About the Author

Eve Babitz is the author of several books of fiction, including Sex and Rage: Advice to Young Ladies Eager for a Good Time, L.A. Woman, and Black Swans: Stories. Her nonfiction works include Fiorucci, the Book and Two by Two: Tango, Two-Step, and the L.A. Night. She has written for publications including Ms. and Esquire and in the late 1960s designed album covers for the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and Linda Ronstadt. Her novel Eve’s Hollywood is published by NYRB Classics. Matthew Specktor is the author of the novels American Dream Machine and That Summertime Sound, as well as a nonfiction book of film criticism. Flashy, very L.A. in the 70s from a woman who grew up there and went to HS in Hollywood. Funny, sassy, in the end sad because so many women seem to feel their lives are over past 40 and the freshness of high-heeled youth. Funny satire of Emerald Beach Laguna, WASP rich haven from the nonwhite, nonProt, nonPreppy. I enjoyed it, as someone who spent teenage years of the 50s in Pasadena, CA and went on HS weekends to Balboa and Newport Beach, drove over hills and ranches to Laguna -- where Riverside now is! Unrecognizable.

What a fun read. Now I'll be devouring everything Lady Eve Babitz has written, although she'd give me a slap on the wrist for calling her lady, but very pleased to know her work is being re-published. What a wild ride. Also her aside about pasta had me in stitches for longer than I'd like to admit. I often found myself thinking this was the type of book smart, funny, independent women would publish today; it came out in 77'! The book feels remarkably fresh and still oh-so-relevant.

Told as a series of romantic encounters that waiver between the silly and the profound, this novella is an excellent introduction to the life and work of Eve Babitz.

This book reads like Hemingway with a sense of humor. So much unforgettable imagery: “the Santa Anas were blowing so hard that searchlights were the only things in the sky that were straight.” I mean, Jesus Christ, that’s just gorgeous.

So that is LA. I thought better of it.The Place is present but the characters float about and then die.

This was a Christmas gift for my daughter.

I am slightly younger than the author and I, too, grew up in LA, so this was a blast from the past for me. Very much enjoyed it.

babitz is amazing. i prefer her short stories much more than her novels. but she is amazing. this by far is my favorite collection of hers.

Once you begin reading, you'll be sitting at the edge of your seat. The author does a super job keeping the tension tight and the story line going. I know some people will wonder about a few of the animal scenes, but I live in a wilderness area, and the tenacity and strength of the mountain lion (cougar) in the book is NOT exaggerated. Parents, I would caution that you might want to read the book before your younger teens or preteens do. There are scenes that might not be sexually or socially appropriate for your child, but the book is great.

It has to.Until it doesn’t. And Matt knows if they wait any longer they’ll be dead—just another bunch of victims in Mother Nature’s twisted games. Armed with only a handful of supplies and his fierce determination Matt decides to goes head-to-head with the elements, battling hypothermia, frostbite, and even mountain lions in order to find help and save them all. That is if Mother Nature doesn’t kill him first.Avalanche is a quick and easy read. Once the nominal event occurs, the action is constant. There is no end to the deadly situations these kids can get themselves into. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but in the same way I enjoy an action movie; if it’s exciting, I’m on board. Some suspension of logic is required, especially after the second time Matt nearly gets himself killed by behaving recklessly. By the point that he should have been dead for a third time, I was beginning to wonder why Leah didn’t just do him in herself. Then Leah, levelheaded, mountain savvy Leah, does something that even a newbie like myself knows you’re not supposed to do, and nearly gets them both killed. The author could have easily written the scene without throwing one of her few sensible characters under the bus, but chose not to. That’s just bad parenting.Honestly, this isn’t a bad book. The reader can tell that Ms. Braun did some good research, and that is nothing to ignore; it’s the one feature that takes this from being a mediocre book to being a pretty good read. I would recommend Avalanche to readers 12 and older who enjoy action and adventure.

