobel prize for medicine in 2010, after the book had been written a few years before, she shared it with her former student.I'm an amateur science buff and read a lot of popular science. I found the biography superior to any other I've read about male or female scientists in explaining how Elizabeth Blackburn became a stellar scientist. I ordered the book after hearing Dr. Blackburn speak at Mission Bay. I was so impressed by her discoveries and charmed by her warmth that I wanted to learn more about her - before she received the Nobel. I told friends with me at the presentation that I thought she should receive a Nobel - and two years later was thrilled when she did.Many people to whom I've given the book have been frustrated by the technical explanations of how DNA works. I'm an architect who studied some science as an undergraduate. I found the explanations clear and exciting. Readers who cannot understand the science in this book would do well to read Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle, and a good biography of James Watson, the discoverer of DNA. It is sad that the level of scientific knowledge, even among otherwise very well educated Americans, is appallingly limited.

what an amazing woman

I found this one of those books that one could do without. Not informative, not captivating, just boring. I would not suggest it to anyone

This book was a disappointment. The subject should be interesting, but the presentation was poor. The author explains almost none of the science. She gives entire sentences of technical terms without definition or simplification. Perhaps this is because she is a professor of creative writing, not a scientist or science writer. Or perhaps her main interests are Blackburn's struggles with male chauvinism and right wing politics. Anyway, the result is a scientific biography in which the science is almost incomprehensible.