Stung by yet another snub by his professor father, this time because Dad’s 28 year old girlfriend is having pregnancy issues, Matt is eager to go from Des Moines to Colorado on a school break. Smart and having an eclectic mind, He’s not wise in the ways of survival or girls, two areas where skills will soon have plenty of value. He and his best friend Toby have been invited by Toby’s older brother Sid to join a group of college age kids on a backcountry skiing adventure. It’s an interesting group. In addition to Matt, Toby and Sid, there’s Dylan, wealthy and somewhat reckless, his girlfriend Julie, and Sid’s sibling roommates, Carter and Leah. Matt and Toby aren’t novices, but skiing at 11,000 feet, while going uphill as much as down tests them right from the start. When an avalanche hits, burying Dylan and seriously injuring Sid, everyone’s strength and mental stability are tested. The party must decide who goers for help (there’s no cellphone service at the abandoned cabin where they seek shelter) and who stays with Sid. How that’s decided and what happens to each group make for a fast and tension-filled read. You might criticize some of the decisions made at times, but unless you’ve been in an unpredictable and life-threatening crisis yourself, it’s easy to play armchair quarterback. I really enjoyed the book and think teen adventure junkies will as well. Yes, there’s strong language and drinking, but both are typical of college age characters.

Entertaining story. Some of the events were pretty far-fetched, but held my interest. Most importantly, all the characters were likeable and "real". I would not call this a "teen" book, but definitely "young adult". That being said I'm 61 years old and enjoyed the story.Warning: Sexual references, drinking, drugs and violent paragraphs.

This was a great read. I was angry at the way some of the events turned, but that's why it was so good - not predictable! Nice length, very fast paced.

Instead, you open it up to find this is merely a journal to note something you're thankful for each day. SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT! I was so excited to receive this from my husband only to have to ask to return it. Please update the title of this book, completely misleading and I bet I'm not the first to think so!!!!!

Wonderful book that clearly and succinctly walks you through the process of pattern-welded blademaking. Of course, you still have to put in the work, but this makes it a little easier to understand the whys and the process.

The author does a very good job of explaining the process of forge welding metals to create Damascus steel. He also includes information about bringing out greater contrast in the works. It's hard to stop adding more to this...

Wish I could vote no stars. Book opened to page 98...upside down. Remainder of the book was the same and numbered incorrectly. Returning it and hoping the replacement is done correctly.

Great book about general damascus techniques, but not so much for actual patterns. I wish there were more illustrations of billet stacking and the resultant patterns.

Gives a lot of great patterns, techniques and I recommend it to any artist Blacksmith bent on producing quality knives.

Good variety of pictures of knives and articles.

Even though the contents seem to deliver the message by this master bladesmith, the edition of the book, it's designs and images in black & white that lack contrast, left me insatisfied. Maybe a next edition could manage to overcome this. Great book!

Update: After working through several other macrame books, I am upgrading this from 2 to 3 stars. Although all of the criticisms below still apply, this book is superior to others in terms of the clarity of its instructions and knot guidance. I also bought the other popular macrame book out right now (with the black macarame piece on the cover) and found its instructions to be just awful. I think the key to this book is to ignore instructions related to dowel width and replace materials listed with similar items. I still wish they had more realistic projects in the book, but at least it is easy to make the useful ones they do have.I am an absolute beginner who has never tied a single macrame knot, so I was looking for a book that would be a good introduction to the craft. Unfortunately, I find this book almost useless. It requires materials that are difficult to get or need to be cut (for example, a 36.5" dowel rod - not exactly a typical size). The weird thing is that even the website listed in the book doesn't have the necessary materials for many of these projects (though you can buy things the authors have made, so maybe it's just a promotional link). There is a single unlabeled page where the materials are shown - otherwise there is little to no guidance as to what each thing actually is. And finally, I find many of the projects silly; it is really unlikely that I'm going to make myself an indoor swing or a macrame deck chair (which requires me to find a deck chair frame of 35 3/4 x 38 1/8 x 26 3/8 or somehow adjust the macrame panel to fit, not exactly a beginner's task).I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 star because there are a few projects that will be worth trying, once I somehow find the proper dowel size and wooden-looking cane rings (seriously, google "cane ring macrame" and try to find the sizes described in the book - there are so few places that sell them at all that the link to this book is the third result in the search (and yes, you can search the more general "macrame ring" and find something similar, but this book specifically calls them cane rings, a term that doesn't appear to be used widely)). I have a ton of craft books and the best ones all have easy to find materials, clear instructions, and useful projects - this book falls far short in every category. I would not buy this again.

It is very inspiring with beautiful photos on how to make various Macrame projects with in depth tutorials.I used Macrame cords from brand called Crafteza that I also purchased from Amazon For making the Macrame projects described in the book and have received a lot of compliments from everyone! I highly recommend this book for aspiring Macrame artists, worth every penny.

I did quite an extensive reasearch on American accent training and for the money it's the best method out there.I did borrow a copy at the local library to review it, but I bought my own copy to practice. Keep in mind that improving your accent requires a lot of practice, it's not a magic wand, it's just a method to get better every day and speak more clearly to be understood.

In Malaysia, people do speak English but mix it with different dialects which confuses the language. After using this book, it dramatically increased my fluency in English.

My friend is very satrisfied with this purchase. I wanted to give her a book that helps with phonemic analysis of english. This is NOT the same as phonics; phonemic analysis helps the learner hear the differences between the sounds of the English language (in this case); there are numerous diagrams that also assist the learner in making the sounds correctly, which is precisely what she wanted. I am impressed by her progress in a short period of time, and her increase in self-esteem that accompanies improved pronunciation of English.Many excellent resources accompany this package, including a phone contact for assistance. Well worth the money.

This is outstanding! I have used it for about 4 weeks now, and I can already see that people understand me better. I feel much more confident now when speaking on phone conference calls (I used to refrain from speaking on conference calls fearing that people will not understand my accent). I received the 3rd edition; the CDs are wrapped in plastic, and there are NO scratches. I wish I knew about this training years earlier.

Wish I had had this book when I first began teaching English as a Second Language to Koreans! The lessons are written clearly with helpful advice as to where to place the sound in the mouth or throat. There is a section that lists the problems of many particular nationalities as they struggle to learn English. This book assumes the student knows basic English grammar, but that is okay because books teaching grammar are plentiful. This book has been a tremendous help to me and to my students.

If you did not grow up in US or have any formal course of English speaking training, you'd find this book and CDs really helpful. No matter how long you've been here, you'd find a few interesting things in this course. Besides a few places where the record is essentially inaudible, all 5 CDs are excellent.

I initially purchased this volume to use as a pocket dictionary, but it was obvious once it arrived that it would not fit in any pocket I possess in my apparel collection, yet this is not a strike against it! I find myself consulting this useful tome more than regular sized dictionaries or my computer which has a handy dictionary/thesaurus feature. So comprehensive are the definitions in this pocket dictionary that I have hardly ever had to consult this little guy's big brother, the full sized Oxford dictionary, now gathering dust on my bookshelf.I highly recommend this volume for anyone from high school to graduate school. The dictionary and thesaurus are well thought out and very accessible. The paperback binding is also quite durable and I do not anticipate any problems such as pages falling out or the spine breaking. My copy is over a year old, consulted almost daily, and it is still happy to oblige with a definition!

Not a pocket dictionary at all!

This is not a review of the book I received, it is a review of the service.I ordered the full paperback edition of the Oxford Dictionary & Thesaurus for my desk top, and a pocket edition for use while travelling. The former arrived and it's fine. The latter's arrival made me spit with annoyance for three reasons: (1) it was the American English edition which I did not order; (2) the bloody thing is almost the same size as the full edition and surely defeats any pocket a clothing manufacturer would usefully create; and (3), I live in Timor-Leste which has an unusable postal service so I was relying on getting the items brought to me by a friend visiting his home in Hawaii. Having lugged this thing all the way out to me, I couldn't very well hit him with it but it was a close call... It's not a huge amount of money lost (there is no way I can post the damn thing back), but it is very annoying to not have what I needed, when I needed it; namely, a wee version of the OED&T that I could pop into my handbag or, indeed, the modest back pocket of my jeans.

Good dictionary

American, not British English! Too large to fit in my pocket, this is a superior inexpensive reference book. The dictionary is excellent for a book of this size. The thesaurus is clearly more limited than a dedicated tome, but the list of synonyms is useful. The guide to pronounciation is as good as any, though I feel this is one area where CD-ROM computerized dictionaries have the advantage. There is also a brief "Special Reference Section" containing signs and symbols, easily confused words (e.g affect/effect), terms for groups of animals, et al., but includes other items I found less appropriate to a dictionary such as metric/US weights, measures, and temperatures, multiplication tables - redundant in the age of calculators, presidents/states of the US, etc.

I bought this dictionary/thesaurus a few years ago for college, and have used it well. While it won't fit in your pocket, it will fit in your book bag, and I was more than happy to sacrifice the extra weight for a few more definitions and synonyms. And, while this is much more detailed dictionary than any other "pocket" dictionary I have come across (which typically fit in your pocket), it is certainly not THE definitive dictionary you'll want to own. I have come across a few words in my studies that have not been listed in this dictionary, and that I had to find at home (in a behemoth edition that fits on a CD-ROM). All in all, a great buy--best portable dictionary you will find. (Weight: 970 grams; 2 lbs, 2 1/2 oz. For those of you planning on taking it hiking.)

I would like to say that this book is excellent for students with hard courses in high school. It's a pretty good size to fit in your backpack although I wouldn't call it pocket size, I would call it backpack size :). They also have a special reference section where they give you basic information such as country/capital, states, metric conversion, etc... All in all a very excellent purchase that would benifit your education.

What a well-researched and nicely-written book. I've been collecting baseball cards since the 1970s, and I learned a lot reading this page-turner. I'd recommend it for anyone who's interested in the hobby. Interestingly, the author comes to the same conclusion I reached about the baseball card industry over a decade ago: It needs to go back to the way it was, with fewer sets, fewer "insert" cards and cheaper prices. And bring back the bubble gum and cardboard.

Wow - if you want to be schooled in the history of baseball/trading cards from their inception: tobacco cards, Cracker Jack cards, bubble gum cards, etc., this book will have you mesmerized! The history of cards is well described in chronological order so its provides a smooth transition from one generation to the next from vintage cards through the "Junk Wax" era to the modern day! We highly recommend you read "Mint Condition" if you enjoy the hobby and/or collect baseball cards in general. This book will not disappoint you!

This is a wonderful book on many different levels. I was surprised to learn that baseball cards have been in existence since the 1860s. The book explores, in a very entertaining way, the marketing of cigarettes and gum by packaging them with collectible cards; images of baseball players being by far the most popular. The author also tells fascinating stories of the men who significantly contributed to the hobby: the entrepreneurs, the collectors, the creative teams and in later years the speculators. The story of how one company became a long running monopoly in the industry and how that monopoly was broken by the head of the baseball player's union was engrossing. The chapter on a contemporary baseball card dealer who warns buyers about doctored cards, can be read in a new light, since he recently admitted to trimming the sides of the world's most famous and valuable baseball card.

This book sat on my wish list for months. I delayed purchasing it because while I loved collecting baseball cards as a kid I figured there was no way an entire book about baseball cards could be enjoyable.I was dead wrong.While the idea of baseball card history sounds rather dull, Jameison makes it humorous, entertaining, and insightful. He does so by displaying the historical import of certain card sets (arguing, for example, that cigarettes owe their American success to baseball cards), interviewing those who played key roles in the creative and business growth of baseball cards, and giving us an up-close look at the most eccentric collectors and dealers.He writes as one who, like me, loved the hobby of collecting and trading cards as a child in the 80's -- only to eventually give up on the hobby when baseball cards became so expensive and overproduced that chidlren could no longer participate in the same way. As such, I felt as if he was investigating on my behalf and speaking on my behafl throughout.That said, if you enjoy quirky American history, business case studies, or interesting characters you should find the book a quick and fun read. Even if you were not a card-collecting child in the 80's.[...]

I, like the author, jumped into the card-collecting craze in the 80s and 90s (the junk wax era of cards). And I was hoping that my card collection would become valuable for me in the future. However, years later, I was shocked when it was revealed to me that my collection was virtually worthless. And this book finally explained to me just why this happened. This book was fun, easy to read, and very entertaining.

I'm about the same age as the author. I know exactly what it was like to spend every dime I had on baseball cards in 1989-1991. A subscription to Beckett was sacred. Every bus ride to school, and back home, we were making card deals as if we were traders on Wall Street. I could only dream of owning a 1984 Donruss Mattingly or a 1982 Topps Ripken. What a shock it was to see what happened to baseball card collecting when I came back to it in my late 20's. If you're like me, you will love this book.

For me the most interesting thing was, that Mr. Boris Korbel is mentioned there as an entrepreneur in Upper Deck company, his father Josef came from the Czech Republic, where he managed Salvation Army activities until the communist coup in 1948. Boris Korbel made billions of dollars in California and came back to the Czech Republic in 1992, where he bought the most prominent soccer team Slavia, which he generously funded. The whole world is a global village !

Best book I've read on the card collecting hobby and the history of sports cards by an author whose mother did not throw out his childhood cards. Well researched and informative. A must read for any card collector.
